The Paedophile Next Door TX: 25 Nov 2014, Week 4
"With almost every passing week a new child sex abuse scandal breaks. In this sobering and thought-provoking film, historian and acclaimed social documentary maker Steve Humphries sets out to discover why all the elaborate policies and legislation put in place to protect children from sexual abuse have failed. [great - {rolls eyes}]"

Tackling paedophilia head on
"We need bold new approaches to keep kids safe, says Rudolph Herzog
As documentary film-makers, we felt the best way to explore the subject was to meet one of these individuals who are adamant that they would never hurt a child. Against all the odds, Dr Goode managed to trace a man who agreed to speak candidly and openly about living with a potentially dangerous sexual predilection for children as young as five. He claims he has not interfered with a child, and could never imagine doing so. So desperate is he for help that he is prepared to ‘out’ himself in the hope that men like him will be more readily offered support to manage their unwanted desires. He even agreed to show his face on camera.
Much of what we heard in this testimony underscores the necessity not only to have robust punitive measures in place for sex offenders, but to offer treatment for those willing to manage their sexuality.
Making this film has been challenging and many viewers will find the theories, and the self-confessed paedophile’s interview, understandably disconcerting. But Steve and I have both concluded that if we are to protect future generations of children from unspeakable crimes, bold new approaches are needed.
Rudolph Herzog is the director of The Paedophile Next Door, which airs on 25 November at 9pm on Channel 4."

Anger as C4 allows paedophile to say: My name is Eddie, I'm attracted to girls of 4... but NSPCC backs television confession tonight
>The Paedophile Next Door will show Eddie, 39, out himself on camera,
>Tells the programme he has been attracted to young girls since his 20s,
>He insists he has never abused children and does not plan to,
>Calls for help to stop people attracted to children from becoming criminals,
>Programme looks at so-called 'virtuous paedophiles',
>It suggests treatment should be given to those who come forward,
>Programme also features victim Ian McFadyen who was abused at school,
>Says programme may not be popular, but current practices are 'antiquated'."
"The National Association for People Abused in Childhood [NAPAC] said victims would be ‘offended’ by the film and said it should have devoted its airtime and resources to helping people who have been abused as children."
"Peter Saunders, NAPAC’s chief executive, said: ‘This documentary shines the light in the wrong areas. Instead of feeling sorry for poor misunderstood paedophiles, we should be looking at the awful experiences of those who have been abused.’
However, Jon Brown, from the NSPCC, said the film was ‘fantastic’ and that paedophilia is a ‘public health problem’ that needs to be addressed by treating potential offenders as well as punishing them after an offence. He said there are around 250,000 paedophiles in the UK, and predicted many will contact helplines after seeing the film.
Eddie has gone to Europe to be treated by a support group that helps paedophiles control their urges"

Paedophile outs himself on TV show
"They claim research shows that as many as one in 50 men could be sexually attracted to children to some degree and the only resource they have at the moment is other paedophiles, including those who have committed crimes, in online communities for minor attracted persons (MAPs).
Mr McFadyen was abused at Caldicott School near Slough, Buckinghamshire, in the 1970s and became a drug addict and child prostitute.
In the documentary he tells Eddie: "Eighteen years ago I was quite violent, I would probably have attempted to kill you." Speaking in London today, Mr McFadyen admitted that the documentary may not be popular with child sex abuse victims, who feel they do not get enough support themselves. But he said current practices are "antiquated".
He said: "The only reason I agreed to get involved in this was that we can look at this as being potentially another option towards being proactive.
"This is about stopping the abuse actually happening. "It is not a comfortable subject, I don't want to sit with paedophiles, I don't advocate for paedophiles, I feel wholly uncomfortable with them, but ... the damage is done to me and my generation, what I don't want is that to keep occurring because we won't look at new ways and sit down with the offenders before they offend."

Ian McFadyen: Paedophiles need help, not exclusion
"IF anyone should have no time and no sympathy for someone who harbours vile thoughts of abusing a child for sexual kicks, then it’s me."
"To help break the chain, I believe we need a radical rethink of the UK’s approach to child sex offenders with the emphasis on opening up an early route for potential offenders to discuss their thoughts and feelings openly without fear of possible prosecution or being ostracised.
We have to accept that there is a large group of people out there who are attracted to children and who communicate with each other using the internet.
They may not want to offend, but they are in a group which supports each other. They can be infiltrated by sex offenders who argue that it’s OK to feel this way, that it’s natural and the looking at images is not really harming a child.
The programme by award-winning documentary maker Steve Humphries suggests a more sympathetic response so they can be encouraged to seek help before they are tempted to offend.
I believe that chasing paedophiles underground doesn’t work. If someone comes out saying they can’t help how they feel and they need help, then that has to be better than waiting for something awful to happen."

Nov 25, 2014 @ 22:24:23
"Well, what a treacherous shit Humphries turned out to be. I was totally wrong to think Channel 4 was the source of the problem with this programme. Having just watched its first broadcast, I am clear that it was Humphries and his Testimony Films outfit all the way. Can’t even blame it on Rudolph Herzog who is named as co-director: he seems to have had very little input, even at the German end of the story.
There are so many ways in which The Paedophile Next Door was awful it’s hard to know where to begin. Veteran anti-child porn writer Tim Tate was wheeled out to say he had seen “the most appalling footage imaginable” of abuse. I think that sums up my view of the whole programme.
The only bright spot was Eddie, the paedophile who outed himself on camera. That was extremely brave and he spoke well. Unfortunately, his “acceptable face of the paedophile” role was totally overwhelmed by the bile-spilling monstering that dominated Humphries’ narrative and “contributions” from the likes of Sarah Goode plus “the usual suspects” such as the NSPCC."

FCRG Research Mentioned in National Press
"As part of her research into the area, The Mirror’s technology editor, Olivia Solon, contacted FCRG’s Prof. Todd Hogue for comment on a range of issues, such as social rehabilitation, stigma, and media coverage of sexual crime.
On the issue of stigma and reintegration, Prof. Hogue stated that paedophiles “are alienated, poor and unhappy. It makes it harder to have relationships, harder to re-engage with society and have appropriate and normal relationships”, and thus the risk of reoffending is increased through a lack of social bonds.
Referring to research conducted with PhD student, Craig Harper, in relation to media coverage of sexual crime generally, Prof. Hogue is also quoted as saying that “in seeking to protect the identity of victims who know their perpetrator, papers go gung-ho every time they have a stranger perpetrator.
This gives the public the false idea that the only people they have to worry about is strangers”, and hides the fact that the vast majority (up to 90% in cases of child sexual abuse) involve a perpetrator who is known to the victim."

Stinson Hunter gives Closer a scathing review on The Paedophile Next Door: ‘It’s done more harm than good’
"“I watched The Paedophile Next Door with an open mind, hoping it would challenge my views and opinions.
I honestly thought that it would be a good companion to my film, and they could work alongside each other in the battle for a safer future.
However I fear it did a lot more harm than good, because the film came across completely biased.
They seemed to be trying to rebrand paedophilia and make you feel sorry for paedophiles. And they could have succeeded, had they done a better job with the documentary.
I may not have all the answers or capability to make a better film-I probably could one day, but I feel that Channel 4 dropped the ball with this one.
They did so well with ‘The Paedophile Hunter’ and people got the message, credit mainly to Dan Reed for being such an outstanding filmmaker.
However I felt with ‘The Paedophile Next Door’ it just didn’t connect emotionally.
I didn’t feel anything for ‘virtuous paedophile’ Eddie and I should have done. The Paedophile next door aired last night The Paedophile next door aired last night.
I also didn’t believe Eddie one little bit, in regards to him not acting on his urges.
The fact he has admitted to viewing child abuse images on camera is worrying enough, even if he claims to have never done it again.
The filmmaker should have made me feel some kind of emotion.
The whole thing feels forced, as though Eddie has been pushed into this.
I don’t think we are getting the full story from him or the filmmaker, which is sad because I fully expected to have my opinions and thoughts challenged.
But ‘The Paedophile Next Door’ left me with one question: What was the point of that film?
The filmmaker should have made me feel some kind of emotion- if only for me to question why I was having this emotion."
But for me there was nothing there, I was more moved by the adverts."

‘Coming out’ is a term reserved for sexual minorities, not for pedophiles to use
"Coming out is a term reserved for sexual minorities i.e. lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people, it’s not to be associated with pedophilia and child abusers. It’s a term with positive connotations – sexual minorities are encouraged to come out so that they can live their lives opening, honestly and happily.
However, even in our relatively progressive society, too many still equate homosexuality with pedophilia. Hijacking coming out and altering the meaning of the term will do nothing for the gay rights movement – it will only set it back, both nationally and internationally."

When society mistakes pedophiles for molesters
"Graham is a young man living with a painful secret: he's sexually attracted to children. He's tried to get help but therapists want nothing to do with him. Despite what many might think, he's not a child molester."
"One in 25 men may have pedophilic disorder
What Graham experiences is called pedophilic disorder and is characterized by a persistent desire for sexual contact with a prepubescent child or children. Diagnosis requires that an individual has either acted on their urge or been actively distressed by it.
Not every person with pedophelic disorder automatically becomes an offender.
It's unknown how many people suffer from pedophilic disorder but estimates suggest that one in 25 men may actually meet the criteria."
"Describing child molesters simply as pedophiles, as Britain's notorious Daily Mail tabloid for instance did in August 2014, weakens a distinction that is otherwise crucial in how we judge a person - by their actions, not their desires."

The rise of the lachrymocracy
"What proved particularly tough for me was an unexpected visit by Humphries to a difficult time in my past, when I was young. I am not sure why I was so unprepared. In retrospect, the topic in question was an obvious one to explore.
My mistake was to assume I needed to focus my preparation solely on rational arguments and scientific evidence, and how to present things in a rhetorically persuasive fashion.
This all seemed very remote from ancient details of my personal history. In retrospect it was a silly oversight on my part, but that is with the benefit of hindsight.
OK, time to stop beating about the bush. I was overly emotional.
My paternal lineage is Irish but I was brought up in 1950s England into the culture of the British stiff upper lip. I hate the public displays of emotion that are so ubiquitous in the media these days, which appear to have started in the UK with the mass lachrymosity of the British public in response to the death of Princess Diana (a person most of the “mourners” had never met and knew little about) and which now extend to the winners (and losers) in televised cake-baking contests and such like: no event is too trivial to be the occasion for weeping these days.
As for more serious matters, we are not so much a liberal democracy now as an increasingly illiberal lachrymocracy: it is the weepers and wailers – sometimes with good cause but often not – who call the dirgical tune and imperiously demand we should all sing it."
"But enough. The audio is here, on Dropbox."

Why We Need to Change the "Monster Frame"
"“The Paedophile Next Door,” a documentary that aired on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom, illustrates, in high relief, many of the problems faced by child sexual abuse victims, offenders, citizens and policy makers. Remarkably, this story also documents the problems faced by non-offending pedophiles, that is, people living with – but not acting on – sexual attraction to children.
This documentary helps demonstrate the weakness of the typical “monster” frame that we have for men attracted to children. These men are not all monsters – certainly not the ones who refrain from abusing children. And even when considering those who have abused, viewing them as monsters is not only unhelpful, it is harmful to our own self-interests. As demonstrated in the show, communities that banish known sex offenders simply remove them from known addresses – from which they could be monitored – to unknown addresses from which they might be more likely to continue to harm others. But there is more damage wrought by the monster frame than just this."

Help Wanted: Creating a Better Understanding of Child Sexual Abuse Prevention
"The idea that anyone who is attracted to children will become an offender is hopeless and unhelpful. This view hampers efforts to provide treatment services and/or promote efforts aimed at stopping abuse before a child is harmed. Through our work we hope to change the way this issue is discussed and create a better understanding of interventions that work to prevent child sexual abuse."
