Who Is Distorted?

March 2006, Vol. 12, No. 1, pp. 5

Do child molesters hold distorted beliefs? What does their memory recall tell us?

"Abstract

Do child molesters hold distorted beliefs (or cognitive distortions) that support their sexual offending? To test this hypothesis, we asked 28 child molesters and 20 inmate controls to read a description of child molestation. Within this vignette, we planted 10 ambiguous descriptions. If child molesters’ information processing were driven by cognitive distortions, we hypothesized that they would use this knowledge to disambiguate and cognitively distort each description.

This was tested by examining participants’ free recall of the vignette. Chi-square tests of association showed that both child molesters and inmate controls had various memory distortions for the vignette, but could not be differentiated based on the numbers of cognitive distortions in their recall classifications.

In other words, our findings did not support the widely held cognitive distortion hypothesis a finding which could promote substantial revision of both how we view child molesters’ ‘‘cognitive distortions’’, and how we treat them."

Cognitive ‘distortions’ and dissonance

"Such dangerously heretical thoughts nowhere find overt expression in the paper, but the exercise must have sown confusion. While it demonstrated that MAPs were not shown to think in a cognitively distorted way, it also indicates that the researchers were suffering from another interesting mental condition, cognitive dissonance i.e. psychological conflict when presented with data at odds with one’s beliefs. Given the conservative nature of their starting point, this offers the hope that they may actually be moving forwards a little, as they struggle, perhaps painfully, to accommodate the new information and make a new beginning."

Content Analysis of Cognitive Distortions in Pedophiles' [sic] Online Forum Posts

"Historically, sexual encounters between adults and children were rarely reported to authorities, and thus considered a rare problem. However, as many as 33% of girls and 14% of boys experience sexual encounters with adults and as a result may experience consequences such as aversive feelings regarding the act of sex, substance abuse, and self-mutilation. Such consequences lead research to examine pedophile’s cognitive distortions.

This exploratory study examined pedophiles’ website forum posts to determine if any posters demonstrated cognitive distortions. Four independent raters used content analysis to determine which cognitive distortions were demonstrated by the examined pedophiles.

Results suggested that cognitive distortions were not prominently demonstrated by those posting on the examined forum. Results may also suggest that cognitive distortions are not evident in a supportive environment. Results cannot be generalized to the entire pedophilic population and future research could analyze posters’ cognitive distortions over a period of time and examine which cognitive distortions have altered over time."

Is pedophilia a sexual orientation?

"Dr. James Cantor of CAMH has shown pedophilia is like a sexual orientation — a deep attraction that cannot change. Now, pedophiles who have never molested children are seeking social acceptance.

Dr. James Cantor of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health has spent the last decade on research suggesting that pedophilia is a deep-rooted, unchangeable predisposition."

Labels, Labels, Labels - Paedophilia Now Classified As A Sexual Orientation - LGBTP

Pedophilia Now Classified As A Sexual Orientation

"People can classify themselves as heterosexual, homosexual, asexual, metrosexual. There are endless sexual orientations under the sun, and now, pedophilia can be added to the list.

In the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM V), the American Psychological Association (APA) drew a very distinct line between pedophilia and pedophilic disorder. Pedophilia refers to a sexual orientation or profession of sexual preference devoid of consummation, whereas pedophilic disorder is defined as a compulsion and is used in reference to individuals who act on their sexuality.

APA's decision has given rise to numerous pedophilia-advocacy groups, the chief of them being B4U-ACT, a non-profit grassroots organization based in Maryland. Created in 2003 primarily as a means for “minor-attracted persons” to be open about their sexual preferences in a supportive atmosphere, B4U-ACT is now widening the scope of their organization.

According to spokesperson and registered sex offender Paul Christiano, the pedophilia-advocacy group is “working towards de-stigmatizing the mental health community.” Christiano explained that negative societal attitudes towards minor-attracted persons “trickle down to policy-making and the mental health community.”"

"Such a fine line separates 'profession of sexual preference' and 'having a disorder'. So fine that no anti and most other 'normal' people will not see the difference. To 'equate' pedophilia to homosexuality in this psychosocial definition is much too premature.

APA and DSM-V Confirm Paedophilia as a "Sexual Orientation"

"Well, of course, as this has now officially been reclassified (in the US at least), can we now assume that as well as being LGBTP), that the same Human Rights concerned with sexual orientation that all people quite rightly have, will now be used by paedophiles as well? Can we assume, going forward, that there will one day be no discrimination against paedophiles, who for example, apply to be teachers? Can we assume, for example, that there will one day be no discrimination against paedophiles, who apply to work in any profession with children?"

The Malleability of Sexual Pleasure - 'Paraphilias'

Paraphilias: definition, diagnosis and treatment

"PMCID: PMC3769077

Abstract

"There is a great deal of controversy concerning paraphilia, and defining what is normal versus deviant or disordered, given that this is to some degree dependent on cultural views of acceptability. In this article, we outline these issues and describe recent progress in diagnosing and treating paraphilias."

"Conclusion

"Delineating what is normal versus deviant or disordered sexuality is one of the biggest challenges when using the term paraphilia. The definitions under paraphilia within the DSM have been highly debated and highly controversial [22], and, given the lack of change to definitions and diagnostic criteria in the real sense, this would seem set to continue. The malleability of sexual pleasure across time and cultures creates problems for those defining and diagnosing paraphilia and the efficacy of treatment of paraphilias synonymous with sexual offending is inconclusive. The ability to imprison and/or commit an individual based on their future “dangerousness” using a mental disorder or psychiatric criterion as justification [35,36] may potentially violate due process rights [37]. At the heart of the issues still lies the much debated question: “what justifies the classification of a source of sexual pleasure or a type of sexual activity as a mental disorder” ([22] p.195)?"

Brain Region Tied to Compliance with Social Norms

"“We found that the brain mechanism responsible for compliance with social norms is separate from the processes that represent one’s knowledge and beliefs about the social norm,” said Ernst Fehr, Ph.D.

“This could have important implications for the legal system as the ability to distinguish between right and wrong may not be sufficient for the ability to comply with social norms.”

Said Ruff, “Our findings show that a socially and evolutionarily important aspect of human behavior depends on a specific neural mechanism that can be both up- and down-regulated with brain stimulation.”"

Correlates and Moderators of Child Pornography Consumption in a Community Sample

Ray JV, Kimonis ER, Seto MC

Abstract

"This study compares pornography users who report child pornography (CP) consumption with those who do not on demographic characteristics (age, ethnicity, and education level), psychological characteristics (e.g., loneliness, attachment style, anxiety, and sensation seeking), frequency of pornography use, and intentions to engage in contact sexual abuse.

Participants were recruited on the Internet to complete an online anonymous survey [oh dear] about "problematic pornography use." Approximately, one fifth of the recruited male pornography users (21%, n = 37) reported consuming CP. The two groups were similar on all demographic and psychological characteristics.

However, the probability of CP consumption was the greatest among men scoring high on a measure of sensation seeking who reported frequent pornography use (i.e., statistical moderation).

CP consumers also reported a greater interest in engaging in sexual contact with a minor than non-CP consumers."

Study: Sadism more common than people think

"College students told to exterminate bugs showed "acts of apparent cruelty" and "everyday sadism," said researchers

People who enjoy being cruel are scarily prevalent, new research says.

There may be more sadists lurking in our midst than we’d like to think, according to a new study from the University of British Columbia and the University of Texas at El Paso. After offering a group of college students the chance to play exterminator and kill live bugs, researchers found “acts of apparent cruelty” and evidence of “everyday sadism”-a less pathological variety of deriving pleasure from being cruel."

Risk assessment tools plagued by 'authorship bias,' study finds

"Reported predictive validity higher in studies by an instrument's designers than by independent researchers

The use of actuarial risk assessment instruments to predict violence is becoming more and more central to forensic psychology practice. And clinicians and courts rely on published data to establish that the tools live up to their claims of accurately separating high-risk from low-risk offenders.

But as it turns out, the predictive validity of risk assessment instruments such as the Static-99 and the VRAG depends in part on the researcher's connection to the instrument in question.

Publication bias in pharmaceutical research has been well documented

Published studies authored by tool designers reported predictive validity findings around two times higher than investigations by independent researchers, according to a systematic meta-analysis that included 30,165 participants in 104 samples from 83 independent studies."

Are Forensic Experts Biased by the Side That Retained Them?

"Abstract

How objective are forensic experts when they are retained by one of the opposing sides in an adversarial legal proceeding? Despite long-standing concerns from within the legal system, little is known about whether experts can provide opinions unbiased by the side that retained them. In this experiment, we paid 108 forensic psychologists and psychiatrists to review the same offender case files, but deceived some to believe that they were consulting for the defense and some to believe that they were consulting for the prosecution. Participants scored each offender on two commonly used, well-researched risk-assessment instruments. Those who believed they were working for the prosecution tended to assign higher risk scores to offenders, whereas those who believed they were working for the defense tended to assign lower risk scores to the same offenders; the effect sizes (d) ranged up to 0.85. The results provide strong evidence of an allegiance effect among some forensic experts in adversarial legal proceedings."

American Psychiatric Association holds symposium on removal of paraphilias from DSM

"At its annual convention in May, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) held a symposium to discuss removing gender identity disorder and the paraphilias from the APA's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Paraphilias are defined as recurrent and intense sexual feelings or behavior which involve nonhumans, children, or nonconsenting adults, or the suffering or humiliation of oneself or one's partner.1 They include pedophilia, exhibitionism, fetishism, transvestism, voyeurism, and sadomasochism.

The convention was held May 19 in San Francisco. At the symposium, psychiatrist Charles Moser of the Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Sexuality and Peggy Kleinplatz of the University of Ottawa presented a paper entitled "DSM-IV-TR and the Paraphilias: An Argument for Removal.""

New Research Says Humans Are Born That Way

9:39 p.m. CDT, May 15, 2013

New research says pedophiles [sic] are born that way

"Mental health [sic] experts in the Ozarks weigh in on new research that suggests pedophiles [sic] are born that way and cannot help their sexual attraction to children.

New research says pedophiles [sic] may be born with the urge to have sex with children, and it's already controversial. Wednesday, in a special report, we hear from people who believe it and those who don't.

Some of this new theory [sic] about pedophilia comes from studies on convicted sex offenders [oh dear]. It was done at the Criminal Center for Mental Health and Addiction in Toronto.

Here are just a few things they found: a large number [sic] of pedophiles [sic] are left-handed, at least an inch shorter than normal, about ten IQ points below average, and have less white matter in their brains. Some scientists say those are all biological so pedophilia [sic] likely is as well. Not everyone buys that though, even an actual sex offender.

This man-- we'll call him Pete-- was an eagle scout and a service member. He has a business degree and is finishing a second bachelor's in religious studies, but "it will be a cold day in Hell" is what he says a potential employer may as well have said when he applied for a job.

"On every application 'have you committed a felony, yes, what type of felony, sex offensive' and you're willing to discuss it with them in an interview but of course when they see that it never goes any further," Pete tells us.

He says that it doesn't matter that he's done a lot of good things in his life; all that maters is he's a sex offender."

"By definition Pete is not a pedophile. He's had one victim and says he is only aroused when thinking of that specific incident. Pedophiles [sic] have at least two victims in the same age range under 12, and new research suggests their attraction does have something to do with how they're wired physically."

"This new research that calls pedophilia biological, a true sexual preference, says even those who haven't committed a crime are pedophiles [sic].  That's between 1 and 5% of all men. [+MAP =?]"

Multi-disciplinary definitions and understandings of ‘paedophilia’

"Abstract

Despite the current high-profile concern over paedophiles and paedophilic activity, there is no easily accessible or widely accepted multi-disciplinary definition of paedophilia. Commentators have pointed to a general contemporary misunderstanding surrounding the subject of paedophilia, and to the tensions between strong beliefs and facts in both societal and correctional contexts.

We suggest that the current situation — societal, clinical and legal — can be problematic for both offenders and practitioners who are currently charged with, and involved in the risk treatment and/or management of paedophiles.

This article attempts to begin to address these issues by looking at conceptions of paedophilia from a multi-disciplinary viewpoint. We examine understandings from clinical and legal sources, and present this analysis in a historical and cultural context. In drawing these divergent conceptions together, we highlight various contradictions and discrepancies. We suggest that these inconsistencies present significant problems in terms of professional engagement with paedophilia and paedophiles, and as a result illustrate the need to engage in more detailed debate regarding what constitutes ‘the problem’.

Professional responses to contemporary discourses and definitions of paedophilia

"ABSTRACT

This paper will discuss professionals’ contemporary definitions and understandings of paedophilia, based upon empirical qualitative research with a range of professionals working within paedophilia, or in related fields practitioners, academics and members of the media) (N = 28).

The research used semi-structured interviews, interpreted through qualitative (thematic) content analysis. The findings reveal that in general the professionals seem to have similar, but differently nuanced understandings of paedophilia. The professionals believe that the current definition of paedophilia, as a result of a number of factors including disparate professional discourses, has become problematic as it does not reflect the complexity of the issue or the population in question. This disharmony in professional discourse and public discussion has led to the broader societal discourse surrounding paedophilia to become maladaptive and not fit for purpose.

Therefore the professionals believe that the current discourse surrounding paedophilia, and its resulting definition, needs to be readdressed.

Current understandings of paedophilia and the resulting crisis in modern society

"Abstract

Paedophilia has become a major social issue in modern society; however, there remains considerable ambiguity in how society understands and perceives this phenomenon.

This chapter will first examine the current theoretical and research positions surrounding paedophilia in modern society, through examining its aetiology, behaviours, personalities, cognitive distortions, grooming, potential treatments and current, as well as possible policy/legal changes, particularly in the UK.

This will then lead into a discussion of the social construction of paedophilia and the current crisis in modern society, through examining the literature on moral panics and social risks, as well as addressing the impact of the media.

This chapter will conclude by offering some suggestions for how the current ambiguity surrounding paedophilia maybe alleviated, including a need for greater research, an increase in funding, alternative approaches to treatment, a different media approach, possible future policies and a change in public awareness.

The paedophile - sick or criminal?

"Cardinal Napier’s attempt to medicalise paedophilia draws on prevailing therapeutic standards of accountability. The attribution of responsibility and notions of accountability are strongly influenced by prevailing social and cultural norms. Legal concepts like contributory negligence express the widely held view that responsibility for a particular injurious act can be shared.

However the contemporary therapeutic ethos goes way beyond the notion of relative accountability to implicitly question the ethic of responsibility itself. Bad habits, antisocial and destructive behaviour are frequently portrayed as the outcome of dysfunctional parenting, family violence or of people’s genes."
