First, There Was The Word

... and the word was Censorship

*****

"ABSTRACT

The legal and psychological research surrounding online Child Sexual Exploitation Material (CSEM) is focused on visual depictions of children, either as still images or movies.

Narrative CSEM (N-CSEM) describes an under-researched area, resulting from difficulties surrounding its conceptualisation, both legally as well as concerning the function for its users.

The current study describes an initial attempt in defining N-CSEM in comparison to visual material, based on interviews with users of CSEM and N-CSEM and professionals working with this user group.

Thematic Analysis resulted in three super-ordinate themes. All themes were analysed and enriched from the perspectives of user- and service-representatives.

The study provides insight into N-CSEM as a separate entity from visual CSEM, challenging and informing legal decision-making and assessment and treatment providers for users of CSEM.

KEYWORDS: Child sexual exploitation material, Narrative Child Sexual Exploitation Material, thematic analysis, child abusive images, online sex offending"

My soul is criminal

"We live in ever more hateful times. This ongoing prosecution, in which a suspended policeman is charged with the newly invented crime of reading erotic short stories, pushes the envelope of feminist sex-hostility another notch forward and inspired the following essay from me.

When words are criminal, so are thoughts. Whether thoughts are written down or not makes no moral difference, and any words that sexualize a minor are criminal. My opinions on "child" sexuality (referring to anyone under 18) are fundamentally criminal, and only technical and resource limitations (mind reading technology is not there yet) prevents the state from convicting and imprisoning me. Notice that the law covers every medium of thought currently accessible to the police, and if they could read our thoughts directly, they would surely do so and base their prosecution on it."

Suspended sentence for former Met police officer’s stack of child abuse images

"The way in which the new guidelines operate is still settling down (they were only ‘in force’ from 1 April 2014), however in relation to image offences it seems rather straightforward. There are 3 categories (formerly the courts used the COPINE scale which placed images into one of 5 categories) A, B and C. The guideline states:

In most cases the intrinsic character of the most serious of the offending images will initially determine the appropriate category. If, however, the most serious images are unrepresentative of the offender’s conduct a lower category may be appropriate.

That places L (almost unarguably) into category A. Not only are those the most serious, but also, the “justice” of the case is done by categorising this as a Cat A case as most of the images are at that level.

The starting point is therefore 12 months custody. Add in the aggravating features such as the use of police property, the fact he was a serving police officer and the number of images – not an extremely high number but it is clear that this is not a case of experimentation which was quickly desisted.

Take account of the mitigation, including the PTSD, the alcoholism and his previous character (serving in the army and the police etc.) and the guilty plea, a sentence of 12 months does not seem inappropriate."

THE FAKE SOUND OF MEDIA MORALITY

"Save your sympathy.
Who'd you think you're fooling?
Everything is dead
Now you welcome me
to A Town Called Hypocrisy"

"Here in the UK, that we have lived through an eye-opening couple of years is undeniable. For those of us still able to stop, think for ourselves and engage in cognitive thinking, life has been become a pretty incredulous experience. This wouldn't be so bad if 'thinking' wasn't becoming such an old-fashioned concept. For those of us with a degree of intellect, warning signs are flashing away at us madly. I largely eschewed the printed propaganda of the so-called newspapers years ago, last I knocked watching 'mainstream TV' on the head on account of it being utterly dire. The use of online 'social networking' may well be next to go for me - it's soul destroying watching 'The Descent Of Man' unfurl before my eyes, grown adults reduced to reactionary rants purloined from the gutter press or 'sharing' infantile pictures and/or 'jokes'."

Online pornography: what's legal and what's not

"Bad porn dialogue is in, but sexting is out. So say bye-bye to your Snapchat and 'private' Instagram accounts.

It's August, and David Cameron's family-friendly domestic internet blocks are rolling out across the UK.

Part of a larger government initiative to prevent "poisonous" pornography websites from "corroding childhood", these filters will make online adult content opt-in only, and possessing extreme material - such as images depicting rape or violence - will become a criminal offence.""

Porn is about fantasy sex - and the truth is that some women have rape fantasies. But this is very different from the real thing

"It does not mean we would enjoy being raped, or that we deserve to be raped. Let's not teach teenagers that Planet Porn is inextricable from the Real World."

"If we are honest with ourselves, a lot of women have indulged in sexual fantasies about rape. This does not mean we would enjoy being raped, or that we deserve to be raped, in the Real World. Interestingly, few women I know would openly admit to this. The reason I happen to know it’s true is because I’ve interviewed a lot of men who say that their partners have admitted to having rape fantasies in moments of intimacy that can only exist between lovers."

No Image Is 'Good' Or 'Bad'

Teachers should give lessons in pornography and tell pupils 'it's not all bad', experts say

">Recommendations suggest teachers confront 'myths' about porn
>Guidance could have significant influence in British schools

Teachers have been encouraged to introduce pornography into the classroom, using sex education lessons to explain that porn is 'not all bad' and 'hugely diverse'.

The recommendations, included in an educational guide, suggest that teachers confront 'myths' about porn and inform children as young as five about sexualisation.

The guidance could have significant influence in British schools after the Government's decision to keep sex education lessons voluntary, leaving schools to devise their own ways of teaching the subject."

The Right To Have Access To Ideas And Information Regardless Of Their Social Or Moral Worth Is A Fundamental One

Monday 18 March 2013

So, should porn be censored?

"Those who insist that porn should be censored or regulated claim that it sexualises children and promotes immoral behaviour. Others are happy to live with ‘healthy’ adult porn but want to ban porn which degrades women or celebrates sexual violence. Some are comfortable with all sorts of obscenity but feel that child porn must be criminalised.

As someone who takes freedom of speech and of expression seriously, I reject any form of censorship – including of obscene material. The right to have access to ideas and information regardless of their social or moral worth is a fundamental one. Those who, like me, believe the world would be a better place if we didn’t have the industrialisation of porn should counter this phenomenon by challenging the culture that underpins it, not through censorship."

Security Settings in File-Sharing Software May Lead to Unintended Sharing of Child Pornography

"Peer-to-peer or P2P file-sharing software can get you into a lot of trouble - including criminal trouble - if you are not careful about your privacy settings.

Peer-to-peer or P2P file-sharing software allows computer users to remotely share files, including images and videos, with other users across the world with the same software installed. It may seem harmless, but it can get you into a lot of trouble - including criminal trouble - if you are not careful about your privacy settings.

Whether you were using Limewire, Shareaza, BitTorrent, Kazaa or another file-sharing program, making sure that your security settings are properly set may save you from dealing with the North Carolina or federal authorities. Without properly setting up your P2P software to keep private files private, you may unintentionally end up sharing content that was meant for no one but yourself. If that content contains illegal child pornography, you can quickly find yourself facing serious distribution of child pornography charges rather than simply possession charges."

EU set to vote on blanket porn ban; internet freedoms at risk

"Summary: In a severe threat to online freedoms in the region, the European Parliament is set to vote in the next week on 'a ban on all forms of pornography in the media'.

The European Parliament will vote next Tuesday on a report that could lead to a blanket ban on pornography in any form of media, not limited to advertising, television, and radio, but also on the web.

In the process, it could have wide-ranging implications for freedom of expression in the 27 member state bloc.

Titled "Eliminating gender stereotypes in the EU" [woosh, because that is what it does, right?], the report, on the face of it, would allow the EU to help secure the rights for those across the gender spectrum, particularly women, who are objectified, and those in regions where gender roles are "shaped and imposed" by social influences, such as in the media and education."

EU porn ban: ‘Censorship disguised by noble idea’

"Reinhardt speculated that the reason politicians are increasingly eyeing the Internet is because they are terrified by its power.

“I think they are somehow threatened by the Internet,” Reinhardt said. “I think it is very easy to control TV and some other channels, but it is very difficult to control what is going on on the Internet. It is a very new medium. People are discussing very freely and I think politicians on all levels are trying to find out if there are new and different ways to control what is going on on the Internet and control the public and free opinion there.”"

Uganda Threatens Miniskirts Ban in Anti-Pornography Drive

"A woman wearing a miniskirt takes part in a protest against the idea that provocatively dressed women are to blame for sexual assaults, in Jakarta September 18, 2011.

Miniskirts could be banned in Uganda, in a move that critics claim will create an "apartheid system" in which women are treated as second-class citizens.

As part of the anti-pornography bill, a range films and TV programmes would be banned, and internet use monitored by government officials, reports the Guardian."

Policeman cleared of animal porn charges

"A POLICE officer has been cleared of possessing extreme pornographic images.

GR, aged 26, a police officer who was previously based in Farnworth, was accused of having two animal porn videos on his mobile phone.

A jury of seven women and five men at Minshull Street Crown Court, Manchester, yesterday took just 25 minutes to unanimously find him not guilty of the charges.

PC R told the court that the images were sent to him by a colleague while he was doing temporary work at a TV licensing firm in Preston between April and August, 2006."

Phone porn sentence u-turn

"A TAXI driver who ended up with a criminal conviction after his mate sent a film of animal porn to his mobile phone has won his fight against a 100-hour unpaid work order.

BAS, 39, Shevington, “did nothing to solicit” the illegal movie and tried to delete it from his phone, but his lack of technological know-how let him down, a London hearing was told.

Having thought he was rid of the illegal bestiality image, he went on to download music to his PC from his phone - along with the extreme porn film.

The image was discovered by police in May last year and he was arrested and his computer seized.

He pleaded guilty to possession of an extreme pornographic image at Liverpool Crown Court in August."

Dundee man jailed for possessing 'extreme pornography'

"SR was jailed for possessing "extreme pornography"

A Dundee man caught with thousands of indecent images of children and more than 200 hours' worth of "extreme pornography" videos has been jailed.

"Sheriff Davidson said: "You had images featuring women having sexual relations with an extraordinary range of animals, as well as some of the most extraordinarily vile material I've ever had the misfortune of viewing.

"You need help - but that won't help the children who have been damaged for profit or the women who have been humiliated by having relations with animals and exposed to frankly unspeakable risks.

"The only option that can protect the public worldwide is to impose an extended sentence.""

‘Seek help before we seek you out’ is advice from police

"The top cop in charge of catching child porn offenders in Herts has urged anyone who thinks they may be at risk of this type of offending to get help before it is too late.

Det Chief Insp Glen Channer, who heads up the Herts child protection and paedophile [sic] units of around 30 specially trained officers, said: “If someone is convicted they will become a registered sex offender and they will go on a sex offenders programme. They should seek help now.”

"He said that those who feel they are at risk of committing such a crime can get help by visiting their GP or by contacting the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre [mmmm, not sure on that], the Lucy Faithfull Foundation, Stop It Now or the Samaritans.""

When Drawing Pictures Gets You More Porridge

9:20am Friday 12th October 2012

Paedophile's [sic] prison term is reduced

"A paedophile [sic] who drew cartoons depicting images of child abuse [how does a drawing depict an image?] in his prison cell has had his sentence cut [barely].

APG, 38, was serving time for taking indecent photos of children [irrelevant] at Bullingdon Prison, in Bicester, when police discovered 107 “hand-drawn indecent images of children” which he said were for “his own sexual interest”. But there was also evidence that he had given some of the drawings to another inmate, Judge Andrew Gilbart QC told London’s Appeal Court this week.

The drawings were described in court as “cartoonish” in style, but also as “deeply unpleasant and very graphic”, depicting imaginary children involved in sex acts with adults. Gregory was jailed for two years at Oxford Crown Court in June after he admitted possessing prohibited images of children.

He also had a previous conviction for sexually assaulting a child, the Appeal Court heard. [irrelevant]

His lawyers challenged his sentence with claims that it was out of proportion to his offence [no shit], and the Appeal Court judges cut the term to 18 months. Judge Gilbart, sitting with Mr Justice Sweeney, accepted the images did not depict the “actual abuse of children” and concluded that the crown court judge should have “fixed a lower tariff”. [six months off, whoopy, frickin', doo]

Closeburn man found with over 200 indecent images caged

"Children’s charity NSPCC referred to Grubb’s actions as “deeply distressing”.

Matt Forde, head of service for NSPCC Scotland, said: “This is a deeply distressing case where a man has admitted creating [disinformation] many indecent images, showing extreme [weasel words] levels of child abuse [weasel word] .

“Behind these images [yes, images] are real children [same for many images, your point?] who have had to suffer terrible [weasel word] abuse [evidence?] and may [weasel word] well need support and therapy to overcome their experiences [evidence?].

“People viewing these pictures contribute to the perpetuation of child sexual abuse [evidence?, weasel word] and may [weasel word] also commit contact offences against children. [evidence and causality?]”"

'Death fetish' porn charge man acquitted

"A MAN from Stone who downloaded “death fetish” pictures from the internet has been cleared in a test case verdict by jurors of having “extreme pornography”.

The photos, posed by actors and showing scenes of women being stabbed and suffocated, were found on KW’s computer during a police raid at home.

New legislation makes it illegal to possess pornography that realistically portrays acts likely to cause serious injury to genitals, anus or breast, or death.

In the first jury trial of its kind, W, aged 47, of CD, Stone, was acquitted of four charges of possessing extreme pornography.

The jury heard the four pictures were samples from sets produced by a company called Drop Dead Gorgeous using actors and actresses for a niche pornography market known as “death fetish”."
