Funding success for Northumbria Law School

Northumbria Law School wins prestigious seminar funding

"Professor Chris Ashford and senior lecturer, Nicola Wake have been awarded funding from the Modern Law Review to run a seminar on ‘Consent, Compulsion and Sexual Offenders: The Compulsory Treatment of Sex Offenders’ to be held in March 2014.

This is only the second time this award has gone to a new university, the first time also being Northumbria in 2010 for a seminar on Expert Evidence in Criminal Proceedings.

This event will be run jointly by the School’s Centre for Evidence and Criminal Justice Studies and the Gender, Sexuality and Law Research Group. It aims to bring a new dimension to the approach of legal academics and legal practitioners to the “treatment” of sex offenders. It will bring together academics and practitioners for the first time to enable an inter-disciplinary dialogue on this topical area of criminal law and to develop a sustainable international research network.

The Gender, Sexuality and Law Research group was launched in 2013. It draws together established, early career academics and postgraduate students from a range of disciplines across the University aligned with the core theme of gender, sexuality and law. The group acts a point of focus for this growing community of scholars, and organizes a seminar series together with a range of activities to support and develop a community of academic inquiry. In the first six months of operation, the group has successfully attracted funding to explore LGBTQ law student identities, LGBTQ ‘communities’ within law schools (with Bradford University), and to explore conceptions of privacy in the context of mobile ‘dating’ Apps such as the popular Grindr and Scruff products (with Newcastle University).

Julie Burchill entitled to 'offend' transsexuals, press watchdog rules

"Julie Burchill was entitled to write a controversial article about transsexuals because she was expressing her opinion, the Press Complaints Commission has ruled.

Burchill, pictured, launched the attack in defence of her friend and fellow writer Suzanne Moore.

The newspaper watchdog rejected claims that the columnist's description of transgender people as "d**** in chicks' clothing" and “a bunch of bed-wetters in bad wigs” was inaccurate or misleading.

It was “clear” from the tone of the article that Miss Burchill was using the phrases to voice her views, the regulator said, adding that the comments were "clearly distinguished from fact"

The article did not breach the PCC’s rules on discrimination because Miss Burchill did not single out any individuals, but referred “to transgender people generally", a ruling by the watchdog said."

Comment:

Few support freedom of speech, as much as we do, but, it is such inconsistencies, in logic, interpretation and decision (this stems from the PCC's media-protecting 'Code of Practice'), which has led to their downfall.

In doing so, due to their past ineffectiveness (in particular, against bullying, corrupt, lying and dangerous 'journalists'), this has led to the post-Leveson cull, which the media are now whining about; the PCC is, predominantly, the media and their associates.

Get them out, as soon as is possible, so that a consistent, agreed and evidenced-based approach may be adopted.

The Sex Offender’s Register and the Feminist Creation of Value

"The deepest evil that feminism commits, is not the discrepancies in sentencing that men and women receive in the courts, manifold and heinous though these unquestionably are. Rather, it is the creation by feminists of the set of values and priorities that define the very essence of our ’civilisation’ itself. Equal injustice is no justice for men, and the true rape of the male stems not from double standards and unfairness in the court room, but from the ability of feminism to shape even morality into its own selfish sexual image.

Consider the sex offender’s register, and the primacy we give as a society to sex crimes above all others. Why is there no violent offender’s register? Such a register would cover violent sex offenders as well as other violent criminals. Why is a sexually incompetant man, caught exposing himself to an old lady in the park, any more reprehensible and in need of branding than a man who mugs and beats that old lady for her wallet? It is not because non-violent sex offenders are any more recidivist than a burglar or a mugger is (in fact, they are less likely to re-offend). No, it is because it is in the interests of women for a feminist society to reifie and strictly control something as natural as the male sexual urge, and to give moral primacy to sex rather than violence, just as all primitive societies do."

"SF, 47, was convicted of a string of public decency offences Changed gender and his name to 'Saralee' after his conviction in 2010

"A flasher has been let off undergoing group therapy as part of his punishment, after having a sex change to become a woman.

SF, 47, from Tyneside, was given a community groupwork programme for men after his conviction in 2010 for outraging public decency by behaving in an indecent manner.

But a court has told F he can now undergo the therapy one-to-one with a probation officer after he underwent gender realignment therapy and changed his name to Saralee."
