POLICE TOLD TO HALT RISE OF PAEDOPHILE HUNTERS

"Police have been told to crack down on paedophile-hunting vigilantes after the number of groups in the nation targeting online child abusers rose to more than 75.

Internal guidance for detectives, obtained by The Times, tells them to investigate any potential offences by the hunters as well as those they accuse of trying to groom children.

This could include harassment, privacy offences or violence offences if there are clashes when the suspect is confronted. The guidance, handed out last year, also warns officers that vigilante groups have “little or no consideration” for the safeguarding requirements of victims of the paedophiles they have outed.

The advice suggests that the quality of information passed to police is “frequently low”, while vigilante groups have previously destroyed evidence about their confrontations.

The National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) says: “The techniques used by vigilantes will often be very different to those employed by the police and may involve the commission of offences by the vigilantes. In such circumstances, it is important that the police bring any potential offences committed by the vigilante to the attention of the charging lawyer.”

There is concern about rising levels of amateur paedophile-hunting, with more than 75 groups, with names such as Dark Justice and The Hunted One, operating in what a court was told this week had become a “cottage industry”.

This means that hundreds if not thousands of people are posing as children online to catch potential sexual predators. While their actions have led to scores of prosecutions they have raised concerns about vigilantism and the safety of both accuser and suspect. Undercover police who contact potential abusers must adhere to strict guidelines and their work is subjected to scrutiny that is lacking in inquiries by paedophile hunters.

The NPCC guidance tells officers that they must not work with any vigilante groups or endorse their activities.

The document says they should make clear that confrontation and exposing abusers online “could put people at risk”. It warns that the wrong people could be exposed “either by mistake or with other intent”, and that officers should preserve evidence quickly because vigilantes have been known to destroy it.

Chief Constable Simon Bailey, the NPCC lead for child protection, said that people should let the police investigate. “So-called paedophile hunters are taking risks they don’t understand and can undermine police investigations,” he said. “Most importantly, unlike our officers, they have no way of safeguarding child victims. The increase in these groups is symptomatic of the increasing scale of child sexual abuse that police are dealing with.” The methods of paedophile-hunters came under scrutiny last April when legal teams acting for two men allegedly snared by online activists claimed that prosecutions using evidence gathered in such a way “diminished the integrity of the court process”.

Mr Justice Langstaff, however, ruled at Newcastle crown court in favour of the paedophile hunters. The judgment meant that men caught by them could continue to be prosecuted.

Brian Hegarty, a criminal law specialist, said the ruling had “opened the floodgates”, letting “self-appointed crime-fighters” act in a way he believes is concerning. He said: “The way some [groups] behave causes concern because they are not subject to the same sorts of strict regulations and accountability as law enforcers and the danger of that is they can specifically target people.”

Vigilantes and violence

• David Baker, 43, killed himself in October four days after he was confronted by paedophile hunters and detained by Hampshire police. His family said vigilantes acted “too quickly and too fiercely without thinking of the repercussions”.

• Violence broke out on Easter Day at Bluewater shopping centre, near Dartford, when members of a group called The Hunted One surrounded a man they claimed was grooming a teenage girl. A video showed violent scenes after a member of the group confronted the man, saying: “You’re here to meet a child for sex, yeah?” Security guards broke up the fight and police arrived and arrested the abuse suspect, who was eventually jailed for a child sex offence. Two vigilantes pleaded guilty to affray.

• This week police warned hunters about identifying suspects online after two men were attacked by three masked loyalist paramilitaries at home in north Belfast. It was after an occupant was confronted on his doorstep by Predator Catchers NI. He had denied wrongdoing."

    Some people may accuse me of giving Shane Brannigan too much credit but I actually have a feeling in my bones that he knew what was coming, hence his rather timely exit from perfoming stings and a new-found direction (whatever that may turn out to be).

      All know,it wasnt hidden the police are coming to get hold of the bedlam and put some guidelines in place. Most are just blinkered to what that entails though and how it will effect them in a negative way even passing the basic tests yet they are still eagerly waiting for it to happen to their teams

      I think the government should look very closely at the bill going through the Irish Parliament right now, which has cross-party support and will almost certainly pass.

      The bill will legalise sting activity such as this, but crucially, only for law enforcement and with a warrant. It will be illegal for random members of the public to go online and deliberately pretend to be under 18. This means no legal decoying, which means no hunts and no stings because it will not be legally binding in a trillion years and the case will be instantly dismissed regardless of evidence. The groups will therefore end up out of business before you know it.

      This isn't a ban on the hunting activity, it's a ban on the methods they use which leaves them impotent. It is such a simple and obvious solution and why our government can't consider something similar is beyond me. I might ask my MP.

    Fripps is a lieing deceitful con artist. Anyone in any doubt about that needs to Google him "his real name of course" he uses several aliases. He's recently made alot of money from selling merchandise which alot of people have paid for but not even received. He's always got his begging cap out. He makes subtle hints to his followers about how much he has to spend on fuel etc and then the followers in the comments offer to donate money to him or phones etc he NEVER refuses there offers instead he private messages them with his address. I know this to be true for a fact. He's in this for fainacal gain and to have his big fat ego stroked nothing else.

      They are also playing with fire by getting involved in Northern Ireland. That is seriously dangerous behaviour and Belfast in particular is not something you mess with - even the PSNI are wary about entering some parts of the city, so a thuggish English vigilante swaggering about like they own the place could result in serious trouble.

    I suspect the government' strategy is to get the police enforcing existing powers a lot more rigorously and make life very difficult for these groups, so that they fade away on their own after losing interest. You can already see the police attitude hardening up nicely.

    Once the hunter groups realise the police are NOT on their side, once the live feeds are used to get cases thrown out of court (this has already happened), once decoys start being traced and get home raids to confiscate their equipment, once hunters are up in court for public order offences and assault... people will realise it's no longer worth it and this nonsense will wither and die.

    Then the government can bolt the door shut by bringing in Ireland-style legislation making it illegal for an adult to go online and deliberately pretend to be under 18.

      Dark Justice often do take things personal. While they are undoubtedly far more mature than some of the other groups, they are still presenting a 'false reality' to the public (and they monetise the subject of child abuse by taking donations and selling merchandise - effectively turning it into a money spinner).

      They, like many other groups, also put decoys on adult only dating sites. They are 'creating monsters' that would never have necessarily offended otherwise, had this temptation not been put in front of them.

      There is also very little evidence to suggest that there is currently, or has there ever been, a wide scale problem of children venturing onto adult only sites. Vigilantes often claim they do, but not a single group ever backed up their claims with any facts to date.

      The big question most vigilante want as answer to is 'why?'

      Most of these vigilantes are not only presenting a false reality (by making claim that all these men on adult only sites are 'paedophiles'), they are also not living in reality.

      The answer will always be varied. Some reasons can range from boredom, loneliness, depression, or just plain lustful thoughts. Concerning the latter, we have to remember that the male brain can easily become addicted to pornography (dopamine rush),and also that men are 'visual,' whereas women are far more turned on by fantasy (what they think, feel, read, hear).

      It is also a fact that adolescent females will be seen as in their prime (even subconsciously) in term of 'breeding potential.' A healthy mother is likely to produce healthy offspring. This is why it has always been, and will always be the case that men 'look at younger women.' When a man is stimulated, he is subconsciously following the human instinct to breed (I am strictly referring to heterosexuals - homosexuality is a far more complex issue that I do not feel I have enough knowledge to speak about).

      Although women are not as 'visual' as men, they still select 'breeding potential' subconsciously. For this reason, women will tend to choose men that are tall, strong, handsome and intelligent, because their subconscious mind sees their potential mate as a producer of health offspring.

      It is a fact that girls of adolescent ages are discovering their sexuality and Britain has often had the highest teenage pregnancy rates in Britain. This is why family planning clinics give contraception to children under 16 (despite it being against the law for children to have sex); because in reality, girls of 14 or 15 *for example) are actually having sex - and because they choose to. 15 year olds can also get free self-testing kits for Chlamydia by the way - which can only be contracted via sexual intercourse.

      A point in case was Adam Johnson. Opinion was widely split over this case. The ill-informed believe he is a paedophile, the 'informed,' such as Katie Hopkins, were vilified for correctly stating he is not a a peadophile. As we all know, paedophilia refers to pre-pubescent children only - generally believed to be ranging from around 2/4 - 10/11 years old. There is no evidence to suggest Adam Johnson is sexually interested in children of a pre-pubescent age, based on his actions with a 15 year old. Also, as many people correctly pointed out at the time, Britain's nightspots are full of '15 year old girls.' It would be very easy for an adult male to pick up a girl of this age - not realise she has lied about her age, then find out 'after the deed' that she is in fact 'jailbait.'

      The main problem with this hunting groups is that they are more often than not, run by the ill-informed, the unintelligent and the ignorant. These people often have a lack of reading comprehension (they would jump to conclusions that this post I write is advocating sex with girls under 16 for example) and they create large amounts of hysteria.

      They actually talk like girls of 15 are still playing with little dolly's and bizarrely, the public lap it up.

      The police have always targeted real offender, and while occasionally some of these hunting groups may stumble across somebody that fits this description (I witnessed such a sting last night by a group called Justice for the Innocent), the vast majority of men are quite simply, 'idiots that were cat-fished on an adult dating site).'

      Therefore, our taxpayers are currently being burdened by 'offenders' that have broken laws simply by being tempted to chat with a fictitious person on a site where there is little evidence to prove real children exist.

      So these vigilantes are not catching real offenders, nor are they protecting any real children (generally speaking - there are some exceptions where real children have been involved).

      This business of setting up decoys on adult only sites needs to be outlawed.

    I could never understand the propose of that vist to Dr Oldfield. They stood oustide his property under the cover of darkness shouting and screaming obscenities at him. Why ?? Maybe they were trying to intimidate him. They failed. My concern was they knew Dr Oldfield's partner was in that property they had no concern for her welfare what so ever. This just shows what a danger they are to soceity. At least Dr Oldfield told them all to piss off. Well done Dr Oldfield id of been tempted to of thrown a bucket of boilng water down on them. But i know you never stoop to there level.

      Nigel oldfields partner was in the pub, her and nigel oldfields local. she wasn’t at home that night. The vigilantes went to the pub where she already was before going to Nigel’s oldfields flat. This is why Nathan hunter brags he bought his partner a drink from a real man.

    They had no right and no reason to go near Dr Oldfield his partner or his property. Dr Oldfield hasn't done anything wrong infact its been nearly 20yrs now since Dr Oldfield was convicted after being stitched up. So they weren't on a sting they were there to cause trouble and upset Dr Oldfield's partner. These dangerous vigilantes need to stay away from innocent people. Its disguting they should been ashamed of there behavior.
