Stinson Hunter style vigilante paedophile-hunting gangs increase - leading figures speak out

"LEADING figures from around the area have spoken out over the rise of vigilante paedophile [sic] hunting groups.

The group Dark Justice has been making headlines recently in Newcastle upon Tyne, by posing as 13-year-old girls to trick men into meeting with them.

By working with the police, they have been able to secure several prosecutions against paedophiles [sic].

The practice is not illegal, though some have questioned its morality while others have warned about the risks to the people involved and of jeopardising prosecutions."

Exclusive Dr Christian: ‘Stinson Hunter’s methods are ludicrous- paedophiles need help’

"Dr Christian tells Closer why society should stop the witch-hunt on paedophiles.

“I watched The Paedophile Hunter with absolute horror.

As a doctor I’ve had patients who have admitted to me that they are sexually attracted to children, and these are precisely the scare monger tactics that will push them underground.

Stinson Hunter may think he’s exposing potential sex offenders before they commit a crime, but in actual fact he’s just creating an environment of fear that will end in disaster.

No one chooses to be attracted to children, I believe it’s a preference you’re born with.

I’ve had patients come to me, confessing: ‘I’d rather kill myself than follow my desire to touch a child- I want help!’

And I truly believe the majority of paedophiles don’t want to offend.

But society’s witch hunt mentality drives people underground and causes a fear which sits, brews and may well cause the hunted to lash out against a society that hates them.

They need to feel safe and able to ‘come out’- they need to be treated sympathetically.

No one chooses to be attracted to children

Many people will have a problem with the expression ‘coming out’ and will find it offensive that I’m associating attraction to children with homosexuality.

But the way we are treating paedophiles is the way homosexuals were treated as recently as twenty years ago.

Remember that homosexuality was illegal and even listed as a ‘mental illness’ up until 1990 when it was declassified by the World Health Organization.

Does that mean I was mentally unwell until then and suddenly became healthy? Of course not.

Very often mental illness is a construct of the society in which we live.

The UK legal age of sexual consent is 16, but in some countries girls are getting married aged 12.

I’m not saying that is right or wrong, but we have to remember that different societies have very varying perceptions of what is acceptable.

Too often, people associate the word paedophilia with sex offender, but the two words should not go hand in hand.

Paedophilia is not necessarily a mental health disorder- it’s an attraction people are born with. An attraction, on a widely variable spectrum of sexuality and sexual orientation.

You cannot prevent instinct or biology- it’s stronger than good will or the law, and it’s naïve, even negligent, to think people will curb their desires because they are branded a crime.

Therefore I believe we need to create a phone help line for paedophiles. We need to create a paedophile help programme, which is governed by counsellers and doctors.

They need to be offered therapy before they offend, and offenders need to be offered help during their prison sentence.

An attraction to children cannot be cured, the same way an attraction to the same sex cannot be changed.

However we can offer paedophiles counselling and ‘chemical castration’, sometimes given to prison inmates to help reduce sexual desire. This is a medical treatment many of my patients have requested, but has been denied to them.

Paedophilia needs to be treated before it’s acted upon- not after."

Stigmatization of people with pedophilia: two comparative surveys.

Abstract

"Despite productive research on stigma and its impact on people's lives in the past 20 years, stigmatization of people with pedophilia has received little attention.

We conducted two surveys estimating public stigma and determining predictors of social distance from this group. In both studies, pedophilia was defined as a "dominant sexual interest in children."

The survey was comprised of items measuring agreement with stereotypes, emotions, and social distance (among others).

Responses were compared with identical items referring to either people who abuse alcohol (Study 1), sexual sadists or people with antisocial tendencies (Study 2). Study 1 was conducted in two German cities (N = 854) and Study 2 sampled 201 English-speaking online participants.

Both studies revealed that nearly all reactions to people with pedophilia were more negative than those to the other groups, including social distance. Fourteen percent (Study 1) and 28 % (Study 2) of the participants agreed that people with pedophilia should better be dead, even if they never had committed criminal acts.

The strongest predictors of social distance towards people with pedophilia were affective reactions to this group (anger and, inversely, associated, pity) and the political attitude of right-wing authoritarianism (Study 1).

Results strongly indicate that people with pedophilia are a stigmatized group who risk being the target of fierce discrimination.

We discuss this particular form of stigmatization with respect to social isolation of persons with pedophilia and indirect negative consequences for child abuse prevention."

"Address by Norman Lamb to care conference follows outcry over marketing online of ‘psycho’ and ‘schizo’ joke costumes.

"Norman Lamb, the Liberal Democrat care and support minister, will give a speech urging retailers not to “demonise” people with mental health problems by selling trick-or-treat and party outfits that mock psychiatric patients.

His address to the National Child and Adult Services (NCAS) conference in Manchester comes after several joke outfits depicting dangerously violent mental patients in chains and wearing masks made headlines after going on sale online.

Lamb is due to tell the conference: “For me it is horrendous that, this Halloween, a young person experiencing a mental health crisis could easily come across someone in a ‘psycho ward’ or ‘schizo patient’ costume – complete with handcuffs and ripped restraints – as much as they could see someone in a Dracula costume.

“This Halloween culture is dangerous. It conditions all of us to fear mental illness, to see people as ‘psychos’, or ‘schizos’, [or 'paedos'], or ‘freaks’.

It makes us believe that mental illness is something otherworldly. We have to tackle this damaging stigma which prevents young people from seeking help when they need it, or talking about any problems they might be having.

“Everyone should be able to enjoy Halloween but I urge all retailers to behave more responsibly – don’t demonise mental illness.”"
