"A charity has told Tyne Tees that 'sexting' has become so common that some children are being asked to take topless photos of themselves two or three times a week.
A national charity says the problem of sexting has become so common that girls are being asked to pose for pictures two or three times a week. Sexting is where children take explict pictures of themselves and send them to friends or post them on the internet."

The invention of yet another form of abuse
"A new report claiming that thousands of British children are being sexually exploited is built on alarmist moralising rather than hard facts.
A new report from the UK Office of the Children’s Commissioner, titled Inquiry into Child Sexual Exploitation in Gangs and Groups, shows that policy-led research is still flourishing in Westminster.
The key thing about such research is that it is commissioned to provide evidence for what policymakers already believe to be true. In other words, such research is really just policymakers’ prejudices masquerading as a piece of academic work. The authors of this new report explain that what ‘prompted’ their inquiry was ‘mounting concern about child sexual exploitation and the inadequate responses to it’. That is, the people behind the inquiry already knew there was a ‘mounting’ danger out there; the only problem was finding some evidence to prove the existence of this danger."

Children’s minister Tim Loughton said too many children are being sent to care homes far from friends and families, in areas surrounded by bail hostels, registered sex offenders and drug users. Ms Berelowitz produced her report after the sentencing in May of nine men who groomed and abused young girls in Rochdale.
She said: “We are finding that this is happening in all parts of England, rural and urban. In cars, taxis, home, rented accommodation, bus stations, parks, open spaces, beside canals, in open corridors of flats, hotels, schools.
"Almost in any place I am afraid. It is violent and sadistic in nature. I have never come across the scale of violence and sadism I am encountering now.”"

Care home reforms aim to halt child sex abuse
"The government has published plans to combat the sexual exploitation of children in care homes in England by gangs.
The move acts on recommendations made by the deputy children's commissioner in a report on sexual exploitation.
The conviction this year of nine men in a child sex ring sparked concerns about the safety of children's homes. [N.B. not "bail hostels, registered sex offenders and drug users."]
Children's Minister Tim Loughton said: "These are big changes to a system, which has been letting down too many."
In May nine men were jailed for being part of a child sex ring in Rochdale - one of the girls was in care at the time and all were said to have been known to social services at some point."

"Recent reports of rampant child abuse in the UK owe more to the sordid mindset of officialdom than fact.
‘Sadistic child abuse is rife across Britain, MPs warned’; ‘Girls of 11 doing sex acts on rows of boys’; ‘Child abuse taking place in every “town, village and hamlet” in England’...
The origin of these depressing, not to mention salacious, headlines was England’s deputy children’s commissioner, Sue Berelowitz. Speaking before the House of Commons home affairs select committee as part of its inquiry into child sexual exploitation and so-called street-grooming, Berelowitz seemingly couldn’t stop herself from giving vent to her pervy imagination. ‘We should start from the assumption that children are being sexually exploited right the way across the country’, she said, seemingly oblivious to the rather sordid nature of such an assumption. Perhaps spotting a few raised eyebrows, she cited a source: ‘As one police officer who was the lead in a very big investigation in a very lovely, leafy, rural part of the country said to me: “There isn’t a town, village or hamlet in which children are not being sexually exploited.”’
On and on she went, coupling shrill assertion with allusions to proof. ‘In urban, rural and metropolitan areas’, she continued, ‘I have hard evidence of children being sexually exploited. That is part of what is going on in some parts of our country. It is very sadistic. It is very violent. It is very ugly.’"

A lesson in how not to abolish a quango
"Here, then, is an object lesson in how not to abolish a quango. Instead of disposing of a superfluous, largely powerless and discredited body, the government has given it a new lease of life, new powers and a stronger voice to criticise government. Not only has the coalition lost an opportunity to save the taxpayer £3million pa, it has - whilst almost certainly ensuring that the quango's budget will continue to grow - also generated additional, unquantified, cost to taxpayers by giving the OCC power to make new demands on the public sector in response to its findings."

Michael Gove is a brave and brilliant man, but handing head teachers the freedom to set staff pay is pointless
"Maybe Mr Gove's decision to expand, not close, that most useless and hubristic of quangos, the Office of the Children’s Commissioner, was another such. As Jill Kirby asked in her incisive blog on Conservative Home yesterday, “Would Michael Gove, if acting alone, have appointed John Dunford (a vocal opponent of free schools) or succumbed so readily to the “children's rights” lobby? Wouldn't sheer common sense have informed him of the fallacy of assuming that one man (or woman) should have the power to speak for 11 million children?”"
