Utah mom takes stand against pornography before Legislature

"SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Legislature took a step toward regulating sexually explicit images, acknowledging that such images may cause long-term harm to unsuspecting viewers.

The Senate Health and Human Services Committee approved a joint resolution on the matter Monday that "recognizes the strong negative impact of gateway pornography on brain development in children, and urges parents and concerned citizens to consider ways to mitigate its effects," according to the proposed legislation.

A Utah mom brought the issue to lawmakers after spending years poring over varous scholarly journal articles and other materials regarding the perceived effects pornography might have on the developing minds of young children."

Father fails in legal bid to ban ‘vulnerable’ daughter, 13, from Facebook

"Facebook has more than one billion profiles from across the world using its social network site

A High Court judge has rejected calls from the father of a troubled 13-year-old to force Facebook to forbid her from accessing her account in a case which highlights the difficulties some parents face in stopping children accessing inappropriate content online.

The father, who cannot be named for legal reasons, wanted judges to force Facebook to take “any steps necessary” in stopping the girl accessing the website after she used it to post a series of sexually suggestive pictures and have “sexualised contact” with older men."

Brampton moves to licence clowns, Santa Clauses & magicians

"Brampton council is moving ahead with plans to licence clowns and other children’s entertainers despite objections from city staff and those working in the industry.

Councillors voted on Wednesday in favour of Coun. Paul Pelleschi’s motion, which would require criminal background checks for clowns, Santa Clauses, magicians and the like. The entertainers would also have to pay a nominal fee."

Pundit rebuked over child porn comment

"Longtime conservative strategist Tom Flanagan apologized [pity] Thursday for comments questioning the harm [sic] of child pornography, but academic, political and media organizations moved swiftly to cut their ties with the controversial commentator.

Responding to a question about 2009 comments he had made on child pornography, the University of Calgary professor and former adviser to Stephen Harper had told a Lethbridge, Alta., audience Wednesday night he had "grave doubts about putting people in jail because of their taste in pictures."

"It is a real issue of personal liberty, to what extent we put people in jail for doing something in which they do not harm another person," Flanagan said in a video posted online."

Academics defend Flanagan's child porn views as public debate

"CALGARY - Some academics are coming to the defence of former Stephen Harper strategist Tom Flanagan.

They say the well-respected political scientist should not have been so widely condemned for his comments on child pornography.

Barry Cooper, a colleague at the University of Calgary, says people need to debate taboo topics.

And he says it's a shame Flanagan has been thrown under the bus by his employers and politicians.

Flanagan was giving a community lecture in Lethbridge when he questioned whether people should be jailed for viewing child porn.

Mark Mercer at Saint Mary's University in Halifax says he doesn't know why people are so upset because Flanagan is allowed to have an opinion."

Why We Should Keep Talking About Child Pornography

"I think we sell ourselves short as a society if we do not talk about this issue, or any morally difficult issue, because of fear or repulsion. We are a democratic society whose morals, values and ethics are based on a fine balance between justice and mercy. Not only are we capable of coming to the table with our emotions in check as we think our way through the ramifications of the penalties that we impose on those who turn to child pornography; we must consider ourselves obligated."

Saskatoon man gets five years in child porn case

"Judge references Tom Flanagan remarks in sentence

Judge Douglas Agnew made the comments in a written judgement released in provincial court.

Agnew sentenced DDS to five years in prison after the 58-year-old trucker pleaded guilty to possessing and sharing child pornography.

This is S's second conviction.

Agnew said that, by "interesting coincidence," a prominent Alberta professor voiced his thoughts on child pornography at the same time court here heard sentencing arguments in S's case.

"Professor Tom Flanagan of the University of Calgary is reported to have said, with respect to the idea of jailing people who view child pornography, "[i]t is a real issue of personal liberty and [sic] to what extent we put people in jail for doing something in which they do not harm another person."

Agnew says people who view and share pornography are helping [sic] "unspeakable horrors" on children [sic].

"The flesh of these children is being torn apart, their blood is being spilt, [!} because Mr. S and his ilk enjoy watching it. [incorrect and hysterical, of course, but, even if  were true ... your point is, Judge Agnew?]""

Three jailed for 'dreadful' attack on man wrongly believed to be a paedophile

"Three jailed for 'dreadful' attack on man wrongly believed to be a paedophile

A vulnerable man was stabbed, stamped on and scalded with boiling water during a booze and drug-fuelled attack by three friends who wrongly believed he was a paedophile, a court heard.

Michael Merritt, 51, was left with five knife wounds, burns to his face, ears and hands and a broken wrist after the “dreadful and prolonged” ordeal at the hands of two women and a man, who were jailed for a total of more than 11 years at Bradford Crown Court yesterday.

Jonathan Sharp, prosecuting, said Mr Merritt, who has mental health problems and a history of alcohol abuse, had been drinking with friend Deborah Hogg, 50, and acquaintances Emma Stott, 42, and Christopher Edwards, 33, at Hogg’s home in St Mary’s Road, Heaton, on July 6 last year."

Children as young as eight exchanging sexual images

"Children as young as eight have been involved in the exchange of indecent images via social media, an investigation has found.

Councils and police have recorded incidents involving communications between a 17-year-old and a 12-year-old and a case in which the perpetrator [sic] was aged only 10.

Eight Scottish forces and 23 council education departments provided what details they could of so-called "sexting" cases, the practice of teenagers sharing indecent pictures by social media, mobiles and text."
