"A man accused of being a paedophile [sic] committed suicide before he could be sentenced, an inquest heard.
Paul Hayes, 46, of [redacted], west Hull, was found hanging from his loft at home by police.
The Mecca Bingo worker was due in Hull Magistrates Court after indicating a guilty plea on two counts of possessing indecent images of children and one count of making indecent images of children.
The case was cancelled after he was found deceased at his home on December 27 last year."

"Following on from the recent blog post detailing the development of the Children, Internet, and Sex Cognitions (CISC) scale, this post will further explore the findings from this research, focusing on the permission-giving thoughts endorsed by individuals with an offence related to child sexual exploitation material (CSEM).
The figure below provides examples of permission-giving thoughts endorsed by individuals with a child sex offence, as identified by Ward and Keenan (1999). A starting point in the research that colleagues and I carried out was to explore whether these thoughts can be applied to individuals with a CSEM related offence."

A Fundamental Attribution Error? Rethinking Cognitive Distortions
"The notion of ‘cognitive distortion’ has become enshrined in the offender treatment literature over the last 20 years, yet the concept still suffers from a lack of definitional clarity.
In particular, the umbrella term is often used to refer to offence‐supportive attitudes, cognitive processing during an offence sequence, as well as post‐hoc neutralisations or excuses for offending.
Of these very different processes, the last one might be the most popular and problematic.
Treatment programmes for offenders often aim to eliminate excuse‐making as a primary aim, and decision‐makers place great weight on the degree to which an offender “takes responsibility” for his or her offending.
Yet, the relationship between these after‐the‐fact explanations and future crime is not at all clear. Indeed, the designation of post hoc excuses as criminogenic may itself be an example of fallacious thinking. After all, outside of the criminal context, post hoc excuse‐making is widely viewed as normal, healthy, and socially rewarded behaviour.
We argue that the open exploration of contextual risk factors leading to offending can help in the identification of criminogenic factors as well as strengthen the therapeutic experience.
Rather than insist that offenders take “responsibility” for the past, we suggest that efforts should focus on helping them take responsibility for the future, shifting the therapeutic focus from post hoc excuses to offence‐supportive attitudes and underlying cognitive schemas that are empirically linked to re‐offending."

Making Sense, Making Good, or Making Meaning? Cognitive Distortions as Targets of Change in Offender Treatment
"Abstract
Most structured sex-offender programs are based on a cognitive-behavioural model of behaviour change.
Within this overarching theoretical paradigm, extensive use of cognitive distortions is seen as a central core symptom among sex offenders.
However, the literature on cognitive distortions lacks a clear and consistent definition of the term.
It is unclear whether cognitive distortions are consciously employed excuses or unconscious processes serving to protect the offender from feelings of guilt or shame.
In this article, the dominant cognitive-behavioural interpretation of cognitive distortions is contrasted with two alternative interpretations.
One is based on an attributional perspective and the notion of attributional biases.
The other explanation is based on a narrative approach focusing on the action elements of cognitive distortions, that is, as something people do rather than something they have.
Clinical implications of these alternative conceptualizations are discussed and illustrated throughout by a case example."

The ‘problem’ of sexual fantasies
"Abstract
This essay explores the nature and implications of sexual fantasies. The essay begins from the apparent paradox that while it [pornography] is frequently condemned for its absolute explicitness (‘leaving nothing to the imagination’) it is at the same time condemned for arousing ‘uncontrollable fantasies’.
Several strands of theorization are reviewed, attending in particular to their shared assumption that such fantasies are essentially compensatory – making up for either stored-up problems from childhood or signs of inadequacy in a person's sexual maturation.
Challenging these accounts, the essay draws on evidence from a major investigation into the meanings and pleasures of pornography conducted in 2011, which garnered more than 5000 responses to a complex online questionnaire combining quantitative and qualitative questions.
Ten motivations for using and enjoying sexual fantasies are distinguished, within which five distinct ways of understanding the relations between pornography and fantasy are outlined: as magnifying glass, as mirror to self, as emporium, as journey, and as alternative self.
These are understood as productive of new sexual possibilities."

A team of paedophile hunters [sic] has caught 110 Britons asking a fake Filipino 10-year-old to commit sex acts for money online
The Brits were among a total of 1,000 offenders from 65 countries.
They were identified in a ten-week period by four researchers who carried out a sting by posting details of a fake girl in chat rooms.
The operation was carried out by a team from child protection organisation Terre Des Hommes Netherlands, which created a digital "avatar" of a 10-year-old girl who could interact with the offenders online.
Researchers were able to manipulate the "avatar", which they called Sweetie, to make it look like she was really talking to the offenders on a webcam.
All of the 1,000, once they got talking to Sweetie, asked the fake girl to commit sex acts in exchange for payment.
Terre Des Hommes was able to identify the offenders by getting Sweetie to ask them for their credit card details.
The names were then cross-referenced against the pictures that had been taken of them on webcam and the offenders' profiles on social media."

I ask myself, ‘what possesses them to look at the world from the perspective of a child predator’? Others praise this form of vigilante action as a form of heroic behaviour. One journalist praised them on the grounds that ‘more than 20,000 perverts were lured out when an anti-abuse group created a computer-generated ten-year-old Filipina girl called Sweetie to visit chatrooms’."

‘This is vigilantism,’ he said. ‘With all kinds of vigilante activity, you can have a very quick success in drawing attention to a problem area, but that vigilante attention doesn’t bring with it in its wake arrests and charges and convictions. You’ve drawn attention to a problem but potentially done nothing to resolve the problem.’"
