Cyber crime is becoming a bigger threat to companies
The number of pages containing child abuse images has risen in the UK
Hacking attacks which lodge child abuse images and malware on a computer user's hard drive are on the rise, it has been warned.
In its annual report, the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) said there has been a significant increase in the number of legitimate websites being compromised.
First, the hackers infiltrate a site before planting the child abuse images and malware in folders on a hidden URL.
The folders are then inadvertently accessed by unsuspecting web surfers through a redirect link on a legitimate adult site.
When the link is clicked, the files are downloaded to the user’s computer."

"PENSACOLA, Florida - Two and a half years ago Escambia County deputies arrested 25 men in operation Blue Shepherd. Officials said the men were looking for sex with minors after chatting online. One of those men was TG.
“Once you're labeled a pedophile that sticks with you for an eternity,” says G. He's innocent in the eyes of the law--but his life has ground to a halt. This past fall his guilty plea was thrown out on appeal--the higher court saying investigators were the ones who were talking about sex with a minor--not him--G thought he was chatting with a college age woman. He says he still hasn’t fully recovered.
“For nearly three years now there hasn't been much of an improvement if I wasn't a veteran probably very bleak, probably homeless,” says G. When he’s not at school he spends much of his free time on the computer--fighting back against internet sex stings. He has built a couple of websites dedicated to the cause where he’s working with other men arrested in these stings. In most cases police post ads on adult sites like Craigslist saying they're adults--but once they start one-on-one chats the officer claims he's underage.
“In almost every instance it is the police who are doing the seducing, the alluring and the enticing,” says defense lawyer Peter Aiken. He works in Florida and specializes in defending men arrested in these stings. “The problem with the stings is they're catching 5% of the predators and they're destroying 95% of the lives of innocent men.”
According to G's analysis only a few suspects are caught with child porn. Opponents say the stings are motivated in part by the good PR they generate and also money. There’s money from cars seized from suspects and federal funding they get from the Internet Crimes Against Children division of the Department of Justice. G and others argue some police are violating the rules set out by the feds when it comes to sex stings.
“What we want to happen in Florida is the same thing that's happened in Georgia, we want the stings down, we want them investigated and to find the violations,” says G."

Psychological association admits that forensic experts are biased in favor of who hires them
"Forensic psychologists and psychiatrists are ethically bound to be impartial when performing evaluations or providing expert opinions in court. But new research suggests that courtroom experts’ evaluations may be influenced by whether their paycheck comes from the defense or the prosecution. The research is published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.
The findings reveal that experts who believed they were working for prosecutors tended to rate sexually violent offenders as being at greater risk of re-offending than did experts who thought they were working for the defense.
“We were surprised by how easy it was to find this ‘allegiance effect,’” says psychological scientist Daniel Murrie of the University of Virginia. “The justice system relies often on expert witnesses, and most expert witnesses believe they perform their job objectively — these findings suggest this may not be the case.”
Murrie and co-author Marcus Boccaccini at Sam Houston State have worked in forensic psychology for years, watching the adversarial justice system use forensic experts to gain an advantage in their cases."

The research is published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.
The findings reveal that experts who believed they were working for prosecutors tended to rate sexually violent offenders as being at greater risk of re-offending than did experts who thought they were working for the defense.
“We were surprised by how easy it was to find this ‘allegiance effect,’” says psychological scientist Daniel Murrie of the University of Virginia. “The justice system relies often on expert witnesses, and most expert witnesses believe they perform their job objectively — these findings suggest this may not be the case.”
Murrie and co-author Marcus Boccaccini at Sam Houston State have worked in forensic psychology for years, watching the adversarial justice system use forensic experts to gain an advantage in their cases."

"Norfolk’s police and crime commissioner has today underlined the force’s determination to protect victims of child sex abuse after it emerged an officer hanged himself on the day he was due to be charged with a series of serious sexual offences.
Police yesterday revealed GG had been dismissed for gross misconduct after being arrested on suspicion of a total of nine serious sexual offences.
It followed an investigation by the force’s Professional Standards Department into allegations received in April that he was suspected of being involved in online child sexual abuse offences involving victims from outside the UK."

"A Texas father walked in on his five-year-old daughter being molested and wasted no time in beating the man to death. The grand jury found the dad not guilty due to a state law that allows deadly force to be used to stop an aggravated sexual assault.
The incident occurred June 9th near Shiner, Texas. Someone spotted a farmhand, Jesus Flores carrying the girl into a secluded area and alerted the girl’s father. The concerned parent ran towards his daughters screams and found them both with their underwear off. He flew into a rage and beat Flores into unconsciousness. When he was sure the man was no longer a threat, he called 911 to report on the incident. ”Come on! This guy is going to die on me! I don’t know what to do.” he yelled.
The event was treated as a homicide but the father did not go to jail and will not be charged with a crime."

Tougher sex offender restrictions sought by campaigners
"Charities and an MP are campaigning for tougher restrictions on sex offenders, saying the system is failing to stop grooming and exploitation of children.
The "Childhood Lost" campaign says police also need powers to restrict suspects who have not been convicted.
Nicola Blackwood MP is tabling an amendment to a bill to create Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Orders, similar to anti-social behaviour orders.
The Home Office said that it would consider the campaign's proposals.
The UK has a range of powers designed to control sex offenders, including a general requirement that they inform the authorities of their whereabouts.
'Failing victims' [sic]
The main restrictive power, the Sexual Offences Prevention Order (Sopo), can curtail a convicted offender's movements, such as by banning them from parks or from near schools.
But critics say it is hard to impose conditions if they are not immediately sought during sentencing [BS], and impossible for the police to seek to restrict the behaviour of a suspect who hasn't been convicted. [well, knock us down]"
