Heck, Heck, Heck ... how do you define 'Abuse'?

Do you ever ask these questions, of yourself, or do you apply the terms, without definition?

Circumcision Consent Forms Kosher in NYC

"Orthodox rabbis cannot perform a certain form of ritualistic circumcision without warning parents about the possibility of transmitting herpes, a federal judge ruled.

Metzitzah b'peh is the name given to a ritual involving oral suction of the blood from a circumcised penis.

City health officials estimate that 11 newborns contracted herpes from this practice since the department began tracking such cases in 2000.

Since infants have underdeveloped immune systems, herpes put 10 in the hospital, and killed one, the city says.

On Sept. 13, 2012, the New York City Board of Health amended its code to mandate the disclosure of health risks associated with the practice."

Child protection officers remind people to help children stay safe over Christmas

"He said The Children Act 1989 states that abuse should be considered to have happened when someone's actions have caused a child to suffer “significant harm” to their health or development."

Lessons from the Sandusky Case: 4 Things Every Parent Should Know About Childhood Sexual Abuse

"The FBI report on the Sandusky sexual abuse case is very disturbing. My fellow parents have used words like horrible, shocking and disgusting. As parents, we read the headlines and feel powerless. But there are serious lessons we can learn from this case. What do we need to know to help break the cycle of shame, secrecy and ignorance that allows sexual abuse to continue? As a clinical psychologist, here are four things I think every parent should know about childhood sexual abuse:

1) Sexual abuse is rampant.

2) Sexual abuse is rarely about "stranger danger."

3) We need open, ongoing discussions with our children about sexuality, their bodies and trust.

4) Every child is everyone's business."

Researchers See Decline in Child Sexual Abuse Rate

"Anyone reading the headlines in recent weeks has come away with an unsettling message: Sexual predators seem to lurk everywhere.

Overall cases of child sexual abuse fell more than 60 percent from 1992 to 2010, according to David Finkelhor, a leading expert on sexual abuse who, with a colleague, Lisa Jones, has tracked the trend. The evidence for this decline comes from a variety of indicators, including national surveys of child abuse and crime victimization, crime statistics compiled by the F.B.I., analyses of data from the National Data Archive on Child Abuse and Neglect and annual surveys of grade school students in Minnesota, all pointing in the same direction.

From 1990 to 2010, for example, substantiated cases of sexual abuse dropped from 23 per 10,000 children under 18 to 8.6 per 10,000, a 62 percent decrease, with a 3 percent drop from 2009 to 2010, according to the researchers’ analysis of government data. The Minnesota Student Survey charted a 29 percent decline in reports of sexual abuse by an adult who was not a family member from 1992 to 2010 and a 28 percent drop in reports of sexual abuse by a family member. The majority of sexual abuse cases involve family members or acquaintances rather than strangers, studies have found."

Mary Kenny: My point is simple: not all 'child sex abuse' is the same

"Have we now got to the point where no rational discussion of child sex abuse can take place? There is so much anger out there -- particularly directed at the Catholic clergy -- that debate on the subject is soon drowned in a sea of verbal abuse.

However, I also think there is a point to be made about clarifying the phrase 'child sex abuse'. It seems to me to be a reasonable observation that not all "child sexual abuse" is the same.

There is a difference between the penetrative rape of an innocent six-year-old, and the "fondling" of a knowing 15-year-old. Yet the phrase "child abuse" is commonly used to cover the entire gamut. Following a discussion on the Pat Kenny programme yesterday morning in which I was asked to discuss clarifying definitions of 'child sex abuse', I received the full blast of anger that surrounds the subject.

I was called, in emails, a "sick, twisted old cow"; a "degenerate old pervert . . . a pig"; I was told that I should be dead, as a disgusting defender of paedophiles [sic]."
