Sarah Payne's Mother Praises Rebekah Brooks

"The former News Of The World editor was "really sweet natured" and had "a certain directness about her", jurors are told.

Sara Payne, whose daughter Sarah was murdered in 2000, has praised ex-newspaper editor Rebekah Brooks and said the News Of The World had been a "force for good".

Mrs Payne gave her support to Brooks and retired managing director Stuart Kuttner as a witness at the phone hacking trial at the Old Bailey, saying the pair had provided personal support during the search for her daughter and the Sarah's Law campaign.

"It's easy to forget in these dark times the NOTW has often been a force for good and it has something to do with the people who worked on it," Mrs Payne said.

"I do not pretend they are perfect or always got things right ...""

We Know, Russell, We Know

Friday 29 November 2013 11.11 GMT

The Sun on Sunday lied about me last week. Have they learned nothing?

"Not a big deal in the scheme of things, but it's still the same fecund bone-yard of gossip, poison and lies.

Rupert Murdoch with the first issue of the Sun on Sunday.

The Sun on Sunday, which is of course the News of the World with a different hat on, lied about me last week.

In the general scheme of things, the crumbling economy, the savaged environment, the treacherous, inept, deceitful politicians that govern us, the corrupt corporations that exploit us, it might not seem like a big deal. That's because it isn't to anyone, except me or my girlfriend. The pain, disruption and distress, that the Sun inflicted by falsely claiming that I cheated on my girlfriend, in the context of such awesome corruption, is a pale liver-spot on the back of Murdoch's glabrous claw. Still though, it's a tiny part of the demon's dermatology and as such, connected to all the other pestilence. Here's how."

Comment:

Amongst other things, Professional Victim = swimming pools (money from where?) = books, books, books = claims to have PTSD = takes money from the media, time and time again = disinforms and manipulates the authorities, media and others, for personal gain, until they are disowned (except their paymasters, the criminal, News International, e.g. NOTW, The Sun etc) and then whines about them/attacks them = so 'traumatised', they cannot wait for the film to come out = no regard for the victims they create etc etc.

If anyone can make any sense of the diatribe, in the second article, please let us know, by email.

Voices In The Wilderness, Become Powerful Facts

Wednesday, August 1, 2012

Media frenzy can feed into the basest desires

"But it is usually a bad idea to draft legislation in response to dreadful pictures and appalling events.

After the murder of eight-year-old Sarah Payne in 2000 by a known paedophile [sic] living nearby, the newly appointed editor of the News of the World began a campaign for Sarah’s Law, imitating an American campaign for Megan’s Law. The proposal involved a register of sex offenders open to public scrutiny. The publicity reached a frenzy that summer, provoking vigilante incidents, one of which involved “paedo” being sprayed on a paediatrician’s home.

The agitation was revived after two horrific paedophile incidents [sic] in 2002: the murder of two girls at Soham by the school caretaker, and the abduction and killing of Milly Dowler.

The campaign for Sarah’s Law made the reputation of Rebekah Brooks, the News of the World editor. She went on to become editor of the Sun and chief executive of News International. Brooks resigned in 2011 and is facing charges over phone hacking. The scandal erupted after claims that Milly Dowler’s phone had been intercepted by the newspaper. A mobile phone given to Sarah’s mother Sara Payne by the News of the World is reported also to have been hacked.

The impact of the News of the World campaign is evident in the Home Office statistics. There are usually between 500 and 600 child abductions a year in England and Wales. In 2002-05, abductions almost doubled, reaching a peak in 2004-05 before tailing off. In recent years, the figure has reverted to normal.

The likely explanation is a reporting effect. You might think that the definition of an abduction is straightforward, but it is not.

Most child abductions are by estranged spouses or partners, or other family members. Most abductions by strangers are not by paedophiles; they are thefts of children by distressed women and the children are quickly recovered. After the extensive publicity for the killings of Payne and Dowler, and for the Soham murders, parents may have been quicker to report incidents and the police more ready to record incidents as abductions.

But the News of the World effect persists if one looks at murder of children by strangers. This is a firmer number: such events never go unreported. In England and Wales there are normally between five and 10 cases a year – but in 2002-2003 there were 17 and the following year 15.

The incidence of such killings also subsequently diminished and in the past five years has reverted to normal. It is hard to avoid the conclusion that among the perverted individuals who commit such crimes, publicity provokes imitation.

The danger to children from paedophile [sic] abduction is very small [infinitesimal]. Out of 1 million children, about 250 will die in any year, mostly from natural causes, with about 30 killed in road accidents. Six will drown and three will be murdered, most likely by their parents. Every five years or so, one child in that million will be murdered by someone he or she does not know.

In a world full of information and short of our attention, the events that affect behaviour are those that are salient. Incidents such as the Aurora massacre engage us not because such events are common but because they are rare. Our frame of reference is defined by what is reported. The phenomenon of salience gives the press a special, and disturbing, responsibility."

Fear over 'stranger danger' stops children playing outside

"Parents are developing an “irrational fear” of strangers and traffic, experts warned today, as figures showed rising numbers of families are stopping children playing outside.

Many parents are afraid to let their children play outside, according to the National Children's Bureau.

Research by the charity the National Children’s Bureau showed that under-15s are now less likely to enjoy outdoor play than in previous generations.

It was revealed that almost half of parents admitted that “fear of strangers” prevented them allowing sons or daughters from playing outside."

Hate, Harassment and Death Are Not Liberal Sensitivities

Wednesday 11 July 2012

We’re worse off without the News of the World

"Whatever you thought of the irreverent tabloid, you should be concerned about how it was airbrushed from public life a year ago this week.

Did you like the News of the World, the irreverent tabloid of some 168 years’ standing which was shut down by its owner Rupert Murdoch a year ago this week? Some people did (it had about seven million readers every Sunday), while others came out in hives at the mere mention of it. I found myself somewhere in the middle, sometimes enjoying the paper’s style and screw-you attitude while recognising that through its anti-paedophile [sic] and other shrill moral and political campaigns it did its fair share to degrade public life.

But looking back over the past year, in which there has been a huge News of the World-shaped hole in Britain, it doesn’t really matter what you thought of the paper. You should still be concerned by its absence, and more importantly by what that absence reveals about the shifting political balance in modern Britain. After all, if even an outlet as historic, profitable and popular as the News of the World can be done away with effectively for offending liberal sensibilities, what hope is there for other publications that find themselves on the ‘wrong side’ in the Culture War?"

NOTW editor 'spiked paedophilia scoop [sic] on Arthur C Clarke for fear of Murdoch'

"Ex-reporter claims story never ran because the sci-fi author was the proprietor's friend

The News of the World spiked an exclusive story exposing the science fiction writer Arthur C Clarke as a paedophile [sic], according to a new book about life inside the newspaper whose closure was announced a year ago today.

In Hack, an account of his nerve-shredding days as a reporter on the News of the World and then the Sunday Mirror, Graham Johnson claims that although the NOTW prided itself on outing pederasts, editors made an exception for Mr Clarke because he was a friend of Rupert Murdoch."

Moral Panics, Ms Sara Payne And The Open University

Moral Panics and the Media

"Chas Critcher critically evaluates the usefulness of moral panic models for understanding how politicians, the public and pressure groups come to recognise apparent new threats to the social order, and he scrutinizes the role of the media, especially the popular press. Two models of moral panics are identified and explained, then applied to a range of case studies: AIDS; rave culture and the drug ecstasy; video nasties; child abuse; paedophilia. Examples of moral panics from a range of countries reveal many basic similarities but also significant variations between different national contexts."

http://www.amazon.com/Moral-Panics-Media-Chas-Critcher/dp/0335209084

Journalism Studies, Volume 3, Issue 4, 2002, Media, Government and Moral Panic: the politics of paedophilia in Britain 2000-1

"Following the murder of an eight-year-old girl in July 2000, a British newspaper, the News of the World, campaigned to change the law on paedophile crimes [sic]. Most of its demands were eventually met. The narrative has four episodes: the initial campaign, popular vigilantism, political response and further debate and action following the murderer's conviction. A moral panic framework is shown to be applicable but ultimately an inadequate explanatory framework, having too rigid a conception of the state, primary definers and the control culture. Supplementary approaches from agenda setting and discourse analysis are needed. The distortion of the issues of child abuse and murder suggests a need for reconceptualisation of moral panics in terms of three dimensions: processes, discourses and normative affirmation."

Evil monsters and cunning perverts: Representing and regulating the dangerous paedophile

"The conceptual shift towards understanding child sexual abuse through the figure of the paedophile has several detrimental consequences. This chapter offers a critique of contemporary media and governmental/legal discourses, pointing to misrepresentation, sensationalism, demonisation and insufficient child protection. Value – This research indicates that discourses and conceptual shifts around child sex offenders are driven by the media but have come to be accepted and perpetuated by the government and the law. This dynamic not only illustrates the power of the media to set agendas but raises questions regarding the adequacy of official governance informed by media discourses."

http://www.emeraldinsight.com/books.htm?chapterid=1852834&show=pdf

Media Constructions of, and reactions to, paedophilia in modern society

"The media representation of paedophilia has been:

Problematic.
Possibly socially irresponsible.
Has contributed to the unrealistic social construction of the realities of paedophilia that exist in modern society.

The main conclusions are that:

If the media, especially the tabloid press, took a more responsible, socially conscious and informed approach to the discussion as well as to the reporting of paedophilia this could lead to a more appropriate social construction and a better informed public.

Public education through the media is not a recent phenomenon (McQuail 2007), but in the case of paedophilia it may be the best strategy to get the public to engage with a difficult and sensitive issue.

Although, the media construction and representation of paedophilia has played an important role in the current moral panic surrounding paedophilia in the UK it is not the only factor; with the public and government also playing a pivotal role.

The social construction of reality that is aided by the media can help promote an understanding of paedophilia in modern society and as such allow us to deal with this prevalent social issue in a more realistic and level headed fashion."

MORAL PANICS AND THE BRITISH MEDIA – A LOOK AT SOME CONTEMPORARY ‘FOLK DEVILS’

"The Sun has been forced to make an embarrassing apology after naming and shaming the wrong man as a sex offender. Owing to a mix up by a picture agency, the tabloid mistakenly used a photograph of David Gazley in place of a picture of Christopher Harris, who has been banned from going near children for life after groping young girls in Great Yarmouth. An apology to Mr Gazley – whose portrait appeared in Saturday’s Sun above the headline “Face of kid ban pervert” – is published in the tabloid today. “We sincerely apologise to Mr Gazley for the hurt and embarrassment caused by our report,” said the newspaper."
