The Sun on Sunday lied about me last week. Have they learned nothing?

In the general scheme of things, the crumbling economy, the savaged environment, the treacherous, inept, deceitful politicians that govern us, the corrupt corporations that exploit us, it might not seem like a big deal. That's because it isn't to anyone, except me or my girlfriend. The pain, disruption and distress, that the Sun inflicted by falsely claiming that I cheated on my girlfriend, in the context of such awesome corruption, is a pale liver-spot on the back of Murdoch's glabrous claw. Still though, it's a tiny part of the demon's dermatology and as such, connected to all the other pestilence. Here's how."

Former Accrington supply teacher charged with grooming after newspaper sting operation

"A SUPPLY teacher from Accrington has been charged with a grooming offence after a sting operation by a national newspaper.

DS, a former design technology assistant subject leader, who used to work at the Hollins Technology College, Accrington, was arrested when police acted on information provided to them by The Sun newspaper.

The 48-year-old, of [redacted], Accrington, was charged with attempting to meet a girl under the age 16 following grooming.

He appeared before Blackburn magistrates on Saturday and was remanded in custody.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: “The Sun contacted us and gave us the information.""

Operation Elveden: Sun journalists held

"Police officer also arrested as part of investigation into alleged inappropriate payments to public officials in exchange for stories

Two Sun journalists, including the paper's West country correspondent, were arrested on Wednesday by police investigating allegations of inappropriate payments to public officials.

Scotland Yard said it had detained three individuals in dawn raids, including a 51-year-old journalist who was arrested at his home in Bristol on suspicion of conspiracy to corrupt and conspiracy to cause misconduct in a public office. It is understood this is John Coles, the Sun's West Country correspondent.

The second journalist was described as a 32-year-old working for the tabloid, believed to be reporter Tom Wells. He was arrested at his house in south-east London by officers working on Operation Elveden, the Metropolitan police's inquiry into payments to police, prison officers and other public officials in exchange for stories."

"A police force appeared to abandon the concept of open justice tonight when it refused to name a suspect charged with theft after quietly changing its policy.

"The Internet has correctly been concerned at what has been perceived as the loss of a ‘right’. The proposals by the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) to refuse to release the names of people they arrest in the course of criminal investigations. The proposal has been condemned as secret justice and produced angry responses from all who claim to support ‘freedom of speech’. The ‘Leveson effect’ has duly shouldered the mantle of blame.

It seems to have escaped their notice that the ‘right’ to know the name of those arrested has never existed. 20 odd years ago, the Queen’s Bench Divisional Court in R v Secretary of State for the Home Department, ex p Westminster Press Ltd [1991] [The Times, 18 December 1991] ruled that the media has no automatic right to be informed by the police of the name of a person who is under investigation or who has been charged by a criminal offence.

It has, of course, been the case for many years that the Police choose to ignore the fact that they don’t have to give names to the media – it can be useful to them to do so for many reasons. It is noticeable that in the current furore, the Sun, from atop their high moral horse, have listed a series of sexual crimes against children which came to light after arrests were made public. It quotes one of 80 victims to call the police after “Black Cab” rapist Jon Worboys (pictured above) was arrested. He was jailed in 2009.

The 24-year-old student said: “This will lead to guilty men walking free. I only knew about Worboy’s arrest because I saw his name in the paper. How am I and hundreds of others supposed to know police are looking into an individual if it is not publicised?”[eh, when he is jailed?]

Other cases cited by The Sun include a swimming coach jailed in 2006 for sexually abusing children as young as five. It notes that four victims came forward after reading of arrests in their local papers. [ditto]

This is appealing to the current paedo-panic where ‘trawling’, as it is known, can have a dramatic effect on a subsequent charge – using the ‘similar allegations’ method of corroborating evidence. Advertising the name of an arrestee, particularly if well known or in a previously pivotal position in a child’s life, can bring forward other ‘children’, even when now middle aged, to give evidence. Or, as Peter Watt of the NSPCC told The Sun: ‘When a suspect in a child abuse case is named it gives more victims the confidence to speak out and helps ensure that justice is done.’" [or, opportunity for a little attention-seeking and a quick buck]

Julie Burchill entitled to 'offend' transsexuals, press watchdog rules

"Julie Burchill was entitled to write a controversial article about transsexuals because she was expressing her opinion, the Press Complaints Commission has ruled.

Burchill, pictured, launched the attack in defence of her friend and fellow writer Suzanne Moore.

The newspaper watchdog rejected claims that the columnist's description of transgender people as "d**** in chicks' clothing" and “a bunch of bed-wetters in bad wigs” was inaccurate or misleading.

It was “clear” from the tone of the article that Miss Burchill was using the phrases to voice her views, the regulator said, adding that the comments were "clearly distinguished from fact"

The article did not breach the PCC’s rules on discrimination because Miss Burchill did not single out any individuals, but referred “to transgender people generally", a ruling by the watchdog said."

Comment:

Few support freedom of speech, as much as we do, but, it is such inconsistencies, in logic, interpretation and decision (this stems from the PCC's media-protecting 'Code of Practice'), which has led to their downfall.

In doing so, due to their past ineffectiveness (in particular, against bullying, corrupt, lying and dangerous 'journalists'), this has led to the post-Leveson cull, which the media are now whining about; the PCC is, predominantly, the media and their associates.

Get them out, as soon as is possible, so that a consistent, agreed and evidenced-based approach may be adopted.
