POLICE WELFARE CALL

"The police claim that because some random stranger (not my doctor or a relative) called them and claimed that I had threatened to commit suicide on my twitter feed… and despite the fact that this was not supported by any actual evidence …this entitled them to ignore all established protocol and remove my rights as a valid and credible person in my own right… and treat me like I was a dangerous mental health patient.

Me and my family are currently grieving a suicide, but we are not suicidal… nor would I ever consider leaving my family in such a way… nor would I post about such a subject in that way on twitter! Have you lost your senses? What right do you have to assume I have lost mine.

The police had no rights to undermine my mental health credibility in such an abusive appallingly prejudice and aggressive way (certainly not on an unsupported hoax call) they had no right to force me to ‘bring in’ two adults to speak for me … what if I could not find two adults to speak for me that night?"

Children being raised in 'captivity' due to health and safety paranoia

"Children are being raised in captivity because of growing “paranoia” about health and safety, a former Government adviser has warned."

"The comments – in a speech to the North of England Education Conference in Sheffield – come amid fears that growing exposure on technology and irrational fear over “stranger danger” is stopping children enjoying outdoor play."

"But Prof Byron, a child psychologist and author, who carried out a Government review into the effect of video games and the internet on young people, said parental concerns had reached “insane” levels"

"Today's children are "hugely, hugely restricted", she told delegates."

"She said: “There are no more predators on the streets, no more paedophiles, then when I was growing up in the 1970s.”"

Second Thoughts and a New Approach

"I’d like to go back to some remarks I made in a previous entry, “Child Safety Zombies,” on August 2, 2012.

The tone I used to write about Marc Klaas was not acceptable. Mr. Klaas and others, such as John Walsh, are people who have suffered terrible, unthinkable losses. Some of the policies they have pursued to achieve a safer society are not what I believe are the most effective, however, I have no doubt they are driven by love and compassion above all else and to even imply otherwise is frankly wrong. I apologize for these remarks and similar ones that I might have made in the past.

This raises the broader issue of how we should interact with those who have different views than the reform community – specifically the anonymous bloggers and posters – many of whom spew hate toward people required to register and at times their loved ones.

I myself have been the target of many such attacks, even death threats, for speaking out on this very emotional issue. Hate sites have even falsely accused me of being tied to NAMBLA, a common smear painted on all reformers – despite the fact that I and every activist I am working with supports age of consent laws.

I think we need to change our approach.

First, I think we need to stop calling our online opponents “trolls”, “vigilantes” or “zombies”. They are people who are misinformed. If we were to put ourselves in their shoes and actually believed that every person on the registry was a powder keg looking to go off and sexually abuse someone at the first opportunity, many of the policies they advocate would be understandable. (As opposed to the violence that many threaten, which is never acceptable.) We know the truth – that sex offenders have one of the lowest rates of recidivism of all offender groups in the criminal justice system."

More Image Hysteria

Headteacher reports artist mother to police for pictures of her son

""My son's headteacher called the police in 2010 to my son's primary school, after seeing pictures of my son on my website. I had had a performance at the Courtauld Institute and my son's teacher missed it so I gave her a video of myself and my son. My son's class viewed it, I got good feedback from the teacher, and I heard nothing else about it until almost a year later. The headteacher had a look at my video and then started looking at my website. It was never made clear why she started searching on my website; she said she had concerns and had a right to act on them.

She told me that she was alarmed at a picture on my site of him in the bathtub, all typical Sally Man/mother-photography, etc. type work. Actually he had a Halloween mask on, and while there were other photos of him on my site, and you could assume it was him, his face was unidentifiable and she didn't know for sure. After consulting the school governor she rang the police - who said nothing was wrong with the images on my site (ie, no porn) - but they then had an obligation to call social services."

Child photography banned at National Trust for Scotland site

""I recently visited J.M. Barrie’s birthplace home in Kirriemuir, Angus, a building run by the National Trust for Scotland, holding a camera. I was expressly told, as I purchased tickets, that I must not use my camera to photograph children. Mention was made of both child protection and data protection legislation, and also of the possibility of tracing women in refuges via possible posting on social networking sites."

Unleash our kids

"Crime is at a 40-year low, but nervous parents are limiting their kids' freedom to roam -- and it hurts urban life

When Lenore Skenazy was growing up in Wilmette, Ill., in the 1960s, she routinely walked the four blocks between her home and her kindergarten all by herself. She knew to stay safe near traffic and not go anywhere with a stranger. And to help her cross the street was a friendly crossing guard — a sixth-grader named Joey. “For the record, I ended up marrying him,” she laughs.

That a kindergartner was allowed to toddle four blocks without adult supervision seems extraordinary now, even though cities are at least as safe for children today as they were then. Crime is at a 40-year low. The percentage of kids fatally hit by cars has been dropping for decades. And the child abductors that leer from every corner are tabloid fantasy — only about 100 kids, out of tens of millions, are kidnapped in public by a stranger each year."

Climate of fear surrounds children’s sports coaches

"Regulations designed to protect children who take part in sports from sex abuse have created a climate of fear for coaches, according to new research. London 2012 Olympics: Climate of fear surrounds children’s sports coaches The researchers, who interviewed around 100 coaches from a range of sports, found that swimming was regarded as the riskiest sport of all, with anyone, particularly older men, who wanted to coach being viewed with suspicion.

Many coaches are so fearful of being accused of abuse that sports training has become a strict 'no touch’ zone, even in potentially dangerous situations, it is claimed.

Researchers at Manchester Metropolitan University found that the prioritisation of child protection may jeopardise attempts to widen participation in sport.

The study is the first to look at the issue of 'touching’ within sport in the UK. It found that some coaches have given up working with children for fear of any repercussions or false accusations."

Teacher at girls’ school banned from teaching for 'obsession with sex’

"A teacher at an all girls’ school has been banned from classrooms after being accused of being “obsessed with sex”.

Dr Michael Davis, a fellow of the Royal Historical Society, has now been banned from teaching in England

As an expert in medieval history and the author of a series of historical novels, he seemed like an obvious candidate for a teaching role at a girls’ school.

And when Dr Michael Davis began work, he was praised by colleagues for the rigour and discipline in his classroom.

But for pupils, there was a problem – his lessons seemed more like Horrible Histories, dwelling on the seedier side of life in bygone days.

Children said his lessons were peppered with adult terms and slang, with references to “sex”, “breasts” and “rape”. He told one class that Henry VIII’s split with Rome was hastened because Anne Boleyn had “a bun in the oven”.

A class of 11 and 12 year olds were told that in the Middle Ages they would already have been married off, to men of his age. Girls aged 14 and 15 were taught to write essays using the mnemonic “SEX” – S for structure, E for evidence and X for explanation."
