Genuinely, A New One To Us - POCD

http://fairfieldocdgroup.freehostia.com/ocdcycle.html

"POCD is widely used to refer to fears associated with paedophilia OCD, an unwarranted obsessional fear of being a paedophile.

Some sufferers use acronyms to refer to their type of OCD, but the acronym is often used as an avoidance, in this case from using the word 'paedophile'.

The term POCD can also lead to confusion over the type of OCD being referred to because some use it to describe other forms of OCD, for example postpartum OCD or 'Pure O'.

This confusion leads to delays in treatment where a person will seek specialists in POCD but are unable to find any, as POCD is not a medically recognised term.

It is also possible that thinking of the illness to be something other than Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) may also hinder progress in understanding and tackling the illness, especially if the OCD later changes guise chameleon-like.

For informational purposes the acronym POCD is most are commonly understood to refer to:

Paedophile OCD.

Because of the high risk of confusion, OCD-UK generally discourages the use of these acronyms.

Regardless of the form of OCD, it will involve both obsessions and compulsions which are the problems that need addressing, and they are all equally as treatable through Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)."

'I Was Scared I Was a Paedophile':

"17 Years Living With Intrusive Thoughts And Pure OCD

"Professional opinion is clear that intrusive thoughts do not lead to the doing of the feared action and do not indicate a moral flaw. However, socially speaking, thoughts of suicide, homicide and child abuse do not tend to make the grade as a general topic of conversation. I wrote this article to try and answer a simple question: how does one say that they have scary thoughts of child abuse without sounding like a paedophile? How does the mother explain that she thinks of harming her child without having to doubt her own sanity? How does the person who fears contracting a disease through seemingly impossible means ever sound OK? In short, how do we explain the horrors of our mind without sounding horrific?

The answer lies in understanding. Understanding that intrusive thoughts are actually just thoughts. We need not be scared or ashamed of these thoughts, no matter how sickening, shocking or horrific. And that is a wonderful thought."

Pedophile Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

"Painful, Unwanted Obsessions About Children

Although all the many ways that obsessive-compulsive fears manifest themselves can cause debilitating anguish, perhaps there is none that causes more distress than OCD with pedophile obsessions, sometimes called POCD. This form of OCD involves the fear of harming or molesting a child.

People may wonder what causes OCD to take this form. OCD has a tendency to latch onto things that are important to a person. For most parents, there is nothing more important than their children. So, imagine the distress experienced by a loving mother with a newborn baby, who imagines every day that she will do something unimaginable to her child."

So, You See, There Is No Causal Connection - It Is Later Social Conditioning - Thank You

Age of Consent

"Psychologist Jesse Bering on What the Law Says Versus What the Science Says

A 6-year-old child may subjectively experience little, if any, harm at the time of being molested by an adult, but that doesn't mean significant damage [sic] hasn't been done. As the child grows older, his or her interpretation of the experience on coming to understand what really [sic] happened may become increasingly traumatizing [sic]. One [poetic and simplistic] way to think about it is that the sexually abused child has essentially been implanted with a psychological time bomb that may or may not go off down the road. There's a marginal [sic] chance that it won't detonate at all, but if it does, it's often [sic] catastrophic [sic]. This can also be the case with teens (many of us have regrets about being taken advantage of when we were young and naive, sexually or otherwise [such is life]), but for a 16-year-old who has hormonally fueled desires that are just as intense as those of the adult he's having an encounter with, it's a very different can of emotional worms."
