New Research Says Humans Are Born That Way

New research says pedophiles [sic] are born that way
"Mental health [sic] experts in the Ozarks weigh in on new research that suggests pedophiles [sic] are born that way and cannot help their sexual attraction to children.
New research says pedophiles [sic] may be born with the urge to have sex with children, and it's already controversial. Wednesday, in a special report, we hear from people who believe it and those who don't.
Some of this new theory [sic] about pedophilia comes from studies on convicted sex offenders [oh dear]. It was done at the Criminal Center for Mental Health and Addiction in Toronto.
Here are just a few things they found: a large number [sic] of pedophiles [sic] are left-handed, at least an inch shorter than normal, about ten IQ points below average, and have less white matter in their brains. Some scientists say those are all biological so pedophilia [sic] likely is as well. Not everyone buys that though, even an actual sex offender.
This man-- we'll call him Pete-- was an eagle scout and a service member. He has a business degree and is finishing a second bachelor's in religious studies, but "it will be a cold day in Hell" is what he says a potential employer may as well have said when he applied for a job.
"On every application 'have you committed a felony, yes, what type of felony, sex offensive' and you're willing to discuss it with them in an interview but of course when they see that it never goes any further," Pete tells us.
He says that it doesn't matter that he's done a lot of good things in his life; all that maters is he's a sex offender."
"By definition Pete is not a pedophile. He's had one victim and says he is only aroused when thinking of that specific incident. Pedophiles [sic] have at least two victims in the same age range under 12, and new research suggests their attraction does have something to do with how they're wired physically."
"This new research that calls pedophilia biological, a true sexual preference, says even those who haven't committed a crime are pedophiles [sic]. That's between 1 and 5% of all men. [+MAP =?]"

Days Numbered, DSM?
Published: 05/03/2013 03:43 PM EDT
National Institute Of Mental Health To Drop DSM Use
"The National Institute of Mental Health is moving away from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, sometimes known as the psychiatrist's "bible," saying that patients deserve better.
The change won't alter the way patients get diagnosed and treated in the clinic -- at least not for many years. Instead, researchers seeking to study mental disorders with National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) funding will be required to look at patients across traditional diagnoses, rather than limiting their studies to a single DSM diagnosis such as depression, for example.
"Studies of biomarkers for 'depression' might begin by looking across many disorders with anhedonia or emotional appraisal bias or psychomotor retardation to understand the circuitry underlying these symptoms," NIMH director Thomas Insel wrote in a statement.
The DSM's fifth revision, the DSM-5, is due out in May. The book, published by the American Psychiatric Association, classifies mental disorders, and the revisions have spurred controversy. Particular disorders, such as sexual fetishes, are contested by those who would like to see them removed from the book and those who would like to see those diagnoses remain available.
Compared with the NIMH's shift, however, the DSM changes are minor. The agency is looking to improve the way mental disorders are identified in general.
"Unlike our definitions of ischemic heart disease, lymphoma or AIDS, the DSM diagnoses are based on a consensus about clusters of clinical symptoms, not any objective laboratory measure," Insel wrote.
As an alternative, the NIMH is launching the Research Domain Criteria Project. The goal, according to the agency, is "to transform diagnosis by incorporating genetics, imaging, cognitive science and other levels of information to lay the foundation for a new classification system."
The decade-long project will require researchers to include patients across DSM categories, or to subdivide the categories, when conducting research trials.
"We need to begin collecting the genetic, imaging, physiologic and cognitive data to see how all the data - not just the symptoms - cluster and how these clusters relate to treatment response," Insel wrote."

Beginning of the end of the DSM-IV?
"The National Institute of Mental Health has announced it will reorient its research away from DSM categories
What is mental illness? Schizophrenia? Autism? Bipolar disorder? Depression? Since the 1950s, the profession of psychiatry has attempted to provide definitive answers to these questions in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Often called The Bible of psychiatry, the DSM serves as the ultimate authority for diagnosis, treatment and insurance coverage of mental illness."

Mormon ex-lesbian on how she's happily married to a man as she tries to free others from 'overwhelming same-sex desires'
"A happily-married Mormon mother of three who, 30 years ago, was living her life as a lesbian, is speaking out about same-sex attraction on a new website created by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Laurie Campbell, 52, who considers her earlier life as a lesbian a sin, hopes to give other Mormons the tools to overcome their homosexual desires by speaking out on her own successful marriage to a man.
She told Deseret News: 'I'm reaching out to those who are not happy with their orientation, who don't want to be gay, and who want to free themselves from overwhelming desires that create conflict.'"

Study finds epigenetics, not genetics, underlies homosexuality
"Epigenetics – how gene expression is regulated by temporary switches, called epi-marks – appears to be a critical and overlooked factor contributing to the long-standing puzzle of why homosexuality occurs. According to the study, published online today in The Quarterly Review of Biology, sex-specific epi-marks, which normally do not pass between generations and are thus "erased," can lead to homosexuality when they escape erasure and are transmitted from father to daughter or mother to son.
From an evolutionary standpoint, homosexuality is a trait that would not be expected to develop and persist in the face of Darwinian natural selection. Homosexuality is nevertheless common for men and women in most cultures. Previous studies have shown that homosexuality runs in families, leading most researchers to presume a genetic underpinning of sexual preference. However, no major gene for homosexuality has been found despite numerous studies searching for a genetic connection."
