Killers' life terms 'breach their human rights'

"The appeal was brought by three killers - Jeremy Bamber (L), Douglas Vinter (C) and Peter Moore

The European Court of Human Rights has ruled the whole-life tariffs given to murderer Jeremy Bamber and two other killers breached their human rights.

The judges ruled by 16 to one there had to be a review of the sentence and the possibility of a release.

But they said this did not mean there was "any prospect of imminent release". [no shit]"

Child pornography offender seeks to keep identity secret

"A man jailed for child pornography offences is at severe risk of suicide if he is named publicly, the High Court in Belfast has heard. As he sought to ban the media from revealing his identity, a judge was told the level of threat had been assessed as “immense”.

A lawyer for a court reporter defending the proceedings warned of the potential consequences for open justice.

Convicted paedophiles [sic] and murderers could also try to stop their details being disclosed if anonymity was granted, the defence claimed."

Child porn offender cannot be identified

"A MAN jailed for child porn offences cannot be identified because publicity could lead him to commit suicide, a High Court judge ruled yesterday.

In an unprecedented case he was granted an injunction based on medical evidence which established the risk to be real and immediate.

'No tolerance' for sex offences, police warn

"Suffolk Police’s Time to Stop campaign is sending out a message to people across the county that sex crimes of any kind will be not be tolerated.

Det Insp Tonya Antonis, of Suffolk Constabulary's Gemini Team, said: “Rape is rape and there are no excuses, there is no grey area.

“Men need to understand that if a woman says no or is incapable of consenting, for instance through drink or drugs, they are committing a criminal offence.

She added: “If there is any doubt the likelihood is that you are committing rape and therefore hold yourself up to being arrested, convicted in a court of law and potentially placed on the sex offenders register.

“Don't let your festive night out turn into a life sentence.”

There were 373 serious sexual offences recorded in Suffolk this year between April 1 and November 30."

Repeat rapists to face life sentences

"Criminals who commit a second serious sexual or violent offence will be given automatic life sentences under a new “two strikes and you’re out” law from tomorrow. Repeat rapists to face life sentences

The crackdown on repeat offenders will apply to anyone who initially served more than 10 years in prison for a range of offences including rape, inciting child prostitution and terrorism.

A mandatory life sentence will mean criminals convicted of one of these offences twice will spend either the rest of their life either in prison or on licence in their community.

If the repeat offender breaches the terms of that licence at any point they could be immediately recalled to prison."
