'Paedophile' slur and violent attack on innocent man

"Cambridge Crown Court

Two drunk men launched an “unforgivable” attack on a man in his 60s because they wrongly believed he was a paedophile.

Toby Cleaver-Wright, 22, and Bradley Pinchion, 21, followed their victim as he left the White Lion pub in Sawston and threw punches, kicks and accusations at him in a dark alley on October 22 last year.

Cleaver-Wright, who works for the Marshall Group and is a former pupil at Comberton Village College, was given a suspended jail term after the judge accepted he was not the main player in the attack, which he said was “wholly out of character” for him.

Pinchion, of Church Lane, Whittlesford, did not turn up to the hearing and a warrant was issued for his arrest so that he can be sentenced."

"AC was brutally murdered more than four years ago

A convicted paedophile [sic] hacked to death in a suspected vigilante attack was entertaining girls in his caravan the evening before, an inquest heard.

AC, 52, was found surrounded by a pool of blood, his genatalia mutilated, in his caravan parked in Riverside Road, Earlsfield, on December 9, 2008.

Westminster Coroner's Court heard police have been unable to find his killers, despite interviewing 800 people and offering a reward of £20,000.

Coroner Dr Shirley Radcliffe ruled today he was unlawfully killed, with police investigations still on going to find the murderer.

Following the gruesome attack it emerged Mr C was convicted of having unlawful sex with a 15-year-old girl in 2001."

Extra measures for child protection

Teen admits killing convicted sex abuser

"German authorities are trying to figure out whether a teenager who admitted stabbing a 55-year-old convicted sex offender to death may have been one of his victims [so what?].

The 15-year-old boy was arrested shortly after the man, named only as Harry H., was found stabbed to death outside his flat in the Spandau district of Berlin on Thursday afternoon. Initial reports suggest he was stabbed at least three times.

Investigators say the two knew each other, and that their work was focussing on whether the teenager had been sexually abused by the man.

The boy has reportedly admitted killing the man, and is being held in youth detention."

Smallfield dad cleared of all sex charges tells of his relief

"A FATHER-OF-THREE found not guilty of indecently assaulting a young boy has spoken about the "living nightmare" he faced as neighbours suspected him of being a paedophile.

A jury took barely half an hour to acquit Joseph Maslen, 39, who was accused of a string of sex offences dating back to the mid 1980s.

Having been cleared of any wrongdoing at Lewes Crown Court last week, Mr Maslen told the Courier & Observer of the hell he has been through.

"I've lost two-and-a-half years of my life," he said.

"I sat there in court numb, and bewildered it had got so far on the word of another person.

"But my mum said 'look at the jury from day dot. Look them in the eye and they will be able to tell if you are telling the truth'. And I did, and they could."

While the charges have hung over him Mr Maslen, from Wheelers Lane, Smallfield, said he had been left with "no motivation to do anything".

He said: "I couldn't sleep. It's been a kind of mental torture. I've been in a prison in my own home. It's been a living nightmare.

"I went and told my dad the day I was charged. My mum hasn't enjoyed the best of health so I kept it from her as long as I could.

"I told the boys this year, when we knew it was going to go to court."

While his sons didn't doubt his innocence, neighbours weren't so sure.

Mr Maslen said: "This is a small community and bad news travels fast. If you've tripped in the street, by the time you've fallen the bloke down the road knows about it.

"I was quite a sociable person before this happened. I went to the local shop. Now I can go again.""

Tunbridge Wells magician is mistaken for sex offender

"A MAGICIAN from Tunbridge Wells says he fears leaving his home after a case of mistaken identity led to threats and attacks by vandals.

Popular magic man Adam Smith, of Wolesley Road, has faced rumours, threats and vandalism since a fellow magician from the town was convicted of sending sexual texts to a teenage girl.

MISTAKEN IDENTITY: Magician Adam Smith has been threatened and targeted by vandals due to mistaken identity since the RB court story broke. His car has also been damaged

Mr Smith, a father of two who runs a magic shop in High Brooms and has performed for stars including Kate Moss, is worried his family and business will suffer because he is being mistaken for RB.

The 40-year-old said it had been "horrible" to have people question him about the texting incident, adding: "I'm worried about my reputation as a magician. Your reputation is everything – it's your business."

It all started last month when well-known TV magician B, 31, was shamed in the Courier after he admitted sending explicit texts and images to a 15-year-old girl he met during a marathon magic show earlier this year.

Since then Mr Smith has been wrongly accused of being the magician involved in the scandal.

He has had bookings cancelled with no explanation, shops and businesses have removed his business cards and the rumour has spread around his ten-year-old son's school. It all came to a head on Friday, October 12 when his car, which is branded with his details, was targeted by vandals while parked outside a gig in the centre of Tunbridge Wells.

It is estimated the culprits, who gouged the bonnet, doors and panels, caused about £3,000 worth of damage."

Innocent former Huddersfield Giants star JB speaks about the nightmare allegation of child sex offence

"POLICE investigations against a former Huddersfield Giants star arrested on suspicion of a child sex offence have been dropped.

And now ex-South African international JB has spoken of his relief that police ruled there is no evidence to substantiate the allegation.

The Calderdale man was arrested in July and quizzed by police, but was told last Thursday that no further action would be taken.

J, 41, now a rugby league referee, believes changes need to be made to social networks to prevent such incidents escalating.

J said: “I feel elated and relieved, but I’ve hardly slept the last four months.

“In this day and age and with all the Jimmy Savile stuff crimes against a child, especially sex crimes, are the most hated crime in society. It’s understandable, but what if the person is not guilty like I am?

“With the way social networks run, and being named by The Sun, it’s been a difficult time.”"

Pontllanfraith blackmailer jailed after ‘paedophile’ threat

"ONLINE ULTIMATUM: Lewis Jones demanded £4,000 for his silence

A BLACKMAILER posed as a 14-year-old girl and threatened to expose a man he befriended online as a paedophile unless he paid him £4,000.

Lewis Jones sent Facebook messages to BK, in the West Midlands, pretending to be someone called Anna Smith, between May and June last year.

Newport Crown Court heard the messages were of a sexual nature and both parties sent intimate photos.

Jones, 22, of Libanus Fields, Pontllanfraith, sent Mr K message saying: “I am 14 years old and you are clearly trying to have sex with me, you are a paedophile.

“If you pay I won’t out you as a paedophile to friends and the police, which will ruin your life.”

He continued: “I hope you will take the easy way out and not the hard way, which will destroy your life.”"

Sex-offender registry an overreach

"Below is an open letter to Justice Minister Mark Golding.

I write to urge reconsideration of the proposed sex-offender registry in Jamaica. In the words of Yvonne McCalla-Sobers, "In a country as small and retributive as Jamaica, a sex offender registry can be the same as a vigilante directory. And women and children will still be sexually abused if we continue to focus on punishment rather than prevention."

Honourable Minister, as an attorney, I am sure you are aware that such a registry, even if private, violates a central legal tenet, which is that once an individual has paid for a crime, he should no longer continue to face sanctions.

A sex offender registry will expose a released sex offender to potential violations of his right to privacy. In Jamaica's small, close-knit society, which is highly motivated by vigilante justice (as seen from recent incidents surrounding alleged sexual offenders in western Jamaica), it is illogical to assume that the data on the registry will NOT be leaked to citizens. This will have disastrous consequences for alleged offenders AND their families.

I need not remind you of the recent incident in Zion, Trelawny, where an innocent heterosexual man was hacked to death, his home firebombed and his daughter savagely chopped up because a young gay relative (who had, in fact, left the community four months prior) was accused of sodomising and drowning two youngsters. The pathologist's report found no evidence of sodomy; however, this young man and his mother are now on the run for their lives.

The registry would also violate the principle of equality before the law, as there is no registry for even more egregious crimes, such as murder.

Further, if the registry is private, it will serve the same purpose of a police report, and is, therefore, unnecessary. Most employers in sensitive industries, such as childcare, already require police reports, which would capture the sort of information in a sex-offender registry.

Not by strangers

Finally, the registry will be futile, as evidence proves that most sexual offences are committed by close relatives and friends, and not complete strangers moving into the community.

I would, therefore, urge that instead of the Band-Aid approach being pursued in setting up a registry (giving the public a false sense of security that something is being done to address the horrendous cases of sexual abuse in Jamaica), rather serious consideration be given to the following recommendations proposed by Mrs McCalla-Sobers to prevent the sexual abuse of women and children:

1. Identifying the rape 'hot spots' (such as unlit streets and uncleared lots) and putting protective measures in place.

2. Identifying women and children who are vulnerable to rape and putting protective measures in place for them.

3. Studying those convicted of sex crimes, to identify what steps need to be taken to help youth to be socially responsible.

4. Educating parents, teachers, and the general public so they can recognise signs that a child is being sexually molested.

5. Providing help and support for sexually abused children and their families.

6. Educating children, parents, and the general public on sex and sexuality, and on appropriate and inappropriate touches.

7. Providing safe spaces where children and youth can be supervised out of school by caring and responsible adults.

8. Providing resources for trauma and grief counselling for rape survivors: boys and girls, men and women.

9. Implementing laws and international conventions to protect the rights of women and children.

10. Enabling the public to understand their contribution to justice as jurors and witnesses.

11. Ensuring the rights of victims and witnesses are protected before, during, and after trial.

12. Providing the police with the resources they need to enable speedy and effective collection of evidence.

13. Ensuring prosecutors have time and resources to provide the courts with evidence that can lead to conviction.

14. Organising court space, time, and personnel so trials can be prompt.

15. Ensuring that lockups and prisons return males to society rehabilitated rather than enraged and further damaged.

County Durham blackmail threats end in jail

"A BLACKMAILER tried to extort £30,000 from a retired businessman by threatening to expose him as a paedophile.

Jacob Barton was yesterday jailed for three years and two months after a court heard of a concerted campaign that left his victim traumatised.

Barton made numerous phone calls to his victim, repeating the threats and warning he would report him to the police unless he was paid off.

He said he had video evidence and other proof to support his claims and even called at the victim’s County Durham home.

But, Durham Crown Court was told that the ex-businessman had taken advice and alerted the police.

When Barton knocked at the door he was greeted by an undercover police officer and, despite being stopped nearby after leaving, he claimed to be a door-to-door canvasser.

It was only several weeks later, aware he was being sought by police, that Barton handed himself in.

Paul Newcombe, prosecuting, said the extortion attempt was triggered after Barton was approached by a man who claimed his partner had been in a relationship with the businessman 28 years earlier, when she was about 16, or younger.

But Mr Newcombe told the court there was nothing to substantiate the slur and said the victim had led an unblemished life."
