Child sex offender in B.C. released on strict conditions
"CN served 5 years in Thai prison for sexually abusing 2 boys
The B.C. man known as the swirly-faced pedophile [sic] has been released from police custody
Convicted child sex offender and former teacher CN will be released from custody under strict conditions imposed by a B.C. judge in Richmond today."
He has not been charged in Canada, but on Wednesday the judge in the case ruled the 37-year-old former Maple Ridge resident will be subject to 12 conditions for a period of 18 months when he is released.
The conditions include:
>No contact with anyone under the age of 16.
>No access to the internet by computer or phone.
>No access to school grounds or anywhere children might be expected to be found.
>Surrender of his travel documents.
The Crown asked for the conditions to be in place for up to two years, but N's lawyer argued for a shorter term of one year.
N's lawyer, Mark Thompson, said his client is not sure what he will do next.
"He's worked basically all his adult life," Thompson said.
"He can't teach children. I understand he was teaching English in the Thai jail, so he can teach adults [good luck with that]. He has to get a job of some kind, whether it's just something that doesn't require contact with the public ... He does want to work though."
According to Thompson, N's family members in Maple Ridge, B.C., want nothing to do with him."

B.C.'s ‘Swirly Face’ child-sex offender released from custody
"Defence counsel Mark Thompson called the conditions “onerous,” but told the court Neil would abide. He added Neil is not the worst among sex offenders out there.
“I understand the police are going to be watching him for some time anyway.
I don’t think in the short term there’s anyone that needs to be worried about him,” Thompson told reporters outside court.
Neil was given the opportunity to speak in court but his lawyer declined on his behalf.
Other court conditions include Neil not being allowed within 100 metres of any place where children can reasonably be expected to be.
He has to also let law enforcement examine his electronics and storage devices if asked, is prohibited from accessing the Internet, needs to carry a copy of his conditions whenever he’s outside his residence, and must attend a clinic — though he’s not required to undergo treatment unless he desires it.
In 2008, Neil was found guilty of abducting a minor and distributing photos of obscene acts and sentenced by Thai officials to six-and-a-half-years in prison. That sentence was later halved by a Thai appeal court."
"Brian McConaghy, a former Mountie who now runs victims protection agency Ratanak International, applauded what he called quick action by authorities.
“I’m happy. The more conditions the better,” he said outside court. “I think it’s been done well, been done quickly, in terms of having conditions on a man that is fairly dangerous towards children.”"
