"The interweaving of the narrative of terrorism with that of paedophilia is driven by a tendency to attach campaigns and causes to the cause of child protection. "Even somewhat overbroad legislation against “how to” manuals ought not to impact Heretic TOC legally, as this blog definitely does not incite law-breaking. Indirectly, though, it would have a very chilling effect. What worries me far more is the potential for yet another measure, because they never stop coming, do they? And what would it look like, this further laceration in our slow death by a thousand cuts? Now that we are to be firmly yoked together with terrorism it’s obvious, isn’t it?
Glorifying terrorism was made illegal by the Terrorism Act 2006. So logically the next step would be to ban the glorification of paedophilia – a “crime” that could well be framed to include saying anything whatever in its favour. This could spell trouble for Heretic TOC, and possibly for any advocacy aimed at lowering the age of consent, even by only a year. Now, that would really be a scary prospect for democracy."

How I feel about the abuser
"I got followed on Twitter by a registered sex offender over the weekend, and when I found out, I was just like 'meh'.
"Yeah, I was just like that.
I know I was supposed to get all angry and upset about it, and demand that Twitter ban his account (which I hope they do); I know it was designed to ruin my day and my mood, but it didn't. I think it's 'cause I can see it all for what it really is. And it got me thinking about how I feel about my father today.
The thing is, I strongly believe in the 'spiritual' maxim: 'happy people don't do bad things.' This makes perfect sense to me. My ugliest behaviour has always come from a place of pain, and when I'm happy, I want others to share in my happiness too. The world looks so different when I'm happy, from when I'm sad. And long story short, abusers ain't happy.
Ok let me elaborate a little. I don't think you can be happy whilst simultaneously destroying other people's happiness. At best, you'll be avoiding your own pain i.e. if you screw over your rival to get ahead in the big game of life, sure, there will be the absence of pain, because for a short time you won't feel inferior to them, you can experience some peace for a short while... I'm not convinced that it's happiness, though.
In life, we are all suffering, and the way we treat other people reflects the extent of our suffering. Now this guy on Twitter has been galavanting around the cyber space pretending that he's oh so nonchalant about everyone's unbridled hatred towards him, but I don't buy it. Even if in his own mind, as a lot of child abusers do, he thinks he's somehow 'right' about his previous actions, feeling ostracised by society has gotta suck. You can't just shake that off. You think he doesn't know, deep down, that he's an idiot? He knows. And if he don't consciously know, well, the signs of subconscious knowing are there for all to see: every Tweet oozing with frustration at the world, so much time and energy put into trying to score petty points against others - it's a sad life. It's one I almost pity.
Actually, I do pity him. There, I said it. I pity him and anyone else who's ever fallen so low that they've abused a child/delighted in the occurrence of their abuse, and then gone on to try and justify it. I know that the initial, understandable, relatable, damn well straight response to an abuser is utter contempt, and that's how it ought to be. But me, I'm tired of giving 'em enough airtime, it just goes round and round, some folks are incapable of reason because if they accepted reason then they would also have to face what they are. Nope, too painful. But you can be sure that no matter what tomfoolery he or they come out with next, they are suffering immensely. Possibly even more than you or I. Well, definitely more than me, I'm having a hoot.
You see, I might have been a victim of the abuser's messed up beliefs, and it very much had a negative impact on my life to have to deal with it all, but I'm out of it now. I get to go on and do normal things like build friendships and follow interests and, oh yeah, be accepted by society. It's done. For me, it's over. But for Bill the pain is unending. It'll never be over for the abuser, particularly not when they refuse to admit remorse - or fail to feel it altogether.
I used to spend a lot of time agonising over whether Dad really acknowledged what he'd done, deep down in the recesses of his - chest area. It was so important to me that he was capable of remorse, and when no evidence of it showed up, I chose to believe in it anyway, a bit like God. I told myself that, deep down, he knew what he'd done, he was just too cowardly to admit it. Now I realise that he probably genuinely doesn't think he's done anything wrong. And in a way, that's even more dire for him. He is actually incapable of remorse. What a sorry, pitiful, degenerate kind of existence that must be.
I think survivors often envision their abusers as 'winning' somehow, as 'getting away with it', as if they get to walk off into the sunset laughing. I don't think this is accurate. Of course, if you've ever had to endure contact with your abuser after disclosure, then they will try to enforce that image to cause you pain in order to try and relieve some of their own. It becomes an adversarial battle about winning and losing and even point scoring. But what we don't realise is, we win by default because we don't abuse kids!!! There's nothing to prove, nothing to fight for, nothing to analyse. To abuse a child in all their innocence, you gotta be pretty messed up. You're already so, so, so lost by the time you start abusing them. Even if you're rich and reputable, in your head you must be suffering immensely. And basically, serves you right son.
Karma doesn't have to be a linear narrative of 'do this bad thing, THEN a bad thing will happen to you' - rather, it's a simultaneous transaction: 'for you to even DO that bad thing, you must already be in such pain.'
And so, your abuser can never 'win'. They're not putting their feet up after a hard day's molesting, to listen to some Sinatra and feel good about themselves. That doesn't happen. Rather, they will derive whatever cruel semblence of actual happiness that they can, desperate, like a starving rat nibbling through the trash. It's not a dignified life. And it's simply your bad luck that you came into contact with such a dysfunctional individual when you were young and vulnerable. It's nothing you did. You didn't make them that way.
Nowadays I feel more or less indifferent to the abuser because I'm too busy focusing on me. Sure, if I bother to really think about those memories, of course I'll get upset and angry and want to shoot him. But that's exactly it... why bother? I don't define myself by what happened to me. I partially define myself by what I'm doing about it. And you can't say I'm repressed, because I've done all the letter-writing and contemplating and pillow-punching so that the anger I feel doesn't show up in my day-to-day life. There's only so many times you can keep squeezing the sponge of your past to get all the pain out; after that, it's just not interesting anymore. For the most part you can leave it where it is and focus on the here and now.
Never believe it when an abuser or other cray-cray tries to make out like they're laughing at you, mocking you, getting the better of you, and goin' home for that Sinatra. It ain't happening. It's an illusion designed to hurt you 'cause they still haven't learned that you can't be happy whilst hurting another individual; though you can be entertained, and it's a distraction from the inner void of self-loathing that they all experience without exception. That's why they're doing it. They're 'thriving' on the fuss, the controversy, the supposed power trip; but remember, you, the survivor, won and win and keep on winning by default. Why?
Because you don't abuse kids! There can be no greater slam-dunk than that. Go live your life and give 'em the two-finger salute, it's the best way of exposing how powerless they really are."

Changing the meaning of the abuse
"I wrote in my last post about the sex offender who followed me on Twitter; well, on his site, he's got a reading list of things what conveniently make his previous actions sound okay. Yeah, I know. From there I discovered that there are some authors who go so far as to say that the pain from sexual abuse specifically is a myth and it isn't the abuse itself which damages us, but our narrative of it - the way society deals with it, and paints it, and makes it out to be this big bad thing which it's not.
Well, to that I say an almighty fuck off. How can anyone say that sexual abuse isn't a damaging experience? [inconsistent evidence] Of course it is. But. But. The general principle of 'things have no meaning but for the meaning you give it' applies to a sexually abusive past as much as it does anything else. As a kid you had no choice in what happened or how you perceived it; but as an adult, the power is in our hands. We have the power of decision at our disposal, any second that we wanna use it.
One day I just decided that I wanted to take responsibility for who I was gonna be from now on, and re-framed the abuse accordingly. I'll never say it wasn't a big deal. It was huge. But it is done now. Sometimes there are after-effects and I totally anticipate that and will deal with them as and when they occur.
But I'm not gonna let that dirty old man (read: terribly tormented, suffering sould, as discussed is previous post) [well really !!!] ruin my life and that's the bottom line. [you fabricated the construct]."

Trends of indecent images of children and child sexual offences between 2005/2006 and 2012/2013 within the United Kingdom

"Little is known about the trends of indecent images of children (IIOC) offences, as UK criminal justice figures are unavailable within official crime data.
This study aims to explore the rates of conviction and the relationship between IIOC offences and child sexual abuse offences from 2005/2006 to 2012/2013.
The results indicated a continuing increase in offences of take, permit, distribute IIOC, rape of a child under 13, sexual activity of child under 16 and abuse of children through prostitution or pornography.
Six out of a possible 17 correlations were significant, with the strongest correlation found between take, make, distribute IIOC and rape of a female under 13.
Explanations for the findings are discussed and the utility of comprehensive prevalence figures for different stakeholders involved in addressing this crime issue."
"Conclusions
The results of this paper found that IIOC offences have been increasing between 2005/2006 and 2012/2013 for the IIOC offence of take, make, distribute, but not for possession of IIOC. In addition, there was a continued increase for child sexual offences of rape of a child under 13, all child sexual activity and abuse of a child through prostitution or pornography, with other child sexual offences indicating a fluctuating pattern across the 8-year time period.
When exploring the relationship between IIOC offences and child sexual abuse, significant positive relationships were found for the offence of take, make and distribute IIOC with child sexual abuse offences of rape of a child under 13 (for both males and females), all child sexual activity, particularly sexual activity with a child under 16, and abuse of a child through prostitution or pornography. All other comparisons were non-significant.
Potential explanations for these finding could be attributed in two key ways: first, due to the increased awareness and reporting of IIOC and child sexual abuse offences, along with increased success of child protection and law enforcement agencies. The development of specialist collaborative agencies such as Child Exploitation Online Centre, Virtual Global Task Force and most recently the European Cybercrime Centre have no doubt contributed to public awareness and increased detection of these offenders (CEOP, 2012).
Alternatively, these findings could be due to an increase in people actually engaging in these particular offences. Although a causal relationship cannot be inferred, whilst IIOC offences of take, make and distribute IIOC offences have increased, so have certain child sexual abuse offences. Further work is required to understand this relationship and whether the increase in IIOC has resulted in more child sexual abuse offences, or vice versa. These results are informative to law enforcement agencies and key stakeholders involved in criminal justice and child protection."

The results indicated a continuing increase in offences of take, permit, distribute IIOC, rape of a child under 13, sexual activity of child under 16 and abuse of children through prostitution or pornography.
Six out of a possible 17 correlations were significant, with the strongest correlation found between take, make, distribute IIOC and rape of a female under 13.
Explanations for the findings are discussed and the utility of comprehensive prevalence figures for different stakeholders involved in addressing this crime issue."

The results of this paper found that IIOC offences have been increasing between 2005/2006 and 2012/2013 for the IIOC offence of take, make, distribute, but not for possession of IIOC. In addition, there was a continued increase for child sexual offences of rape of a child under 13, all child sexual activity and abuse of a child through prostitution or pornography, with other child sexual offences indicating a fluctuating pattern across the 8-year time period.
When exploring the relationship between IIOC offences and child sexual abuse, significant positive relationships were found for the offence of take, make and distribute IIOC with child sexual abuse offences of rape of a child under 13 (for both males and females), all child sexual activity, particularly sexual activity with a child under 16, and abuse of a child through prostitution or pornography. All other comparisons were non-significant.
Potential explanations for these finding could be attributed in two key ways: first, due to the increased awareness and reporting of IIOC and child sexual abuse offences, along with increased success of child protection and law enforcement agencies. The development of specialist collaborative agencies such as Child Exploitation Online Centre, Virtual Global Task Force and most recently the European Cybercrime Centre have no doubt contributed to public awareness and increased detection of these offenders (CEOP, 2012).
Alternatively, these findings could be due to an increase in people actually engaging in these particular offences. Although a causal relationship cannot be inferred, whilst IIOC offences of take, make and distribute IIOC offences have increased, so have certain child sexual abuse offences. Further work is required to understand this relationship and whether the increase in IIOC has resulted in more child sexual abuse offences, or vice versa. These results are informative to law enforcement agencies and key stakeholders involved in criminal justice and child protection."

Not to be confused: Vigilant & Vigilantes
"One area that never ceases to amaze is that of public opinion. As an active voice for people with convictions, I was dumbstruck earlier this week when a tweet appeared on my timeline from a person I have never engaged with previously. The tweet was “informing” me of the online presence of a certain individual. Now, I am not one to encroach on other people’s opinions, and like the proverbial rectum, we all have one and some are larger than others.
My ongoing research, digging into the CJS brings some unpleasant truths. There are crimes against children which are heinous, of this there is no doubt. I am a mother, I am a daughter and despite my fractured family circumstances, my emotional involvement with my family remains. A crime against a child can, and is never, condoned by me. As the modern gift of technology gives the public a voice, I enjoy the vehicles we have in order to voice our opinions, be those good, challenging or diametrically opposed. I am of the mind that being given the opportunity to re-think a matter is not a bad idea. It is a constant learning curve as I look into the dungeons of the CJS.
As the buzz of my phone told me there was a tweet to my account, I do look and I do read. The tweet, although inoffensive, was a polite tweet asking me if I knew who I was conversing with. I responded I was fully aware of whom I was conversing with. I added in the same question back to the person, in asking him if he knew he was conversing with a convicted fraudster. The account stated he didn’t. But that there was a huge difference between fraud and offences of a sexual nature against children. I am impartial on this one. I don’t condone any offence against a child sexual or otherwise. I also do not condone my own offences of fraud.
What then transpired was a clear attempt to rid Twitter of this individual. Every single follower of this account had the same tweet and those who defended their right to make their own choices were then accused of supporting child abuse, covering up child abuse and a string of profane tweets between a group of individuals who have posted the location of the account concerned and listed the individual on a website that screams “vigilantes”. I was told my position “incensed” other people in that they were confused over my stance on those with convictions. Coupled with the profane tweets from “supporters” I made use of the block button fairly quickly. I do not feel harassed nor do I feel victimised by this unsavoury event. But there are some people one just cannot reason with.
Looking back and a further discussion with a friend, who received a separate attack due to her opinions on those who are falsely accused (proven in court by the way) of sexual offences and not necessarily against children, I am amazed not at this vigilante attack but at the insulting manner in which many people’s chosen followers were questioned. Twitter is full of the human race, tweeting regularly on media matters, personal matters and a whole diverse range of subject matter from A-Z. Removing my opinion on vigilantism from the following, I felt one thing and only one thing. The moment a person questions who I follow is the moment a red flag appears and an attempt to control not only me, but many others who rightly so, follow and converse with whom they please. That is our right as human beings, it is not a right for others to question because that choice does not sit with their moral outrage at events.
Challenge my opinions by all means, challenge what I put out there, I am not adverse to discussion and debate about where I stand. But under no circumstances, attempt to clean up my choice over whom I follow and converse with. That smacks of control and an attempt to overrule people’s right of choice. It is unacceptable and punitive behaviour.
There is a world of difference between being vigilant with our online presence, the footprint we leave behind and vigilantism. I respect people’s choice to follow, unfollow or block whom they like and it is not my right to question their decision and nor would I ever want to insult their intelligence with such behaviour. Vigilantism is not an “ism” I am comfortable with and nor will I subscribe. I find the recent events of a cultish nature and we all know what a cult is. It is when there is not enough people to form a minority."

The man, a family member, was jailed in 2013 for nine years after admitting a string of sex offences, including assaulting a child under the age of 13.
He has now formally requested a laptop and a mobile telephone are handed back.
Liberty, which represents the victim's family, said photos of the girl in swimwear and leotards were on the PC.

Dorset Police said they could not delete the family pictures as they were not legally classified as indecent or prohibited.
As a result, the sex offender, who is in his 50s but cannot be named to protect the identity of his victim, will have access to photos of the girl and her family when he is eventually released from jail.
The victim's mother said the family had been "traumatised" by the abuse.
"I am appalled that the man who abused my child can ask the police to hand over our family photos for him to keep for the rest of his life.
"My daughters struggle every day with the devastating consequences of his abuse and this will only make them feel more humiliated and degraded.
"Why should we continue to be traumatised further?"

Liberty argued that the return of the computer and mobile would breach articles three and eight of the European Convention on Human Rights, which protect against inhuman treatment and invasion of privacy, respectively.
In a letter to Dorset Police, Liberty said the prospect of having the photos returned to the abuser was "causing the girls a significant amount of distress" and would be "an enormous violation of their dignity and personal integrity".
The abuse has caused the victim to suffer "enormous psychological harm" and she eats very little, self-harms frequently and is at risk of suicide, Liberty said.
Rosie Brighouse, legal officer at the organisation, said: "We urge the police to protect these victims' dignity.
"It's surely common sense that these vulnerable girls aren't degraded further?"
'Fundamental error'
In a reply, Dorset Police said "present options" were limited as the legislation used to seize the phone and computer required officers to return the property.
The force added: "Furthermore it would be unlawful for police officers to alter the computer and phone's memories by removing the disputed photographs before returning them."
The county's Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), Martin Underhill, said it was not the fault of the police and has set up an e-petition to lobby to change the "fundamental error" in the law.[ah, a loophole, again]

I have come across a case which highlights how victims of sexual abuse are being let down. This case involves a man convicted for sexual abuse. When he was arrested, his laptop was seized by the Police. Now the man is convicted, the case is over, the man is asking for his laptop back.
The laptop contains images of his victims which were not deemed indecent.
The law states that the police have to return the equipment in its original condition.
This is a Dorset case. Question? Should an abuser, be allowed to retain images of his victims? Think of the trauma this causes to the victims? And think of the control and power this gives the abuser? This is not the fault of the police. The legislation is wrong. It is double jeopardy for victim’s photos to be viewed by their abuser – it opens old wounds. Victims need better protection, Government should legislate to stop all victim images being retained by sex offenders."

As Mr Wright's (and other) publications, continue to cause harassment, anxiety and distress, the endangering of lives and the wasting of much police time, it appears clarification and correction are now essential.
Even though ignorance is no defence, to many offences, we are reasonable people.
It should be made clear, Dr Oldfield has served his time (and more) and need not justify his position to anyone; none of us are defined by our past. However, it is obvious, that many people, simply, do not understand what the legal and societal issues are, in such cases.

Well, it really is not that simple, it all depends on what you mean by 'sex offender'. This has been clarified, here.

There are graduations - really? - Excellent.
An unrepentant one. He is the man behind The OSC (Online Sex-Offender Community) the Twitter account and blog I wrote about earlier this week. He served 12 months in jail for downloading over 11,000 indecent images of children including babies in 2002. Though there are nests of pro-abuse activists online, Oldfield is isolated. He runs a “community” in name only. I am told by those who have studied this sick subculture that even some paedophiles consider him an embarrassment.
The pseudo-intellectual Oldfield is a former chemistry teacher. He styles himself as “Dr Nigel Leigh Oldfield” and has popped up several times on national radio and television. His most notable appearance was on Newsnight in 2007 pompously defending his repellent views. Over and over again he made excuses for viewing images of children being abused. He is the ugly agony uncle of the online child sexual abuse community giving tips on avoiding prosecution and defending the indefensible.
After I wrote about Oldfield and his activity on Twitter, he posted information about me on his latest blog. It is not the first he has run on the topic of defending child sex abuse. Previous sites have been shut down by ISPs. However, he currently has at least three up and running. A quick search also throws up numerous forum posts in which Oldfield defends child sexual exploitation. Here’s one example from a Google Group where he expresses disbelief that a convicted sex offender should be stopped from photographing children in the street. On YouTube, he has posted videos where he complains about the persecution of sex offenders, “isolated and poverty-stricken for no good reason”.
Now, on his OSC blog, where he obsessively documents media reports on child sexual abuse, he has posted: my picture, links to my Twitter account, my personal blog, my online CV and screen grabs of my original article shared on Facebook. The post assures me that I am “small fry” but that I can expect a “full and frank response – when we have finished with bigger and more essential issues”. Given his past record, I won’t pause to imagine what those could be. He’s certainly had time to boast about his renewed notoriety on yet another Google Group.
I don’t believe in naming and shaming sex offenders or in vigilante actions. I don't want these individuals pushed underground and out of sight. However, Oldfield names and shames himself. Across the internet, he is active in promoting abuse and attempting to dismiss the harm it causes. I have seen the flabby banal face of evil in a YouTube video. This is who the Prime Minister is trying to combat with his current proposals, the kind of offender so thoroughly certain that it is he who has been wronged. Oldfield thinks he is the one sane man in society. He luxuriates in being written about. Ultimately he is “small fry” himself but deeply unpleasant all the same. I know Nigel intends me to feel threatened but I’m not in his usual demographic.

NW is 41 years old. He took a 13-year-old girl home, allowed her to strip and then engaged in what we must euphemistically refer to as a “sex act” with her. For this and other offences including the possession of eight images of child sexual abuse and eleven sexual images involving horses and dogs, he received an eight-month suspended sentence. But it’s not the lenience of the punishment that has pushed the case into the headlines. It's the comments of the prosecutor and judge.
The Crown Prosecution Service has disavowed the words used by prosecutor Robert Colover at Snaresbrook crown court as “inappropriate”. That’s far too mild, almost offensively so. Colover told the court: “The girl is predatory in all her actions and she is sexually experienced.” His Honour Judge Nigel Peters said in his judgment: “On these facts, the girl was predatory and was egging you on. That is no defence when dealing with children but I am prepared to impose a suspension.” This should go without saying, but in an encounter between an adult man and a girl of 13, the child is not the predator. Regardless of whether she has been sexualised, she is a victim.
I hadn't thought a great deal about this case before I came into contact with a real predator last night. Popping up in the middle of a conversation on Twitter about my bullying piece, someone called “the OSC” revealed himself (or, less likely, herself) to be a fervent defender of paedophiles. Not only does this individual have a Twitter account dedicated to obsessively pushing distorted views about children, he also has a blog. One which has been relentlessly updated since April 2012. I've since discovered that OSC stands for "Online Sex-Offender Community".
I’m flagging up this particular example not because it is rare or unusual but because there is a whole network of these sites and accounts across the web. Those who identify themselves as part of the Online Sex-Offender Community are brazen. Their behaviour justifies the scepticism I and many others have shown towards David Cameron’s internet filtering proposals.
One of the measures put forward the Prime Minister and his dotty surrogate on the issue, Claire Perry, is a pop-up to tell those who seek child abuse images that they risk their jobs, their lives and their families by doing so. The existence of sick individuals such as the OSC, operating in the open on social networks, puts paid to the notion that these people can be shamed. Among the OSC’s messages about the Wilson case there are several references to the girl as a “Lolita”.
The existence of these dangerous individuals is the reason we need to spend more money on traditional policing and investigations. It’s also why charities such as The Lucy Faithful Foundation, which works to prevent abuse and deal with offenders and potential offenders, are so important. The brashness of the OSC is yet more evidence that desperately clutching at technical solutions is not the way to deal with this evil.
