Pedophile Outpatient Treatment Units Proposed in Finland

"Åbo Akademi University psychology experts want to set up community-based pedophile treatment units in Finland. They will soon present the treatment program and its 450.000€ estimated cost to the Ministry of Justice. This financing would cover costs for the Helsinki-based program for two years. The model for the program is taken from Germany.

“The current risk of committing sexual abuse of a child among these people is 20% in a five-year period. That number can be cut in half with treatment,” Santtila says.

In Germany, there are two community-based programs for pedophiles who have committed no crime. Three hundred people, mostly men who have wives and children and are employed, have been treated so far. These people are aware of the fact that they have a sexual interest towards children and they do not want to commit a crime,” says Professor Pekka Santtila, the driving force behind the proposed project.

The treatment center, which could accept 15-20 people each year, will be implemented with group therapy and also possibly drug therapy. Under Santtila’s leadership, a test for pedophilia based on visual stimuli in order to find pedophiles in prison. A computer-based test will be published within a few years, but it can already be used in an experimental version."

Pedophilia [sic] causes [sic] great suffering and high costs in reduced work capacity, mental health care and penal and judicial systems."
