Consent, Compulsion and Sexual Offenders: The Compulsory Treatment of Sex Offenders - But, Not All, It Appears

10/1/14

Funding success for Northumbria Law School

Northumbria Law School wins prestigious seminar funding

"Professor Chris Ashford and senior lecturer, Nicola Wake have been awarded funding from the Modern Law Review to run a seminar on ‘Consent, Compulsion and Sexual Offenders: The Compulsory Treatment of Sex Offenders’ to be held in March 2014.

This is only the second time this award has gone to a new university, the first time also being Northumbria in 2010 for a seminar on Expert Evidence in Criminal Proceedings.

This event will be run jointly by the School’s Centre for Evidence and Criminal Justice Studies and the Gender, Sexuality and Law Research Group. It aims to bring a new dimension to the approach of legal academics and legal practitioners to the “treatment” of sex offenders. It will bring together academics and practitioners for the first time to enable an inter-disciplinary dialogue on this topical area of criminal law and to develop a sustainable international research network.

The Gender, Sexuality and Law Research group was launched in 2013. It draws together established, early career academics and postgraduate students from a range of disciplines across the University aligned with the core theme of gender, sexuality and law. The group acts a point of focus for this growing community of scholars, and organizes a seminar series together with a range of activities to support and develop a community of academic inquiry. In the first six months of operation, the group has successfully attracted funding to explore LGBTQ law student identities, LGBTQ ‘communities’ within law schools (with Bradford University), and to explore conceptions of privacy in the context of mobile ‘dating’ Apps such as the popular Grindr and Scruff products (with Newcastle University).

For more info on the seminar or the work of the Gender, Sexuality and the Law Research Group, contact Chris Ashford"

Is pedophilia a sexual orientation?

"Dr. James Cantor of CAMH has shown pedophilia is like a sexual orientation — a deep attraction that cannot change. Now, pedophiles who have never molested children are seeking social acceptance.

Dr. James Cantor of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health has spent the last decade on research suggesting that pedophilia is a deep-rooted, unchangeable predisposition."

A New ‘Social Glue’ Within Society As Symbolic Victims

29 June – 1 July 201

Child Victims and Celebrity Culture: The Celebration of Pain

"Within celebrity culture perpetrators of crime can attain celebrity status due to their criminality (Penfold-Mounce, 2009).

This achievement of celebrity criminality is only one aspect of celebrated status being achieved through negative connotations with an increasing number of crime victims achieving celebrity due to their victimhood.

It appears that in celebrity culture it is possible to celebrate the pain, both physical and emotional, inflicted on others particularly amongst the young.

This paper seeks to examine the rise of the celebrity child victim and their importance as a new ‘social glue’ within society as symbolic victims. Celebrated child victims demonstrate an innate power to influence public opinion and subsequently impact upon governmental policy.

A range of case studies will be used to illustrate how victims are achieving well-knowness to the extent of attaining celebrity and the consequences of this status.

A primary focus will be taken upon Madeline McCann, Sarah Payne and Soham murder victims Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman all of whom have been celebrated for their victimhood."

The Most Totalitarian Ideas Suddenly Become Acceptable

March 2013

‘If you question the Savile crusade, you're seen as evil’

"Frank Furedi on his new book about Jimmy Savile, and why it's so hard, but so important, to challenge the moral crusade on child abuse.

Frank Furedi, author, sociologist and spiked writer, has written a new book called Moral Crusades in an Age of Mistrust: The Jimmy Savile Scandal. He talked to Tim Black about why he wrote the book, and why he expects it to win him few friends.

Tim Black: What made you write Moral Crusades in an Age of Mistrust?

Frank Furedi: I’ve become concerned about how the issue of children and abuse has become so badly moralised. It is as if any claim is permissible if you invoke children; the most totalitarian ideas suddenly become acceptable. When it comes to children and allegations of abuse, only one interpretation, only one story is permissible. If you treat child abuse as you would any other crime, and apply the same standards of justice, you are condemned as at best cruel and insensitive, and at worst as an accomplice to an act of paedophilia."

Take Every Opportunity To Unmask Its Pretensions And Euphemisms

January 2013

Obituary: Stan Cohen, 1942-2013
 – social worker turned sociologist
who coined the term ‘moral panic’

"You may not have heard of Stan Cohen, who has just died, but you will certainly know something of his ideas, and their continuing relevance. Look at the current hysteria around ‘chavs’, ‘asylum seekers’  and ‘shirkers’ or the way Jimmy Savile has come to represent paedophilia  (even though we know that most child abuse takes place within the family), and we are likely to come up with the term ‘moral panic’."

"One I especially warm to is his encouragement for us ‘to stay in your agency or organization, but don’t let it seduce you. Take every opportunity to unmask its pretensions and euphemisms’"

"And most challenging perhaps, ‘In practice and theory, stay “unfinished”. Don’t be ashamed of working for short-term humanitarian or libertarian goals, but always keep in mind the long-term political prospects. This might mean living with the uncomfortable ambiguity that your most radical work will be outside your day-to-day job’"
