Child [sic] Sex Sting Sees 110 Brits Caught Online

"British paedophiles [sic] are among 1,000 webcam sex tourists [?] caught by a team using a digitally animated 10-year-old Filipino girl [not a girl].

The researchers created a Filipino digital avatar called Sweetie

A team of paedophile hunters [sic] has caught 110 Britons asking a fake Filipino 10-year-old to commit sex acts for money online

The Brits were among a total of 1,000 offenders from 65 countries.

They were identified in a ten-week period by four researchers who carried out a sting by posting details of a fake girl in chat rooms.

The operation was carried out by a team from child protection organisation Terre Des Hommes Netherlands, which created a digital "avatar" of a 10-year-old girl who could interact with the offenders online.

Researchers were able to manipulate the "avatar", which they called Sweetie, to make it look like she was really talking to the offenders on a webcam.

All of the 1,000, once they got talking to Sweetie, asked the fake girl to commit sex acts in exchange for payment.

Terre Des Hommes was able to identify the offenders by getting Sweetie to ask them for their credit card details.

The names were then cross-referenced against the pictures that had been taken of them on webcam and the offenders' profiles on social media."

"The identities of the 1,000 men, including the Brits, have been passed on to Interpol so they can be given to law enforcement organisations in their respective countries."

"An internal document written by Christie's replacement and obtained by the Guardian says Christie "confessed to sexual abuse" and he "admitted to having a single improper sexual relationship with a project beneficiary". Christie was dismissed and the details of the incident were passed on to the paedophile unit at Scotland Yard.

However, Tdh decided not to tell the Ethiopian authorities. Nor did it tell the children or the Ethiopian workers in the village. Instead it said Christie had left for "budgetary reasons".

Paedophile hunting [sic] and ‘Sweetie’: the case for luring potential criminals?

"We need to think harder about how we target perpetrators

The very mention of the word paedophile serves as a warrant for the expression of moral outrage in the most twisted and unrestrained form.

It incites neighbours to turn into a lynch mob that feels empowered to mete out the most barbaric forms of punishment. Last week we heard of the brutal murder of a totally innocent man by members of his community. Bijan Ebrahimi was not merely killed, but in a gesture reminiscent of medieval witch-hunts, his body was burned. Now we hear that a Dutch Charity, Terre des Hommes, has created a computer generated image of a 10 year old girl called Sweetie, as bait to encourage paedophiles to get visit a her ‘chatroom’.

I take a look at the picture of this allegedly 10 year-old Filipina girl and I ask myself ‘who is more sick, the promoters of this initiative or the men they stimulate to enter their fantasy world’? I ask myself, ‘what possesses them to look at the world from the perspective of a child predator’? Others praise this form of vigilante action as a form of heroic behaviour. One journalist praised them on the grounds that ‘more than 20,000 perverts were lured out when an anti-abuse group created a computer-generated ten-year-old Filipina girl called Sweetie to visit chatrooms’."

"Internet sting operations such as this are likely to court injustices that can lead to tragedies. Recently a man committed suicide after a British based group of vigilantes accused him of being a paedophile and grooming a child on the internet. The online group Letzgo Hunting believes that it is providing a public service. Tragically what it does is to feed its own moral confusions."

Sweetie and Terre des Hommes: Is paedophile sting a new form of vigilantism?

"Prof Wilson said the work down by Terre des Hommes illustrated how police forces are still trying to catch up to offenders. ‘They need to realise that they should be doing some of this stuff themselves,’ he said.

Although he praised the work being done by CEOP, he said it was time for Europol to take more of a lead on the issue of online exploitation of children.

He maintained that any evidence gathered in the Dutch charity’s investigation would not hold up in court, as the alleged perpetrator has been entrapped. Another issue is that Sweetie is not a real child.

‘This is vigilantism,’ he said. ‘With all kinds of vigilante activity, you can have a very quick success in drawing attention to a problem area, but that vigilante attention doesn’t bring with it in its wake arrests and charges and convictions. You’ve drawn attention to a problem but potentially done nothing to resolve the problem.’"

Abstract

"A meta-analysis of all seven relevant phallometric studies reveals that 22% of normal men show greater or equal sexual arousal to child stimuli (individuals up to 13 years old) than to adult stimuli.

Combined results of two of these studies reveal male prevalence rates of about 3% for pedophilia (mostly s exually aroused by prepubescents) and about 16% for hebephilia (mostly sexually aroused by pubescents).

Details of these studies are described, and implications of the results for sexual science and society are discussed."

How many men are paedophiles?

"It's very common for regular men to be attracted to 18-year-olds or 20-year-olds. It's not unusual for a typical 16-year-old to be attractive to many men and the younger we go the fewer and fewer men are attracted to that age group," says Cantor.

He thinks that if we say that a paedophile is someone attracted to children aged 14 or less, then he estimates that you could reach the 2% figure.

"If we use a very strict definition and say paedophilia refers only to the attraction to pre-pubescent children [then it] is probably much lower than 1%," he says.

The term is often applied to a person who sexually abuses someone below the age of 16, but given that in some countries - and even some US states - you can marry below the age of 16 this definition would clearly not be universally accepted.

There is consensus on the clinical definition. Michael Seto and his colleagues agree that a paedophile is someone who has a sexual interest in pre-pubescent children, so typically those under the ages of 11 or 12.

But whether the prevalence using this definition is 0.5%, as James Cantor says or 1%, as Michael Seto says, you can be assured than in any large group of people - whether they be politicians, entertainers, or Catholic clergy - you are likely to find some paedophiles."

Adaptive value of (some) paedophilic attraction?

"Sorry in advance if this post offends anyone but I just want to look at the issue objectively. Paedophilic attraction is seen in all societies and its existence requires an explanation.

Paedophilic attraction is normally considered abnormal and maladaptive. The conventional argument runs something like "Girls under age X are infertile and incapable of reproducing. Therefore, any sexual attraction to girls under age X has no biological function and must be the result of brain abnormality, etc". The big problem with this argument is that it only considers a girl's CURRENT fertility but what would have mattered most to a man in ancestral times was a girl's FUTURE fertility.

In all societies most reproduction happens within marriages and long term relationships and we can presume it was the same for ancestral humans. Men must therefore have evolved to choose females on the basis of their ability to give them a supply of offspring over the long term. The females capable of giving men the most offspring would have been those who are at or just prior the beginning of their reproductive lifespan i.e. teenage girls. The overwhelming popularity of teenage girls in the sex industries confirms this prediction.

Girls before puberty wouldn't have been the best wife material since a man would have to wait some years before they could start providing him offspring, during which either partner may die. Reproduction at a later age (for the man) also contributes less to the future population.

Although girls who haven't reached puberty wouldn't have been ideal wives they would still have been better than older females who have already used up some of their fertile years. A 30 year old woman, for example, would have been half way through her reproductive lifespan, whereas an 8 year old would still have had all of her fertile years ahead of her. Even if the "reproductive penalty" of waiting for the 8 year old to reach reproductive age reduced her expected reproductive contribution by 50% (which is a big over-estimate) she would still have given a man just as many offspring as a 30 year old wife. It would have made more biological sense for prehistoric men to chase after 8 year olds than 30 year olds.

Having some sexual attraction to girls before puberty would have been adaptive because it would have motivated men to acquire them as wives. It doesn't matter that having sex with them wouldn't have got them pregnant. As long as any sexual activity they did together didn't reduce a man's reproductive success there would have been no need for evolution to select these behaviours out. Forcible intercourse that injured a girl and compromised her ability to bear offspring would have clearly reduced a man's reproductive success and would have been strongly selected against. Minor sexual acts like kissing and touching wouldn't done any damage to a girl's reproductive ability and so there would have been no reason for evolution to select them out.

It's likely that all men have some paedophilic interest as it would have been adaptive in prehistoric societies. The men that identify as paedophiles probably just have more interest than normal, maybe due to random variations in brain wiring in the population.

Edit:

Instead of asking:

“What would have been the adaptive value in men mating with females before puberty?”

What should be asked is:

“What would have been the adaptive value in men being attracted to females before puberty?”

Then the answer’s simple. Girls before puberty have a high future fertility and being attracted to them would have motivated men to acquire them as wives."

Characteristics of Internet Sex Offenders: Theory, Updated Research, and Future Directions

Symposium Chair: Ian A. Elliott, Ph.D.

"Over the past two decades there has been a concerted effort to improve our understanding of individuals who use the internet to commit sexual offences. This effort has combined theoretical understanding of the phenomenon with empirical research to examine and test our assumptions about this population. Although there have been considerable advances in recent years, developing our understanding of internet sex offenders continues to be muddied by the inherent difficulties in defining the population and delineating between internet offending behaviors, with many questions remaining unanswered.

For example, much of the prior research is based on an assumption that traditional sex offender theory and its constituent concepts can be applied to the internet offender population. Is there an adequate rationale for this? The issue of offence cross-over continues to be problematic. Many studies have combined individuals who have committed both child pornography and contact offences with those who have solely committed child pornography offences. But are mixed offenders different from those who engage in one type of offending behaviour exclusively? Also, much of the research in this area has focused on those who access child pornography online, whereas those who use the internet to communicate directly with children have received less attention. Are those who solicit minors for cybersex’/sexualized communication over the internet different than child pornography offenders?

This symposium aims to bring together a mix of research and theory from Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States in order to address some of these questions. In the first presentation, Ian Elliott will examine the applicability of current sex offender theory to the internet sex offender population and highlight outstanding questions. In the second, Kelly Babchishin will present findings from an updated meta-analysis comparing traditional contact sex offenders to different types of online sex offenders. In the third presentation, Juliane Kloess will report findings from a qualitative study of online sexual solicitation offences committed against children, an understudied group."

Applying Sexual Offence Theory to Online Offenders

Ian A. Elliott, Ph.D. Pennsylvania State University

"This presentation summarizes the conclusions of a recent re-examination of the literature on online sex offenders and the extent to which online sex offender behaviour can be explained by contemporary sex offender theory. Ward and Beech (2006) described the attributes of a good theory. This presentation describes three broad categories of attributes that we can use to assess effective applicability to the online population.

Firstly, it will discuss predictive accuracy, empirical adequacy, scope, and explanatory depth - can existing sex offender theory account for existing findings, the range of phenomena requiring explanation, and deep underlying causes and processes, in the internet offender population? Has the initial, and still pervasive, view that internet offenders ought to be similar to child molesters made the successful application of sex offender theory a self-fulfilling prophecy? Secondly, it will discuss internal coherence - are there contradictions or logical gaps in sex offender theory when applied to internet offenders? For example, how do we account for the contradiction of an offender presenting with conflicting treatment needs online (e.g., social isolation) and offline (i.e., pedophile networking).

Finally, it will discuss fertility and heuristic value - do the theories lead to new predictions or open up new avenues of inquiry both for research and intervention? Do we know enough about adult pornography use in the internet offender population? What about offenders whose offences overlap the online and offline world? Where do we intervene, online or offline?"

The Characteristics of Internet Sex Offenders: An Updated Meta-Analysis

Kelly M. Babchishin, M.A. R. Karl Hanson, Ph.D. Public Safety Canada

"This presentation will review the findings of an updated meta-analysis of internet sex offenders. The meta-analysis, based on approximately 30 unique samples, compared the characteristics of child pornography-only offenders, offline-only offenders, mixed offenders (i.e., both online and offline sexual offences), and solicitation offenders. The findings highlight that these groups are not homogeneous; motivation and opportunity matters. Offenders who commit contact sex offences have greater access to children compared to those who do not commit hands-on offences. In contrast, internet sex offenders tend to have greater access to the internet compared to contact sex offenders. Compared to traditional sex offenders, online offenders are more likely to have deviant sexual interests; however, online-only offenders are more likely to have psychological barriers that prevent them from acting directly on these interests (e.g., lower victim access, lower antisociality, greater victim empathy). There were fewer studies on solicitation offenders and most studies sampled contact-driven solicitation offenders. Additional studies on solicitation offenders, especially fantasy-driven solicitation offenders, are needed. In short, this meta-analysis found that some online offenders resemble traditional sex offenders in terms of psychology and sexual activities; others appear to be specialists, with sexual offending behaviours limited to the internet."

Solicitation Offenders: Behavior and Motivation in Interactions with Victims via Internet Communications

Juliane A. Kloess, B.Sc., M.Sc. Anthony R. Beech, D.Phil, FBPsS University of Birmingham, Birmingham, U.K. Leigh Harkins, Ph.D. University of Ontario: Institute of Technology

"Recent research on internet sexual offending has typically focused on child pornography and often neglects to consider offence-specific processes, such as sexual grooming. This presentation will report on the process of sexual grooming as part of sexually exploitative interactions between solicitation offenders and their victims on the internet. Transcripts of chat logs for a number of cases and associated police reports were examined, and analyzed using qualitative thematic analysis. Findings will be presented according to offenders’ diverse motivations and modus operandi. Two previously-identified subtypes of offenders emerged from the analyses, namely contact-driven versus fantasy-driven. Differences in offence processes were apparent depending on offenders’ motivation, varying between pursuing the goal of arranging a physical meeting for the purpose of sexual activity (i.e., contact-driven) and engaging in online sexual activity without a particular interest to meet offline (i.e., fantasy-driven). Content from the transcripts will be outlined to highlight some of the most prominent strategies employed and behaviours engaged in by offenders. This includes the types of sexual activities performed, as well as sexual topics initiated and developed as part of their interactions with victims.

Finally, implications of findings will be discussed with regard to forensic evidence recovered from offenders’ computers by the police, and how this may inform current understanding of cross-over offences, both in relation to contact offence and other illegal activities online."

Assessment and Treatment of Internet Sex Offenders

Michael C. Seto, Ph.D.

"This presentation will provide an up-to-date overview of research on the assessment and treatment of internet sex offenders with a focus mostly on child pornography offenders but also discuss emerging work on offenders who use internet technologies to communicate with and sexually solicit minors. There is growing evidence that internet offenders differ from typical contact offenders in their risk to reoffend and clinical needs. Implications for treatment and risk management strategies are discussed."

The Psychological Profiles of Internet, Contact, and Mixed Internet/Contact Sex Offenders [sic]

"Abstract

A sample of 526 contact offenders, 459 internet offenders, and 143 mixed contact/internet offenders was compared on a range of self-report psychological measures assessing offense-supportive beliefs, socioaffective functioning, emotional management, and socially desirable responding. A multivariate general linear model found a mixed offender profile that was similar to internet offenders rather than contact offenders. The contact group demonstrated lower victim empathy, a greater level of pro-offending attitudes, an externalized locus of control, more assertiveness, a diminished ability to relate to fictional characters, and greater impulsivity than the internet and mixed offender groups. The mixed offender group demonstrated a higher level of empathic concern than the other two groups. The mixed offender group could also be distinguished from the internet group by increased personal distress and perspective-taking ability. A discriminant function analysis highlighted the key linear factor distinguishing between the groups to be one relating to offense-supportive attitudes and identification with fictional characters. A second factor was related to higher levels of empathic concern and poor self-management. These findings are discussed in the context of the potential pathways between internet and contact sexual offenses."

Understanding online child pornography use: Applying sexual offense theory to internet offenders

"Abstract

This review outlines the links between contemporary etiological and offense-process theories of child sexual abuse and our current knowledge of individuals who commit offenses related to online child pornography. First, we integrate previous behavioral typologies into a four-category internet offender typology. Second, we summarize development of etiological theory and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of these theories in explaining the child pornography offender. Third, we outline the potential situational and ecological factors relating to the online environment that may also be a cause for the development and maintenance of prurient online behavior. Fourth, we review theories of the offense process and apply these to research into the modus operandi of child pornography offenders. Finally, we examine the usefulness of this approach in the assessment of risk and the treatment of online offenders."

Psychological Profiles of Internet Sexual Offenders [sic] Comparisons With Contact Sexual Offenders

"Abstract

A sample of 505 Internet sex offenders and 526 contact sex offenders were compared on a range of psychological measures relating to offense-supportive beliefs, empathic concern, interpersonal functioning, and emotional management. Internet offenders could be successfully discriminated from contact offenders on 7 out of 15 measures. Contact offenders were found to have significantly more victim empathy distortions and cognitive distortions than Internet offenders. Internet offenders were found to have significantly higher identification with fictional characters than contact offenders. Further analysis indicated that an increase in scores on scales of fantasy, underassertiveness, and motor impulsivity were predictive of an Internet offense type. An increase in scores of scales of locus of control, perspective taking, empathic concern, overassertiveness, victim empathy distortions, cognitive distortions, and cognitive impulsivity were found to be predictive of a contact offense type. These findings are discussed in the context of the etiology of sexual offending."

The Internet and child sexual offending: A criminological review

"Abstract

This paper outlines the current literature on what is known about the processes by which individuals utilize the Internet for child sexual abuse. First, three ways in which the Internet is utilized are outlined: (1) by dissemination of sexually abusive images of children for personal and/or commercial reasons; (2) by communication with other individuals with a sexual interest in children: and (3) by maintaining and developing online pedophilic networks. Second, content and availability of abusive images are described, and the difficulties faced by criminal justice agencies in both the definition of abusive images and their prohibition is discussed. Third, the potential for offenders to ‘cross-over’ from online offenses to contact sexual victimization of children is examined and placed within a context of various Internet offender typologies that have been developed. Finally, implications of this body of research for law and public policy are considered."

Vengeance Is Mine, Sayeth The Victim

1 November 2013

Giving vengeance a voice in court

"A criminal trial should be a cool-headed assessment of evidence, not a chance for victims to vent their distress.

It is hard to remember a reform to the UK’s criminal-justice system which was not geared towards giving victims a ‘voice’ or ‘presence’ in the courtroom. This week, yet another victim-centred reform was announced, one which would allow for victim-impact statements to be read out in court by victims or their relatives. Victim’s minister Dominic Green said that the reforms would ‘give victims a real say in proceedings’."

"A victim’s emotions have no place in the criminal court. While we can, as human beings, acknowledge and pay due deference to the hardship of a criminal trial, particularly for the victims of the crimes under consideration, we must keep the central purpose of this ancient social ritual at the forefront of our minds. We cannot allow a victim-centred approach to justice to turn our courtrooms from the hopefully objective and impartial arbiters of the social will, into the organs of state-sanctioned revenge."

You Can Weasel The Words, But You Cannot Change The Reality - Rind All Over Again

APA to correct [sic] manual: Pedophilia is not a ‘sexual orientation’ [the orientated decide that, not you - ask the LGBT community.]

"Pedophilia is not a “sexual orientation,” and erroneous [designed to be so] use of that phrase will be corrected soon in its new manual on mental illnesses [sic], the American Psychiatric Association said Thursday.

The APA’s statement came in response to media inquiries, including from The Washington Times, about an uproar on the Internet that the APA had designated pedophilia as a sexual orientation in its new Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, known as DSM-5 or DSM-V.

About a week ago, a blog called NeonTommy, produced at Annenberg Digital News at the University of Southern California, said the APA had drawn a “very distinct line” between pedophilia and pedophilic disorder in its new manual.

According to the DSM-5, pedophilia [not 'Pedophilic Disorder'] “refers to a sexual orientation or profession of sexual preference devoid of consummation, whereas pedophilic disorder is defined as a compulsion and is used in reference to individuals who act on their sexuality,” NeonTommy wrote.

The item was picked up and circulated on countless other Internet sites. Many bloggers bashed the APA for “mainstreaming” deviance [mmmwwhahaha] and capitulating [reality is just that] to pro-pedophile [sic] groups. Others tied [reconnected] it to gay issues — one wag [?] wrote that it was “time to change the LGBT letterhead to LGBT&P.”

The APA said in its statement that “‘sexual orientation’ [legal term] is not a term used in the diagnostic criteria for pedophilic disorder and its use in the DSM-5 text discussion is an error [sic] and should read ‘sexual interest.’ [reality; and means 'sexual orientation', in reality]”

“In fact, APA considers pedophilic disorder [but, not Paedophilia] a ‘paraphilia,’ not a ‘sexual orientation.’ This error [sic] will be corrected in the electronic version of DSM-5 and the next printing of the manual,” the organization said. The error appeared on page 698, said a spokeswoman.""

Statement of the American Psychological Association Regarding Pedophilia and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5)

"A news release sent Oct. 30 on behalf of the American Family Association mischaracterized the position of the American Psychological Association with respect to pedophilia. The American Psychological Association does not classify mental disorders or publish the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, as the release incorrectly stated.

The American Psychological Association [science?] maintains that pedophilia is a mental disorder [psychiatry]; that sex between adults and children is always wrong [science?]; and that acting on pedophilic impulses is and should be a criminal act [science?]. The American Psychological Association has worked for many years to prevent child sexual abuse [science?] and will continue to do so."

Tijdschr Psychiatr. 2014;56(3):196-200. [Sexual disorders in the DSM-5].

"BACKGROUND:

In DSM-IV-TR, the subject of 'sexual and gender identity disorders' was dealt with in one chapter; in DSM-5, however, the subject is divided into three chapters, namely sexual dysfunctions , gender dysphoria, and paraphilic disorders. AIM: To discuss the above-mentioned changes.

METHOD:

The one-chapter version in DSM-IV is compared with the three-chapter contribution in DSM-5 and the differing criteria are tested for their clinical utility.

RESULTS:

There are minor changes in the chapter 'sexual dysfunctions'. The content of the chapters on 'gender dysphoria' and 'paraphilic disorders' differs substantially from the content of the sections on these subjects in DSM-IV. In the section on gender dysphoria the term 'sex' has been replaced by 'gender' and the term 'identity disorder' has been dropped. With regard to paraphilias, a distinction is now made between a paraphilia and a paraphilic disorder. The DSM-5 makes a new distinction between pathology (paraphilic disorder) on the one hand and other unusual or unconventional non-pathological sexual behavior on the other hand. In the DSM-5 the highly relevant clinical concept 'hypersexuality' has still not been incorporated as a separate category.

CONCLUSION:

In the DSM-5 many parts of the chapters on sexual disorders have been substantially revised."
