The Malleability of Sexual Pleasure - 'Paraphilias'

Paraphilias: definition, diagnosis and treatment

"PMCID: PMC3769077

Abstract

"There is a great deal of controversy concerning paraphilia, and defining what is normal versus deviant or disordered, given that this is to some degree dependent on cultural views of acceptability. In this article, we outline these issues and describe recent progress in diagnosing and treating paraphilias."

"Conclusion

"Delineating what is normal versus deviant or disordered sexuality is one of the biggest challenges when using the term paraphilia. The definitions under paraphilia within the DSM have been highly debated and highly controversial [22], and, given the lack of change to definitions and diagnostic criteria in the real sense, this would seem set to continue. The malleability of sexual pleasure across time and cultures creates problems for those defining and diagnosing paraphilia and the efficacy of treatment of paraphilias synonymous with sexual offending is inconclusive. The ability to imprison and/or commit an individual based on their future “dangerousness” using a mental disorder or psychiatric criterion as justification [35,36] may potentially violate due process rights [37]. At the heart of the issues still lies the much debated question: “what justifies the classification of a source of sexual pleasure or a type of sexual activity as a mental disorder” ([22] p.195)?"

A Bug's Death

Study: Sadism more common than people think

"College students told to exterminate bugs showed "acts of apparent cruelty" and "everyday sadism," said researchers

People who enjoy being cruel are scarily prevalent, new research says.

There may be more sadists lurking in our midst than we’d like to think, according to a new study from the University of British Columbia and the University of Texas at El Paso. After offering a group of college students the chance to play exterminator and kill live bugs, researchers found “acts of apparent cruelty” and evidence of “everyday sadism”-a less pathological variety of deriving pleasure from being cruel."

Sexual deviancy is normal

"Even in extreme cases, there’s “some tension” about whether sadism indicates mental illness. Not for the squeamish."

How To Diagnose A Sex Deviant?

"To make any real moral traction, we must abandon the rhetoric of righteousness and instead turn our efforts to clarifying, using science rather than scripture, laws, or even (and especially) our own gut feelings, how a sexual act or orientation is harmful to those involved. In my book, at least, doing harm is the only thing that makes a person a pervert."

What Is Truly Perverted?

"Over the 18 long months in which it was in production, Perv therefore evolved from being a light scientific treatment of weird sex to a book with an actual moral message. And that message turned out to be embarrassingly obvious, really. As a society, we’ve been dawdling over the irrelevant questions of what’s “normal” and “natural” for far too long."

We’re All Perverts

"Deviant sex, almost by definition, is bound to gross out more people than normal sex—but disgust doesn’t justify hatred.

The following is an excerpt from PERV: The Sexual Deviant in All of Us by Jesse Bering, published October 8, 2013.

You are a sexual deviant. A pervert, through and through."

American Psychiatric Association holds symposium on removal of paraphilias from DSM

"At its annual convention in May, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) held a symposium to discuss removing gender identity disorder and the paraphilias from the APA's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Paraphilias are defined as recurrent and intense sexual feelings or behavior which involve nonhumans, children, or nonconsenting adults, or the suffering or humiliation of oneself or one's partner.1 They include pedophilia, exhibitionism, fetishism, transvestism, voyeurism, and sadomasochism.

The convention was held May 19 in San Francisco. At the symposium, psychiatrist Charles Moser of the Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Sexuality and Peggy Kleinplatz of the University of Ottawa presented a paper entitled "DSM-IV-TR and the Paraphilias: An Argument for Removal.""

Exploring the landscape of DSM-5 and the Paraphilias: Background

"There has long been a certain amount of discontent with this group of diagnoses--most therapists simply ignore them, they're mostly used by groups who focus on the treatment of sex offenders, and many involved in the treatment of sex offenders ignore these diagnoses finding them useless."

The neuroscience of sexual attractions

"A recent edition of radio programme KERA Think has a fantastic discussion on development and the neuroscience of sexual attraction in its many forms.

The programme is a discussion with Simon LeVay, a neuroscientist who raised a lot of eyebrows by finding differences in the brain structure of gay and straight men in a 1991 study.

The science has massively advanced since then and LeVay gives a fascinating and lucid account of what know about the biology of the rainbow of sexual attraction – and where the mysteries still lie.

Neurotransmitters linked to mating behavior are shared by mammals and worms

"When it comes to sex, animals of all shapes and sizes tend behave in predictable ways. There may be a chemical reason for that. New research from Rockefeller University has shown that chemicals in the brain—neuropeptides known as vasopressin and oxytocin—play a role in coordinating mating and reproductive behavior in animals ranging from humans to fish to invertebrates."

Neuroscientist Larry Young on Sex, Drugs & Love Among Voles

"He doesn’t claim to have the answer for why fools fall in love, but psychiatrist Larry Young hopes studying prairie voles will help.

The Emory University professor studies the differences between species of voles with very different sexual preferences: the montane voles are the serial daters and cheaters of their world, engaging primarily in promiscuous relationships, while prairie voles are more monogamous.

By studying their brain chemistry, Young is hoping to expose the biology of fidelity and cheating, and the role that the so-called love hormone oxytocin plays in the way the voles make and break romantic relationships. TIME talked with him about his new book, The Chemistry Between Us: Love, Sex and the Science of Attraction."

Securing Real Love: Three Chemicals That Make Us Feel We’re In Love, 1 of 3

"The science of couples love is a fascinating study of human nature – perhaps at its best and worst.

Human beings get unhinged about a lot of things, yet nothing seems to compare to the actions of desperation, and the emotional roller coasters in the dance of romance."

Love and lust have distinct but interlocking brain signatures

">Brain imaging is revealing the distinct but interlocking patterns of neural activation associated with lust and love.
>Lust is most likely grounded in the concrete sensations of the given moment. Love is a more abstract gloss on our experiences with another person.
>Imaging is also helping to decipher the disorders of lust, including anorgasmia. Dozens of discrete regions across the brain fire at the point of orgasm—suggesting many different ways to develop anorgasmia.

People often think of love and lust as polar opposites—love exalted as the binder of two souls, lust the transient devil on our shoulders, disturbing and disruptive. Now neuroscientists are discovering that lust and love work together more closely than we think. Indeed, the strongest relationships have elements of both."
