The Sun gets regulator reprimand and publishes correction for misleading on European human rights
"Updated | Remember Inhuman Rights, The Sun’s garbled reporting of this Court of Appeal decision on Criminal Record Bureau checks? In February, I wrote this: No, The Sun, the Human Rights Act is not the EU. My complaint was about the headline, which screamed “Now EU could let fiends like him prey on your children“. This was obvious nonsense, since the judgment had nothing to do with the EU."

Child porn up ‘exponentially’ online
"The amount of child abuse imagery on the internet has increased “exponentially” and is expected to grow even more, the EU police agency has warned.
"Europol predicted “higher levels of demand” for new child abuse material, fuelled by continued advances in technology. This includes the “proliferation” of live video streaming which does not necessitate the actual downloading of material, and the expansion of cloud computing.
The EU Serious and Organised Crime Threat Assessment, published by Europol, said this is only one area of criminal activity that is set to worsen.
The agency said cyber crime will further develop as a “serious threat to society” and economic crimes, such as counterfeiting of legal products, and frauds will emerge as significant threats, aided by the ongoing financial crisis."

Official: Timely child porn prosecution a key
"In 2006, U.S. attorneys handled 82.8 percent more child pornography cases than they did in 1994.
Olson says the reason for the increase is likely due to the prevalence of child pornography and easy access to it on the Internet."

EU set to vote on blanket porn ban; internet freedoms at risk
"Summary: In a severe threat to online freedoms in the region, the European Parliament is set to vote in the next week on 'a ban on all forms of pornography in the media'.
The European Parliament will vote next Tuesday on a report that could lead to a blanket ban on pornography in any form of media, not limited to advertising, television, and radio, but also on the web.
In the process, it could have wide-ranging implications for freedom of expression in the 27 member state bloc.
Titled "Eliminating gender stereotypes in the EU" [woosh, because that is what it does, right?], the report, on the face of it, would allow the EU to help secure the rights for those across the gender spectrum, particularly women, who are objectified, and those in regions where gender roles are "shaped and imposed" by social influences, such as in the media and education."

Uganda Threatens Miniskirts Ban in Anti-Pornography Drive
"A woman wearing a miniskirt takes part in a protest against the idea that provocatively dressed women are to blame for sexual assaults, in Jakarta September 18, 2011.
Miniskirts could be banned in Uganda, in a move that critics claim will create an "apartheid system" in which women are treated as second-class citizens.
As part of the anti-pornography bill, a range films and TV programmes would be banned, and internet use monitored by government officials, reports the Guardian."

When It Comes To Imagination

EU police agency opens cybercrime unit to tackle pedophiles, fraudsters online
"Sweden's Cecilia Malmstrom, European Commissioner for Home Affairs, gestures during her address at the occasion of the official launch of the cybercrime fighting center at the headquarters of the EU police unit Europol in The Hague. The Hague, Netherlands, Friday Jan. 11, 2013.
The European Union's police co-ordination agency opened a new cybercrime unit Friday to combat online offences from banking fraud to peddling images of child sex abuse.
But as the European Cybercrime Centre, or EC3, formally opened its doors at Europol's Hague headquarters, European Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom conceded it will be playing catch-up with organized crime gangs reveling in a "Golden Age" of cybercrime.
Online criminals, she said, "are ahead of us when it comes to imagination and co-operation. (and lots of other things, too]""

Worth $250 Million Globally - Bullshit
November 26, 2012 - 12:42pm
EU to fight against online child abuse [sic]
"A new programme will join law authorities, payment firms and ISPs
European home affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom
Challenges to face sexual abuse of children on the Internet [sic] are increasing as new ways to share images or videos are appearing. To tackle the problem, Commissioner Cecilia Malmström, EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, and Rob Wainwright, Director of Europol, announced on 26 November the launch of the new European Financial Coalition against Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children Online.
According to UNODC, the online child abuse industry generates an estimated 50,000 new abuse images each year and is worth $250 million globally. In addition, 74% of victims appeared to be 10 years old and under.
Despite a big progress was already been made in this area, a migration towards more opaque online environments, such as chat groups or private or peer-to-peer file sharing networks -also called darknet-, is making more difficult to win the battle.
Because this commercial exploitation “takes new forms and is increasingly difficult to track, law enforcement needs to get a better insight into the payment and ICT capabilities of criminals”, stated Rob Wainwright."

Tackling online problem of abuse
"Europe, the US and Australia will continue to fiercely defend the open and free nature of the Internet, while at the same time stopping those who try to use it for these despicable purposes. This reprehensible conduct is not about freedom of expression - it is about criminals who physically abuse children, take pictures or videos, and distribute these over the Internet. Recipients of child pornography do not merely possess the pictures - they support child abuse by engaging in its dissemination [degrees of separation/proximity ... are you aware of the concepts, Cecilia?]"

ITU Boss Explains Why He Wants The UN To Start Regulating The Internet
"We've written a few times about why we should be worried about the ITU (a part of the UN) and its attempts to regulate the internet, to which some have responded by arguing that the ITU/UN doesn't really want to regulate the internet. However, the Secretary-General of the ITU, Hamadoun Toure has now taken to the pages of Wired, to explicitly state why he believes the UN needs to regulate the internet. And it appears that many of the initial fears are 100% accurate. We've already covered how the ITU seems to be hiding all sorts of awful scary things by claiming they all fall under the "cybersecurity" banner, and we've noted that the ITU's mandate over cybersecurity is imaginary and its history with the subject is sketchy, at best. However, in the op-ed, Toure doubles down on why the UN should be there helping countries censor things like "porn and propaganda" on the internet as a part of its "cybersecurity" efforts."

Internet Blocking
EDRi sent on 2 November 2012 a letter to Commissioner Malmström on a legal contradiction in relation to website blocking that needs to be resolved in order to bring Member States into line with the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union:
Dear Commissioner Malmström,
As you know, Member States may decide to "block" access to illegal child abuse websites according to the Directive on combating the sexual abuse and sexual exploitation of children and child pornography.
While we obviously support the fight against these crimes, the European Union's legal system is clear that criminal activity must be addressed in a framework that respects the rule of law and fundamental rights. This principle is reflected clearly in Article 52 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, which states in this regard:
"1. Any limitation on the exercise of the rights and freedoms recognised by this Charter must be provided for by law and respect the essence of those rights and freedoms. (...)"
This principle is also clear in the European Convention on Human Rights, to which the Union is currently negotiating accession. Article 10(2), for example, requires restrictions to be "prescribed by law"."

U.S. and European Union form ‘global alliance’ to track online pedophilia [sic]
"The European Union and the United States called on the rest of world Thursday to join them in a “global alliance” to combat child sex abuse on the Internet and track down paedophiles [sic].
The initiative aims to boost efforts to identify and protect victims, cut down on child pornography available on the Internet and strengthen efforts to find and prosecute paedophiles [sic], the European Commission said.
“There is … a need for more action worldwide,” EU Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmstroem said in a statement calling for the formation of a “Global Alliance against Child Sexual Abuse Online.”
“The EU and the US have taken the lead in designing the alliance, and plan to invite states around the world to join,” she said.
The US-EU agreement was reached at a ministerial meeting in Copenhagen that was attended by Malmstroem, US Attorney General Eric Holder and the justice ministers of Denmark and Cyprus.
The US and the EU plan to formally launch the global alliance in December."

EU, U.S. agree to expand fight against child porn
"Malmstrom said the benefits of international cooperation in combating such abuse was shown by a recent operation supported by 26 European countries and coordinated by Interpol that carried out a major crackdown on child pornography online.
She said that operation dubbed Ikaros had identified 269 suspects in 22 countries and led to 112 arrests and numerous children identified and rescued."
