A DECENT NEW FILM BY DAVID KENNERLY

"There’s a fantastic new film out today but I have a bit of a problem if I try to big it up too much. It’s the greatest thing you’ll ever see but I can’t say so on account of an embarrassing personal detail, namely that I have an – ahem, excuse me – starring role! So that’s why I am mentioning it only down-page rather than giving it top billing. On this occasion I am quite happy to play second fiddle even to Stinson Hunter!

The real star of A Decent Life: The Dissenting Narrative of Tom O’Carroll, is the director, David Kennerly, who has miraculously managed to turn the pig’s ear of my discarded interview last year for Testimony Films into the silk purse of a 11-part, all-singing, all-dancing (well, not by me!) epic, which is launched today and can be seen on YouTube. The segments are each just a few minutes long, hence easily viewed at separate sittings, while the complete work is a little over 68 minutes.

David, as those who have been around at Heretic TOC since the inception will know, has been a guest blogger here a couple of times, debuting in 2013 with a piece about his childhood in the American Midwest and returning last year to warn about the menacing advance of securocratic government.

He studied at film school and has been involved professionally in film production. I didn’t know this background, but when he was liaising with me to make A Decent Life (his title not mine, in case you’re wondering, and I like it) it became obvious to me he has the relevant skills.

David first went to work on the audio of the Testimony Films interview last year, producing Stitching Up Steve Humphries, Humphries being the guy who conducted an interview on behalf of Testimony, which, in the light of what happened later, appears to have been designed to stitch me up as the interviewee. In making his pitch to me, Humphries had come across as a very sympathetic figure, emphasising his background as a social historian, and his interest in hearing a diverse range of views on sexuality, including mine.

The interview was to be part of a documentary on paedophilia he was making for Channel 4 called The Paedophile New Door. When this was aired, however – without any footage from his interview with me – it became overwhelmingly clear his position had all along been fundamentally hostile to mine. It looks as though he ditched my contribution because he had failed to trick me into saying anything that would discredit me: his would-be stitch-up had unravelled.

What David did was to turn the tables on Humphries, stringing together the audio of all his questions but without giving a word of my responses. This cleverly exposed his stitch-up tactics for what they were.

In A Decent Life, by contrast, he has done the exact opposite. This time we hear not a peep from Humphries. Instead, he has given full rein to my responses without them being butchered to quote me out of context or otherwise discredit my contribution.

I like the result and I hope you will. If you agree A Decent Life is a good film, please Tweet about it or give it a plug wherever you can, online via the social media or elsewhere. Thanks!"

The rise of the lachrymocracy

"What proved particularly tough for me was an unexpected visit by Humphries to a difficult time in my past, when I was young. I am not sure why I was so unprepared. In retrospect, the topic in question was an obvious one to explore.

My mistake was to assume I needed to focus my preparation solely on rational arguments and scientific evidence, and how to present things in a rhetorically persuasive fashion.

This all seemed very remote from ancient details of my personal history. In retrospect it was a silly oversight on my part, but that is with the benefit of hindsight.

OK, time to stop beating about the bush. I was overly emotional.

My paternal lineage is Irish but I was brought up in 1950s England into the culture of the British stiff upper lip. I hate the public displays of emotion that are so ubiquitous in the media these days, which appear to have started in the UK with the mass lachrymosity of the British public in response to the death of Princess Diana (a person most of the “mourners” had never met and knew little about) and which now extend to the winners (and losers) in televised cake-baking contests and such like: no event is too trivial to be the occasion for weeping these days.

As for more serious matters, we are not so much a liberal democracy now as an increasingly illiberal lachrymocracy: it is the weepers and wailers – sometimes with good cause but often not – who call the dirgical tune and imperiously demand we should all sing it."

"But enough. The audio is here, on Dropbox."

Stop selling Halloween outfits that demonise mentally ill, says minister

"Address by Norman Lamb to care conference follows outcry over marketing online of ‘psycho’ and ‘schizo’ joke costumes.

"Norman Lamb, the Liberal Democrat care and support minister, will give a speech urging retailers not to “demonise” people with mental health problems by selling trick-or-treat and party outfits that mock psychiatric patients.

His address to the National Child and Adult Services (NCAS) conference in Manchester comes after several joke outfits depicting dangerously violent mental patients in chains and wearing masks made headlines after going on sale online.

Lamb is due to tell the conference: “For me it is horrendous that, this Halloween, a young person experiencing a mental health crisis could easily come across someone in a ‘psycho ward’ or ‘schizo patient’ costume – complete with handcuffs and ripped restraints – as much as they could see someone in a Dracula costume.

“This Halloween culture is dangerous. It conditions all of us to fear mental illness, to see people as ‘psychos’, or ‘schizos’, [or 'paedos'], or ‘freaks’.

It makes us believe that mental illness is something otherworldly. We have to tackle this damaging stigma which prevents young people from seeking help when they need it, or talking about any problems they might be having.

“Everyone should be able to enjoy Halloween but I urge all retailers to behave more responsibly – don’t demonise mental illness.”"

Try To Be Mindful, Paul

Paul has his PR hat on - very serious and grumpy.

*****

23 July 2014

Paul Farmer of Mind apologises [why?] after report that pro-paedophile leader spoke at 1975 event [and]?

"The head of the mental health charity says he is horrified [why?] by the revelation about the Paedophile Information Exchange, and says Mind will review its archives to assist the government's inquiry into historical child abuse.

Mind has apologised for allowing the chairman of the Paedophile Information Exchange, a pro-paedophile activist group, to speak at an event organised by the mental health charity in the 1970s.

Paul Farmer, chief executive of Mind, said that the charity was horrified to have given "any sort of platform to such a despicable organisation as the Paedophile Information Exchange". He said: "Mind does not associate with, condone or endorse any pro-paedophilia organisations or individuals." [why not?] The incident was uncovered during an investigation by The Times newspaper.

The Times reported today that the event, which took place in 1975, was a two-day workshop organised by Mind for professionals to explore the psychological impact of sexuality and attended by individuals who described their own experiences. [excellent]

The newspaper said that literature promoting sex with children [promoting, how? Discussing AoC?] was available at the workshop and also highlighted an article published shortly after the event in Mind Out, the charity’s newsletter, that listed PIE as one of the "organisations to write to" about sexual minorities and included its address.[correct - still 'is']

The PIE representative was not named in the Mind Out report about the event but The Times said the person had since been named as Keith Hose, then chair of the organisation, which was disbanded in the 1980s. [disbanded?]

Farmer stressed that the charity has never had any formal relationship with PIE.

"The event was not designed to promote or justify paedophilia in any way [sic], but rather to help professionals better understand the perspective of the people they worked with and treated," he said.[indeed, and what has changed?]

"We are not able to verify if any pro-paedophile literature [sic] was sold at this event, but if this was the case then that would clearly have been a mistake and regrettable [why?]. The article in our Mind Out journal is a factual write-up of the day’s events. We are appalled to learn that PIE was listed as an ‘organisation to write to’. This was clearly the wrong decision."[why?]

Mind said it would assist the government’s inquiry into historical child abuse by searching its archives. "We support the call for PIE to form part of the national inquiry into child abuse and we have set in motion a review of our archives to establish what further information, if any, we have about PIE, so that we can share it with the inquiry," said Farmer."

"Essentially, paedophilia is just a sexual orientation. People with this orientation have the same moral choices as anyone else i.e. to behave with decency and restraint or to force onto others their preferred type of sex. Ssasz (2002)"

[Ssasz (2002) - although, the passage, above, is absent, Ssasz does say "Saying that a priest who takes sexual advantage of a child entrusted to his care "suffers from pedophilia" implies that there is something wrong with his sexual functioning, just as saying that he suffers from pernicious anemia implies that there something wrong with the functioning of his hematopoietic system. If that were the issue, it would be his problem, not ours. Our problem is that there is something wrong with him as a moral agent. We ought to focus on his immorality, and forget about his sexuality" ...

... perhaps, this was the 'correction' - "I have a total responsibility concept of life. Disease is not an excuse ..."]

Paedophiles living in my area

"Scotman - "Paedophilia is not a mental illness, but is regarded as a 'disorder of sexual preference', to quote the World Health Organisation formulation". Essentially, paedophilia is just a sexual orientation. People with this orientation have the same moral choices as anyone else i.e. to behave with decency and restraint or to force onto others their preferred type of sex. I have suffered from depression and my uncle suffers from schizophrenia, as does my friend's daughter (following being spiked with ecstacy at the age of 14). These are mental disorders - none of us choose to have a mental disorder, but schizophrenia and other conditions like it, can be controlled and/or treated using prescription drugs and counselling etc. Can paedohphilia and violent sexual tendancies be managed in this way? It has been proven to not be the case. Paedophiles themselves have sometimes expressed scepticism about the feasibility of 'treatment'. As one convicted paedophile commented: "There has been a considerable amount of discussion recently about rehabilitating, even curing paedophiles. I do not believe this is possible. I am a paedophile" (Atherton, 2001).

I have taken these quotes from MIND in Manchester website.

So no, Scotman, I am no psychiatrist - however, before I go spouting off at the mouth, I make sure I am well informed and know a little of what I am talking about."

The Challenge For Andrew and Dr Powell

Here is the challenge, Dr Graham Powell (even though, you did turn to The Dark Side, which actually explains your back-peddling).

Provide us with a reading list etc, which you believe, changes anything, from what you had available in 1981 (please provide those sources, as well).

Prove to us, via these papers etc, that Child Sexual Activity (CSAc), is the causal antecedent of serious harm/trauma, in other than a tiny number of people (even in those).

In fact, we will settle for non-serious harm/trauma figures and evidence, at this stage.

We await anything, that you would like to provide, to substantiate your claims.

Paedogate puts the past in the pillory

"You know when a scandal has made it to the news big league when it gets the “gate” tag, like Watergate. Well, the last ten days or so in the UK have given us Paedogate, in which the rabid right wing Daily Mail launched a sustained campaign to expose left wing support for the Paedophile Information Exchange (PIE) when I was its Chair back in the 1970s.

The aim was clearly to embarrass and undermine three leading figures in the Labour party. It worked. Initially dismissed as old hat because the story had been around for years as vague internet gossip, the Mail’s detailed trawl through publicly accessible archives and their own newspaper cuttings library paid off. At last, the rest of the national media finally sat up and paid attention in a big way. The Labour trio who were under fire, thanks to their work for the National Council of Civil Liberties (NCCL), to which PIE was affiliated, were forced to respond publicly. Harriet Harman, now Deputy Leader of the Labour party, angrily denounced the Mail. She had been an NCCL legal officer. Patricia Hewitt, a former cabinet minister in Tony Blair’s government, had a tougher hand to play because she had been NCCL’s General Secretary and had been closely associated with the organisation’s own very radical policy on the age of consent. She was forced into an apology in which she disowned this policy and also wrote ..."

So Correct (Almost Totally, In Fact), We Will Reproduce It All

The NCCL was right to affiliate with PIE

"If civil liberties groups won't defend free speech for the unpopular, what's the point of them?

To see the parlous state of moral and political debate in twenty-first-century Britain, look no further than the Harriet Harman / PIE scandal.

Here, in this resuscitation of old claims and smears about the relationship between the National Council for Civil Liberties (NCCL) and the Paedophile Information Exchange (PIE), we had an opportunity for a serious debate about freedom of speech and association, about whether even the most unpopular groups in society - and what could be more unpopular than an organisation of self-defined paedophiles? - should have the right to exist and to give voice to their ideology.

But instead, we’ve ended up with yet another shrill clash of competing paedo smears, with the Daily Mail suggesting that Harman (who was legal officer of the NCCL from 1978 to 1982) was a friend of perverts, and Harman’s backers in the press countering that actually it’s the Daily Mail that ‘sexualises children’. All matters of principle in the old NCCL / PIE relationship have been brutally elbowed aside by every side in this smear-fest disguised as a debate, where the national sport of ‘Hunt the paedo’ has trumped measured discussion of rights, freedom, and unpopular causes.

You’d never know it from the media frenzy, but there are some important principles at stake in this flashback to the old ties between the NCCL and PIE - primarily the principle that even the most unpopular people in a society should be free to associate with each other and to propagate their ideas and advocate for legal change. No, not free to abuse children or plan to abuse children, as some individual PIE members were arrested for doing, but free to express an outlook, however warped that outlook might appear to the rest of society.

The truth is that the NCCL was right both to have PIE as an affiliate and to defend its members against charges of ‘corrupting public morals’. Why? Because a key role of any civil liberties group worth its name is to defend the rights of association of the most loathed sections of society, to ensure that even the profoundly unpopular enjoy the same liberties, most importantly freedom of speech, as the respectable and the right-on.

For all its faults, the NCCL of the 1970s and early 1980s was a pretty good civil liberties organisation, certainly in comparison with the aloof, lawyerly outfit it has become in recent years under its new name of Liberty. Indeed, its willingness to have PIE as an affiliate, and to defend its members against the ‘crimes’ of publishing a non-pornographic magazine and posting private letters to each other containing sexual fantasies, shows just how serious it was about civil liberties, and that it possessed that key belief that should motor all defenders of freedom - that the freedoms of speech and association are universal and must extend even to those we hate or simply do not understand.

Reading the smearing articles about Harman - and also Patricia Hewitt and Jack Dromey, two other Labour bigwigs who were leaders of the NCCL when it had PIE as an affiliate between 1975 and 1983 - you could be forgiven for thinking that the NCCL had helped to facilitate actual acts of paedophila. It didn’t, of course. What it did was protect the freedom of individuals to promote the idea of paedophila and to define themselves as an association of paedophiles. And anyone who truly believes in freedom of thought and speech must, as an absolute bottom line, appreciate the fundamental moral difference between acts and ideas. Acting on paedophilic thoughts is a crime, as some PIE members discovered; having and voicing paedophilic thoughts is not, or at least shouldn’t be. There is a profound difference between breaking the law against child sex and campaigning for a change in the law on the age of consent, however perverse the reasoning for that campaign might seem. It is to the NCCL’s credit that it recognised this.

The NCCL’s involvement with PIE consisted primarily of defending its right to propagate its ideas and to exist as an organisation. It did not fight for the ‘right’ of PIE members to rape children, but rather defended PIE’s right to lobby, to publish a magazine with paedophilic ideas, to advocate for the abolition of the age of consent, and to post private letters to one another describing fantasies. Incredibly, some PIE members were actually arrested for doing that, for ‘sending obscene material by mail’ by writing personal letters to one another that were not publicly disseminated. If you do not recognise that as a pretty tyrannical assault on freedom of thought, then you need to go back to school and retake Liberty 101. The NCCL’s defence of PIE’s right to exist and its right to share ideas and information was correct and admirable.

If civil liberties organisations won’t defend the freedoms of speech and association of unpopular groups, then what is the point of them? Respectable groups don’t find their freedoms curtailed. The Women’s Institute is not prevented from publishing its ideas; Labour Party members aren’t arrested for what they write in private letters. It is only the moral outliers of a society who have their right to propagate their beliefs hammered by the authorities, whether it’s gay pornographers, the hard left, Nazis or self-confessed paedophiles. It is the freedom of speech of these deeply unpopular causes that true civil libertarians must defend, firstly because we recognise that freedom of speech means nothing unless it extends to everyone; and secondly because if we allow the state to define a certain outlook as so foul that it ‘corrupts public morals’ and thus must be extinguished, then we set a very dangerous precedent that might one day reach to us and call into question the acceptability of the views we hold, too.

In the US, where there is a far healthier attitude to freedom of speech, civil libertarians have for a long time asserted that it is entirely possible to defend a group’s right to exist, speak and publish (not to abuse, I reiterate) while simultaneously finding what that group says to be outrageous and grotesque. So the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has defended the right of American Nazis to hold a march in a predominantly Jewish town - not because it likes Nazis (some of the ACLU’s leading figures are Jews whose forefathers were obliterated in the Holocaust) but because it recognises that a serious commitment to political freedom means defending it even for the ‘enemies of freedom’.

Indeed, the ACLU has also defended the speech and association rights of paedophilic groups. In a court case in the early 2000s, it represented the North American Man-Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) in a civil suit in which the association was being sued by the parents of a 10-year-old boy who was raped and murdered by two paedophiles. The parents claimed NAMBLA’s (non-pornographic) website fuelled the outlook of the two paedophiles. The ACLU argued that there was no evidence to back this up and defended the right of NAMBLA to continue publishing its ideas and campaigning for the abolition of the age of consent.

Why did the ACLU do this? Not because it is pro-paedophile, of course, but because it is pro-freedom of thought – consistently and seriously. It recognised how extremely unpopular NAMBLA is; in her book Free for All: Defending Liberty in America Today, Wendy Kaminer, a leading member of the ACLU at the time of the NAMBLA case, and today a contributor to spiked, said ‘virtually no group of people is more unpopular’ than paedophiles and revealed that ‘the ACLU [was] excoriated by many and lost considerable support’ over its decision to defend NAMBLA. But it was the right thing to do, she wrote, because a ‘simple appreciation of freedom of thought and expression’ should make it clear that we must have freedom even for ‘offensive, unpopular speech’.

‘The notion that pubescent or prepubescent children may enter into consensual, mutually beneficial sexual relationships with adults seems deeply flawed to me, but so do a lot of ideas I don’t share’, wrote Kaminer. If libertarians ‘only protected sensible speech, we’d inhabit a very quiet nation indeed’, she said. That, right there, is a principled commitment to freedom of thought and expression, where it is recognised that even ideas we find flawed or foul should not be censored, and the groups who espouse them should not be broken up. The NCCL once took a similar Voltairean approach to freedom of speech and organisation, and it is now lambasted for doing so.

There have been two responses to the return of the NCCL / PIE scandal: the illiberal side says the NCCL was disgusting and crazy; the other, pro-Harman side is little better, saying, ‘Look, the Seventies were weird and sexual liberation went too far, so you can’t blame the NCCL for stupidly having PIE as an affiliate’. Both sides avoid the question of principle, the question of whether - regardless of PIE’s perverted ideas and massive unpopularity - it was right for civil libertarians to defend its right to exist and to speak and organise. The fundamental thing that was different in the Seventies was less the out-of-control sexual liberation stuff than the fact that civil liberties groups genuinely believed in civil liberty. It is the ditching of that core commitment to freedom in recent years, not least by Liberty itself, which means so many can now look back in horror at the fact that libertarians defended the right even of paedophiles to publish words and arguments. The coming back to life of the NCCL / PIE scandal really confirms how alarmingly illiberal, how disconnected from true freedom of thought and Voltairean ideals, modern Britain has become.

It’s easy to have a pop at Harriet Harman, even easier to mock the Daily Mail for being hypocritical. But that’s enough easy posturing. Let’s now ask some hard questions. Do you support the right of paedophiles to set up an organisation (no, not a child sex ring, but a campaigning organisation)? Do you support the right of paedophiles to publish their ideas and their written fantasies? Do you support the right of paedophiles to campaign for a reduction in the age of consent? Do you support these rights even though you find the content of the material being published and the arguments for a lower age of consent to be deeply immoral and perverse? I answer yes to those questions. How about you?

In defence of the dark Seventies

"E is for ENLIGHTENMENT.

They might have had some trouble keeping the lights on in the 1970s, but in other ways the ‘dark decade’ looks quite enlightened. Of course, in much of Seventies Britain racism was not so much acceptable as obligatory. But building on the gains of the 1960s, big strides were made in the struggle for female emancipation and gay liberation, and for rights and freedom of expression more widely. It was in this pro-freedom atmosphere that, as Brendan O’Neill has argued on spiked, it would have been weird if a civil-liberties group such as the NCCL had not defended free speech for the odious Paedophile Information Exchange (which is in no way the same thing as defending child-sexual abuse).

The Seventies brought the last set-piece showdowns between the old moral pillars of the British Establishment and the new wave unleashed in the Sixties. The two most notorious of these were the 1971 obscenity trial of the editors of the alternative publication, Oz – which involved the spectacle of the children’s cartoon character, Rupert Bear, standing trial after Oz pictured him having sex with a naked granny – and the 1977 private prosecution for blasphemy brought by Mary Whitehouse against Gay News, over a poem in which a Roman centurion fantasised about having sex with the crucified Jesus Christ. Both trials initially went the way of the prosecution – the Oz editors were jailed, the Gay News editor given a suspended prison sentence – but in the longer run, the public response to the harsh sentences served only further to discredit the old censorious laws.

The irony is that while these battles for freedom of expression were being won, in the student unions the new strand of politically correct No-Platform censorship was growing. Twenty years later, those student union prigs were running the country."

‘Everything should be open to question’

"‘You want to set up social institutions that accept that everything is open to question. Individuals don’t have to be open to doubt, but the system always should. It should always be checking and looking for mistakes. That’s institutionalised doubt, and it’s what liberal society fundamentally does. It looks for mistakes. It’s a constant, 24-hour, worldwide hunt for error. And all it asks of people is not that they be individually doubtful or squishy or moderate; all it asks is that they acknowledge the legitimacy of a social system that is based on doubt.’

Or, as the motto chosen by the Royal Society of London in 1660 put it, ‘Nullius in Verba’ (On the word of no one).

This is why the right not to be offended is so dangerous; it threatens the process by which we, as a society, develop knowledge. As The Kindly Inquisitors puts it: ‘The truth is that liberal science [Rauch’s term for knowledge production] demands discipline as well as licence, and to those who reject or flout its rules, it can be cruel. It excludes and restricts as well as tolerates… It does not give a damn about your feelings and happily tramples them in the name of finding truth… Self-esteem, sensitivity, respect for others’ beliefs, renunciation of prejudice are all good as far as they go. But as primary social goals, they are incompatible with the peaceful and productive advancement of human knowledge. To advance knowledge, we must all sometimes suffer. Worse than that, we must inflict suffering on others.’"
