Opinion: Nintendo got it right on Alison Rapp's firing
"Nintendo made a smart decision in a bad situation.
Nintendo fired Alison Rapp, and it's the right call. Not because of a smear campaign, which was utter horsesh*t, but because of her words and actions while employed at Nintendo.
Let's address the smear campaigns. They originate from her detractors finding a publicly available academic writing from her college days. It seems to take an unpopular stance on Japan's right to make their own laws regarding depictions of child sexuality. It's an uncomfortable topic to be sure, but any topic should be open to properly researched and reasoned academic discourse. Barring her actually diddling children, she did nothing wrong by discussing a controversial subject, even if you don't agree with it.
If that was the sole reason for her firing, I would be there with the rest of the pitchfork-wielding mob, but it's not.
Rapp chose to write about child sexuality and air controversial opinions on social media sites, and made no bones about her posts being intentionally inflammatory. She (allegedly) moonlighted as a model for suggestive photos, and posted a sample from her “shoot” on her twitter. There's nothing particularly bad about any of these things on their own.
The problem is that Alison Rapp was employed by Nintendo of America in the PR field. You know, the only major video game company that's adamant about catering almost exclusively to children and families. We can clearly see Rapp was aware that she needed to be careful about what was and wasn't appropriate, given her position with Nintendo and working with children, but that didn't stop her from making “edgy” posts on twitter, be they serious or in jest."

Internet Trolls Win?
"Internet trolls use various tactics to shame, discredit, harass, isolate, and mentally/emotionally torture individuals. They don’t refrain from even going through their target’s garbage to find something that points to a skeleton in someone’s closet.
Over the past few months, internet trolls have caused quite a lot of commotion for a Nintendo Employee named Alison Rapp, a female mid-level marketing face of Nintendo America. For months, internet bigots made sure they shamed, isolate, discredit, harass Ms.Rapp in every way possible.
They believe that Ms.Rapp is somehow responsible for their favorite Nintendo games being censored in America. An amorphous group has targeted her relentlessly, going as low as using her Amazon wishlist and an anime pillow to shame her.
Pointless and desperate petitions were also filed in order to get her fired from Nintendo. Unfortunately for them, nothing worked and even petitions were taken down as they violate community guidelines."
http://segmentnext.com/2016/03/31/nintendo-just-fire-someone-internet-trolls-demanded
Why did Nintendo fire this woman?
"Nintendo fired a woman named Alison Rapp on Wednesday, a decision that's putting the spotlight back on harassment in the gaming industry.
Rapp worked in marketing at Nintendo and has been a vocal advocate for women in gaming.
She was also a frequent target of online vitriol from supporters of a movement known as GamerGate. The movement purports to promote ethics in gaming -- but has been condemned for harassing women and their supporters in the gaming industry.
It was this harassment that Rapp posits cost her her job.
Rapp had found herself in the hotseat over Nintendo's decision to tone down its sexualization of girls in games, according to Kotaku.com. Though Rapp wasn't involved in the decision-making process behind these changes, she become a sort of scapegoat for those who disagreed with Nintendo.
For its part, Nintendo (NTDOF) said it let go of Rapp -- who had been at the firm since 2013 -- because it discovered she was "moonlighting" with a second job, which it said it doesn't allow."

"Dan Jarvis (Shadow Minister (Justice); Barnsley Central, Labour)
To ask the Secretary of State for Justice if he will support the implementation of Eve's Law [sic] in respect of the protection of victims of domestic violence.
Damian Green (The Minister for Policing and Criminal Justice; Ashford, Conservative)
It is vital that our courts system protects victims of crime. Eve Thomas met with my officials recently. We are considering the important points she has made, and we will look at whether and in what circumstances protection might be extended.
It is already open to a judge in a civil court, on application of a party, to make an order to ensure that certain personal information, such as an address, remains confidential during proceedings. This is a matter for the discretion of the judge, taking into account the circumstances in each individual case.
Any party in Family Proceedings who does not wish for their contact details (or that of any child) to be made known to anyone may file a Form C8. The details can then only be disclosed by an order of court."
http://www.theyworkforyou.com/wrans/?id=2014-01-14a.181812.h
But, the defendant, in a civil offence, silly Ms 'Eve Thomas', did not bother doing so.
Perhaps, the selling of her books and, her revealing interviews, with a number of newspapers, were more important to her?

That this House recognises that victims of domestic violence and abuse are being placed at risk when forced to give their safe address in open court in unrelated proceedings; supports Eve's Law to address this dangerous anomaly; further supports Eve's Marker which would red flag the personal information of a victim of abuse as confidential and highly sensitive and would ensure that the data would never be publicly disclosed unless exceptional circumstances demanded it; notes that Eve's Law would protect victims of domestic violence in court on an unrelated matter; further notes that Eve's Law would close an anomaly which may deter victims of domestic violence from reporting abuse; and urges the Government to introduce Eve's Law."

Thursday 27 March 2014 (Afternoon)
Public Bill Committee: Criminal Justice and Courts Bill
"New Clause 16;
Protection of confidential information for victims of domestic and sexual abuse
Mr Vara: I thank the hon. Gentleman for his comments on this important issue. I hope that I am able to give him some comfort about what the Government are doing.
There already exists a range of statutory and non-statutory obligations on courts and other bodies that together provide a high level of protection of an individual’s personal information. All individuals, but especially victims of domestic and sexual abuse, will have a genuine reason for wishing to avoid information such as their address from being disclosed unnecessarily and inappropriately. The need to disclose must be and is balanced with the need for courts to have essential information to administer justice and enable effective enforcement of judgments and orders.
Committee members will be aware of a campaign by Eve Thomas for Eve’s law and a marker to protect against disclosure of the personal information of victims of domestic violence. That stems from experience of civil enforcement proceedings to which Ms Thomas was a party. I am very grateful to her for raising this important issue.
Parties in civil proceedings are under a basic obligation to reveal their residential addresses, as must those providing witness statements in support of a party. Understandably, that may give rise to legitimate concerns from victims of abuse about the risk of disclosure to perpetrators. To guard against that, civil procedure rules already protect against the disclosure of confidential information in court, and in general, the courts are sensitive to those with a genuine reason for wishing to avoid disclosing their whereabouts and find ways to accommodate that. In family proceedings, including applications for protective injunctions and orders, contact details must be given but rules provide that they will not be disclosed other than by order of the court. I assure hon. Members that this Government take the issues of domestic and sexual violence and abuse very seriously. We have established cross-Government work programmes to improve the response and provide greater protection to victims of such forms of violence.
The Government carefully considered the issues raised by the Eve’s Law campaign. We were not persuaded that a new law or statutory marker, in court proceedings or more broadly across the many areas where a victim of abuse may interact with the state and other agencies, is a necessary and appropriate response. We are looking at whether we might strengthen the civil procedure rules to make the protection in civil court proceedings more explicit. That will involve discussions with victims groups and the judiciary.
We are also considering, through engagement with victims groups, how our enforcement system does everything it can to offer protection to victims while ensuring that creditors can access justice to enforce civil judgments where necessary. Moreover, we concluded that more could be done to raise awareness and ensure that proper attention was given to the protection of personal information of victims of abuse, in accordance with existing legal and other obligations. We have already incorporated a commitment in the call to end violence against women and girls action plan 2014, published in March, to develop a new non-statutory code of practice by April 2015.
I hope that hon. Members are assured that the Government are already committed to comprehensive actions and work in relation to the protection of personal information by courts, and more widely. For these reasons, we see no need for a statutory requirement for codes of practice for courts, and I respectfully invite the hon. Gentleman to withdraw the amendment.
Dan Jarvis: I have listened carefully to what the Minister has said. Clearly, the Government accept that there is an issue here, hence the announcement made a couple of weeks ago by the Home Secretary and the Minister for Policing, Criminal Justice and Victims. I am content to look carefully at the detail of what the Minister has said. I am reassured by his response that he understands the excellent campaigning work of Eve Thomas. Given his response, I do not feel the requirement to press the matter to a vote, so I beg to ask leave to withdraw the clause.
Clause , by leave, withdrawn."

In Almost Every Instance It Is The Police Who Are Doing The Seducing, The Alluring And The Enticing

Sex Sting Backlash
"PENSACOLA, Florida - Two and a half years ago Escambia County deputies arrested 25 men in operation Blue Shepherd. Officials said the men were looking for sex with minors after chatting online. One of those men was TG.
“Once you're labeled a pedophile that sticks with you for an eternity,” says G. He's innocent in the eyes of the law--but his life has ground to a halt. This past fall his guilty plea was thrown out on appeal--the higher court saying investigators were the ones who were talking about sex with a minor--not him--G thought he was chatting with a college age woman. He says he still hasn’t fully recovered.
“For nearly three years now there hasn't been much of an improvement if I wasn't a veteran probably very bleak, probably homeless,” says G. When he’s not at school he spends much of his free time on the computer--fighting back against internet sex stings. He has built a couple of websites dedicated to the cause where he’s working with other men arrested in these stings. In most cases police post ads on adult sites like Craigslist saying they're adults--but once they start one-on-one chats the officer claims he's underage.
“In almost every instance it is the police who are doing the seducing, the alluring and the enticing,” says defense lawyer Peter Aiken. He works in Florida and specializes in defending men arrested in these stings. “The problem with the stings is they're catching 5% of the predators and they're destroying 95% of the lives of innocent men.”
According to G's analysis only a few suspects are caught with child porn. Opponents say the stings are motivated in part by the good PR they generate and also money. There’s money from cars seized from suspects and federal funding they get from the Internet Crimes Against Children division of the Department of Justice. G and others argue some police are violating the rules set out by the feds when it comes to sex stings.
“What we want to happen in Florida is the same thing that's happened in Georgia, we want the stings down, we want them investigated and to find the violations,” says G."

‘It is a source of continuing disgust and horror that even the NCCL had to expel paedophiles [sic] from its ranks [why?] in 1983 after infiltration [sic] at some point in the Seventies,’ she told me yesterday.
‘The most important lesson learned by Liberty over the subsequent 30 years was to become a well-governed modern human rights movement [hahahahaha] in which protecting the vulnerable, especially children [why?], will always come first [why?].’
With fresh light about to be shed on this dark passage in history, it’s a message that other — perhaps more guilty — parties would be well advised to heed."

Old news can be fresh news
"There was a piece about paedophiles, PIE, Harman, Dromey, Brittan and a cast of thousands in the Mail today. It supported the thesis that when there’s no real news, Dacre’s Desperadoes will either (a) invent some or (b) recycle any old sh*t. In a funny sort of way, it felt like nostalgia for those things still uninvestigated today.
Those who are aficionados of the classic Citizen Kane will recall that Charles Foster Kane starts his journalistic ‘Yellow press’ (today we’d call it Redtop) proprietorial career with the headline ‘SPANISH GALLEONS SIGHTED OFF COAST OF SOUTHERN US’. But recycling is more common these days, as even any old sh*t requires creativity – and there’s not that much of it about any more. So it is that Dacre the Mad – and pretty much everyone else for that matter – constantly presents old bollocks as fresh news: barmy beliefs about AIDS in Africa, Obama’s birth certificate, JFK’s libido, and Madeleine McCann suspects…all are fair game – albeit well hung.
Anyway, I was wondering where this could lead. One can, let’s face it, make a dramatic headline out of things that happened a long, long time ago…but of which today’s down-dumbed folks know next to nothing. People like David Attenborough have built a career on it. And if the Redtop tabloids got a serious grip on that idea, the possibilities would be without end."

By Rachel Rounds
"Vulnerable: Rachel, pictured aged 13, was abused for three years by her teacher GW.
The man standing in the dock of the crown court cut a pathetic figure.
Middle-aged with thinning hair [maybe that is why she likes Tom?] and a paunch, he wore shabby clothes and cheap shoes. I didn’t recognise him at all.
‘That’s him,’ said my mother. But I couldn’t quite believe that the man sitting a few feet away was GW, the once-trusted teacher who had abused me for three years from the age of 13."

The NSPCC is talking PANTS – as usual
"Some of the PANTS points are unobjectionable in themselves: if a child has been really upset over anything, not just sexual matters, they should feel free to talk about it. Openness and accountability are good principles. Nobody should feel they have to suffer bullying parents or teachers in silence any more than they should put up with sexual molestation or harassment. But the giveaway as to the campaign’s unnecessary negativity towards the body is right at the heart of it, plumb in the middle: PANTS: No means no. Fine, but what about Yes means yes? Whatever else this campaign is about, it is not about self-determination for kids as regards a body which is hypocritically vaunted by the NSPCC as belonging to them."

PUBLISHED: 23:05, 9 December 2012 | UPDATED: 23:51, 9 December 2012
Why weren't the police this zealous with Savile?
"It’s hard to avoid the suspicion that Yewtree is a massive public relations stunt, designed to suggest Her Majesty’s Constabulary is a caring, sensitive, fit-for-purpose public institution of today, determined to erase the errors of the past."

Max Clifford arrested in sex offences investigation
"Max Clifford Max Clifford is one of the most influential figures in British media
Max Clifford, one of the UK's leading public relations experts, has been arrested by detectives investigating historic sex offences.
The BBC understands that Mr Clifford was arrested by Metropolitan Police officers working on Operation Yewtree.
Scotland Yard said officers had arrested a man in his 60s "on suspicion of sexual offences" and had taken him to a central London police station.
The arrest is not connected to allegations made against Jimmy Savile."

Max Clifford charged with 11 indecent assaults
"PR guru Max Clifford has been charged with 11 indecent assaults allegedly committed between 1966 and 1985.
The alleged offences relate to seven different women and girls ranging in age from 14 to 19 years old.
Mr Clifford, 70, from Hersham, Surrey says the claims are "completely false"; he will appear in court next month.
He was arrested in Operation Yewtree - set up following allegations about Jimmy Savile - although his arrest was unrelated to the former BBC DJ.
Operation Yewtree has three strands. One concerns Savile's crimes exclusively, while another relates to allegations against Savile and others.
The third strand, under which Mr Clifford was arrested, concentrates on accusations unconnected to the Savile investigations but which emerged as a result of the publicity surrounding Savile.
Mr Clifford was not charged over three further allegations as there was "insufficient evidence to authorise charges", the Crown Prosecution Service said.
Mr Clifford denied the allegations against him."
