Would That Be 'Normal', James?

The biology of paedophilia, or why there might not be one

"James Cantor says there is not much research to support the abused/abuser theory, where a victim also becomes an abuser in adulthood.

For many of us, sexual attraction to children is difficult to understand—let alone the disregard child-sex offenders have for the physical and emotional harm they can cause [sic] Lynne Malcolm examines the emotional psychology of paedophilia and explores if the brains of paedophiles make them a biologically different class of person."

"Assoc Professor Cantor agrees that the majority of paedophiles [sic] are ‘regular everyday people.’"

"Human societies up until recently have regarded the onset of puberty and not the end of puberty as the signal for sexual maturity. 150 years ago the age of consent in England was 10, so as a society our concern about protecting children from sexual exploitation is a relatively new thing" - Professor Stephen Smallbone

We sneered [not you, you were almost still filling your nappies, Jack] at the tabloid obsession with paedophiles [sic]. But complacency is what let Jimmy Savile and Stuart Hall get away with it [sic].

"Jimmy Savile: witnesses kept their mouths shut.

We used to sneer at the tabloids’ obsession with paedophiles [sic]. Before Jimmy Savile’s disgrace [sic], the main thing liberals [?] feared about paedophilia [sic] were the witch hunts stirred up by the News of the World. Exaggerated [really Jack?] tales of mobs attacking [sic] paediatricians and the (admittedly funny) Brass Eye special, "Paedogeddon", both carried the same message: calm down. Paedophiles [sic] were freaks of nature [sic], a matter for psychologists, not public morality. [interesting interpretation, there, Jack]

Post-Savile, that view is unsustainable [sic]. It looks like [sic] the light entertainment bubble gave its numerous abusers [weasel word] astonishing opportunities. And other people’s silence and inaction allowed it to continue for decades.

The silence is one of the most shocking things about Yewtree [maybe to a kid]. As every hideous new detail emerges, one depressing sentiment repeats itself: “Everyone knew it was going on.” We’re told it was a permissive time, when paedophilia [sic] wasn’t taken so seriously. The scandal has been a watershed [sic], giving victims [sic] new strength to speak up and seek justice. But why then – given the extraordinary number of witnesses [sic] – is it still the victims [sic] going to the police?"

Jack Rivlin is the editor of The Tab, an online tabloid for students which is "neither clever nor funny", according to the Guardian. He is a former Evening Standard news reporter."
