One of the biggest obstacles that people with a criminal conviction face in Britain is securing employment. I have discussed and argued this topic many times during my journey through the criminal justice system, and, as I approach the completion of my sentence, I have a fairly good understanding of how the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) operates.
Over the last 12 months we have seen the effects that the DBS (formerly the Criminal Records Bureau) can have on people with convictions from decades ago. 2012 saw candidates for the role of Police and Crime Commissioner withdrew because of historical offences.
Of course, there has to be screening in place. Arguing for the complete withdrawal of such a process would be futile. But the approach the British have towards the disclosure process is tyrannical to say the least. There is now a whole new business area involving companies that will undertake DBS screening on behalf of other companies (for a fee, naturally) and on most application forms there is a part that makes most people I know with convictions give up the prospect of working for that company."

This costs as little as £3.79 and the turnaround time is around two months. The report will satisfy a job application’s conviction-reporting requirements for any Malaysian company. However, any reference to sexual offences or sexual convictions is not allowed and will be considered a breach of the rules. This means that people with convictions for sexual offences should take particular care not to disclose their offence type, explicitly or implicitly. As a result, if you feel that it is not possible for you to meaningfully contribute without disclosing such details, you should refrain from using the forum. Please be aware that there will be a strict moderating approach taken to this change, and this rule applies across the entire forum."
"We are conscious that a number of people who have significantly contributed to the forum, particularly Forum 2, will be upset, disappointed or distressed by these changes [you are a charity, right?]."

Brampton moves to licence clowns, Santa Clauses & magicians
"Brampton council is moving ahead with plans to licence clowns and other children’s entertainers despite objections from city staff and those working in the industry.
Councillors voted on Wednesday in favour of Coun. Paul Pelleschi’s motion, which would require criminal background checks for clowns, Santa Clauses, magicians and the like. The entertainers would also have to pay a nominal fee."

The future of ACPO remains a matter for its members alone – and all government funding to the association has now ceased, the Policing Minster has re-iterated.
Addressing colleagues in the House of Commons, Damian Green praised the professional body for their help in establishing the College of Policing, but that the way forward now rested with the chief officers themselves.
Mr Green was speaking after a question from fellow Conservative member Julian Smith, who maintained that ACPO was “well past its sell-by date”.
Mr Smith asserted: “(The Association) seems to spend more of its time protecting its members than helping the government with their reform programme.”"

How big is the gap between the number of rape cases and convictions?
"While all the figures quoted in the Independent infographic are taken from the official data held by the Ministry of Justice, it doesn't account for the subtlety needed to properly understand them.
The 95,000 rape cases identified by the paper is the upper boundary to an estimate that includes attempted rapes, while the figures given for prosecutions and convictions refer to individual offenders, rather than the cases they are associated with, and therefore aren't directly comparable to the 95,000 figure."

The source said a user, who had been banned several times for trolling and harassment, emailed BBC executives asking if they were aware Thorn Tree was full of porn and swearing.
''They discovered that if you looked for terms like 'paedophile' or 'child prostitution', you got Thorn Tree hits,'' the source said.
''The hits are mostly discussions of current events or pointless stuff that would have been moderated, like 'Barney the dinosaur is a big purple paedophile'. However, someone found a thread about 'what's the age of consent in Mexico?' That really set them off.

"AM was found dead at his home in Luton after denying sex assault charges in court
A hospital worker from Luton suspended over an alleged sexual assault was allowed back to work and abused [allegedy] 14 more victims, a report has revealed.
AM, 28, was accused of carrying out abuse on the stroke ward at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital between October 2008 and January 2011.
He took his own life before the case came to court."

'Don't put children's pictures on Facebook': School's warning to parents
"PARENTS are being warned not to post holiday snaps of their children on social media sites amid fears the pictures could become "useful" material for paedophiles.
The head teacher at Anlaby Acre Heads Primary School has written to all parents stressing the potential dangers of sites including Facebook and Twitter.
A head teacher has written to parents asking them to 'consider the clothes worn' by children before posting photos online ...
The letter from Rachel Robinson asks parents to "consider the clothes worn" by children in holiday, dance class and swimming gala photos before posting them online because they can be easily shared.
It comes after the East Riding Safeguarding Children Board revealed it is dealing with issues relating to "unsolicited photographing" of minors.
In the letter, Mrs Robinson warns: "When you are innocently updating your status with the highs and lows of the day you don't always know who is watching."
While the safeguarding board has defended the letter as informative, some parents have said they found it offensive.
One parent who asked not be named, who has a seven-year-old son at the school, said: "I think this is an example of the world gone mad.
"It's up to us what we post on our personal Facebook pages.""

Airline 'treating men like predators'
"Virgin Australia has been accused of treating male passengers like paedophiles after it made a man swap seats because he was beside two unaccompanied minors.
The company has defended the policy as in the interests of children.
Sydney fireman Johnny McGirr, 33, said he was flying home from Brisbane in April when he took his seat next to two boys he estimated to be between 8 and 10 years old.
He was assigned the window seat but sat in the aisle seat so the two boys could look out the window.
However, a flight attendant approached him just as passengers were asked to put on their seatbelts, asking him to move.
Mr McGirr said when he asked why, he was told, "Well you can't sit next to two unaccompanied minors."
"She said it was the policy and I said, 'Well, that's pretty sexist and discriminatory. You can't just say because I'm a man I can't sit there,' and she just apologised and said that was the policy."
