"TWO people from East Lancashire have confessed to plotting to carry out an attack on a suspected paedophile in Burnley.

The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is said to have confessed to having indecent thoughts regarding a young girl.

He then suffered a serious assault as a consequence.

Sophie Louise Cooke, 21, of HS, Nelson, was originally charged with encouraging the commission of a scheduled offence, namely sexual assault, by sending a text to the victim, luring him to an address, to which she had pleaded not guilty.

But prosecutor Emma Kehoe was given permission at Burnley Crown Court to add an offence of conspiracy to commit assault, between March 5 and March 8 this year, to the indictment, which Cook admitted.

Her co-defendant Stephen Daniel Holmes, 23 of no fixed address, appeared before the court via a video link to Forest Bank Prison, near Salford.

Holmes, who was represented in court by defence counsel Simon Gurney, also admitted the conspiracy to assault charge and the theft of a mobile phone from the same victim."

Notorious child rapist DW beaten by vigilante gang who wanted him out of town

"A notorious child rapist was beaten by a vigilante gang after word got out he was staying in a local bed and breakfast.

Pervert DW was in south Dublin when locals decided they wanted him out of the area.

When he left the bedsit, he was set upon by the group in Ringsend, in the south inner city, reports the Irish Mirror.

W has now been moved to Irishtown Garda Station for his own safety and will be moved on to another location this evening.

The savage assault was first highlighted on the FM104 Phoneshow with Chris Barry last night.

No arrests have been made following the attack."

How should we deal with convicted sex offenders returning to the community?

"Recent vigilante action has sparked a debate about dealing with convicted sex offenders after release from prison.

Newstalk Breakfast spoke with Maeve Lewis, Executive Director of One in Four, and Padraig MacLochlainn, TD for Donegal North East and Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Justice and Equality, this morning.

Ms Lewis said that while she could “really understand the concern parents might have if there were convicted sex offenders living in the community” it was still important to resist any temptations to give in to mob mentality.

“I think we need to take a deep breath and stand back and a look at what is the best way to protect children,” she said.

The man attacked in the video has been widely identified in the press and on social media – by radio show hosts to politicians in recent weeks – and Chris asked Ms Lewis what the knock on effect of that could be.

“I suspect what will happen is that man is going to go underground and that is when he will be most dangerous,” she said.

“All the research shows right around the world that if we are to keep children safe, the sex offenders we know, be they convicted or not, need a number of things – they need not to be living in isolation.

“They need support from the community, they need to have meaningful work and they need to be managed by the statutory services.

“The guards, the probation officers, social workers need to know where they are and keep an eye on them.”"

"Police have interviewed at least one suspect they believe is connected to a Lansingburgh arson that displaced 13 people.

Firefighters responded to a fire around 2:30 a.m. May 1 at 250 Second Ave.

Thirteen people, including three young children, were displaced and an elderly woman nearly lost her life. Police believe the fire was an act of retaliation against Level One sex offender DD who lived on the second floor with his family.

Security footage taken that morning shows three potential suspects rushing from the building. Two of the suspects were badly burned, according to authorities. Law enforcement sources confirm that one of the suspects was recently questioned about the fire while being treated at a burn center in Syracuse."

Shoppers witnessed the assault as O was head-butted and lost two front teeth while some members of the group filmed the incident. He escaped the attack and went to the police to report the assault.

The video was later posted on Facebook with the tag “NWI Nonce Busters” – believed to be a reference to rightwing group the North West Infidels. The video has since been taken down.

“O was targeted because he had illegally arranged to meet up with an underage girl online,”

Yet the conundrum is that the sex offender most likely to reoffend is the one driven underground and isolated from society. That's not an argument for protecting perverts' rights, it's a cold fact.

Area woman convicted for harassing sex offender

"All she wanted to do, Delores Ann Harris told a jury Friday, was to protect herself and her granddaughter from a man who had been convicted 21 years ago of aggravated sexual battery, a man who has been on the state’s sex offender registry since 1997.

But the convicted sex offender in the courtroom was the victim in the jury trial. And Harris, 61, was the defendant, charged with misusing information from the sex offender registry.

It took the jury only 23 minutes to find Harris guilty and even less time to impose a $1,500 fine on her for actions that the prosecution described as a campaign of harassment against SC, 43.

“The commonwealth realizes that Mr. C is not a sympathetic victim,” Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Michael Fleming told the six-member jury during closing arguments.

But, Fleming said, the state law is clear: The state sex offender registry, including details about C, can be easily viewed on a website but the information displayed must not be used “for purposes of intimidating or harassing” another person. Violations are categorized as class one misdemeanors carrying penalties of up to one year in jail and a maximum penalty of $2,500.

Harris represented herself at the trial. In an interview after the jury verdict, she continued to deny she had done anything wrong.

“I was dumb for thinking the judicial system would work,” Harris said."

Springbank residents put [innocent] pervert out

"RESIDENTS of a Poleglass housing estate have tonight picketed the house of an alleged paedophile [sic].

Forty-seven-year-old FM of Springbank Drive was caught with ten indecent photographs of a child and subsequently charged on May 31, 2012.

He appeared in court on February 16, 2015. M's defence team did not submit any evidence to contradict the charge and he made no response when the charges were put to him.

He was released on bail to appear at Craigavon Court on March 24, 2015 to enter his plea.

Neighbours were unaware of the allegations until recently. Since being caught with the images three years ago, M continued to live peacefully in the family orientated housing estate.

Prior to being asked to leave [sic], M who uses a wheelchair – lived in a bungalow for around fifteen years and was described by neighbours as a nice person. One neighbour took pity on him because of his disability and even made his dinner. Others cleared his over grown back garden for him because they knew he couldn’t do it himself.

A taxi man who frequently picked him up and helped him in with his messages was surprised to hear of him being put out as he came across as ‘a normal fare’.

On Wednesday evening, a team of armed officers arrived in the estate to escort M out for his own safety. As he was driven away, he was jeered at and attempts made to take his photograph."

Row over housing of sex offenders

"The reopening of a north Belfast hostel has caused controversy after Justice Minister David Ford rejected calls to reconsider housing sex offenders in the facility.

Thompson House on the Antrim Road has been refurbished to house 19 offenders and is due to reopen.

The hostel is run by the Presbyterian Church and Lindsay Conway from the Board of Social Witness said the new facility is the result of a public safety debate and he claims that it will help "reduce risk".

"We are better to know where sex offenders are, that they are being monitored and that they are being kept to the special conditions of their settlement plan and that that is built into the technology and to the staffing levels in Thompson House," he said."
